Victory Monument, also known as Patuxai, is a prominent landmark in Vientiane, the capital of Laos. The monument, whose name means "Gate of Triumph" in Lao, is located at the end of Lane Xang Avenue and is often compared to the Arc de Triomphe in Paris due to its similar shape. However, Patuxai features traditional Lao motifs, giving it a unique cultural twist.
Patuxai was constructed between 1957 and 1968 to honor those who fought for Laos' independence from France. The monument is made of concrete, much of which was reportedly donated by the United States and intended for the construction of a new airport. This led to the structure being humorously nicknamed "the vertical runway" by some locals.
The exterior of Patuxai is decorated with images of mythological creatures, gods, and intricate designs reflecting traditional Lao architecture. Inside, the monument consists of several floors with exhibits that showcase the history of the monument, as well as the culture and history of Laos. Visitors can climb to the top of the monument for panoramic views of Vientiane and the surrounding areas.
Patuxai is surrounded by Patuxai Park, a peaceful area with fountains and gardens, making it a popular spot for both tourists and locals to relax and take photographs. The park and monument are especially beautiful at sunset, when the light casts a warm glow over the city.
