Capstan chantey. Scenes from the movie: «Moby Dick» (1956 & 1998) «Капитан Немо» (1975) «Алые паруса» (1961) «Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World» (2003)
When I went through lifeboatman school in SF, the instructor, Tommy Zee, was a one eyed son of a British woman and Chinese man . He had sailed on everything from clipper ships to container ships. Very few people today could stand up to the harsh conditions of the whalers.
The first time I heard this was as a sample of sea shanty in Encyclopedia Encarta…I loved that little CD-ROM of an encyclopedia. Lots of sound clips, I would spend hours crawling through articles, playing quiz games taking place in a medieval-ish hallway…
Классическая китобойная песня! "Моби Дик" вообще лучший из ранних американских романов на мистику, да ещё и прекрасным описанием китобойных реалий. Недаром столько раз экранизирован!
This is my favorite performance of this shanty in large part because of Teresa Morgan's harmony. I'm not aware of any other performance of this shanty that uses harmony in the response (as in call-response). Arguably, it's not authentic for a sea shanty to include a female voice but this is just beautiful to listen to.
+Yes Master! This song ("Santy Anno") is from the 1989 album "Victory Sings At Sea" with Teresa Morgan singing harmonies. Philip Morgan formed this ensemble group "Victory at Sea" in the late 80's. "The Cutters", were formed by Philip and Teresa Morgan in the early ’90s. The Cutters" (which, by 2005, included the Morgan''s two children) released four CDs between 1994 and 2005. www.dancinweb.com/images/oct05.pdf
+Stephen Travis Stephen I stand to be corrected but I don't believe this was written to be, nor was it ever used as, a sea shanty. It's simply a song that came about from disgruntled British sailors who joined the Mexican Navy after the war of 1812 so they could keep fighting the Americans.
+Stephen Travis Hmm...after some consideration, though the meter doesn't seem appropriate for a work shanty, it could have been used as a forecastle/forebitter shanty.
I'm fairly certain that Star Shanty's will come about once we take to the stars, after all, sailing through space is a long experience, you need something to pass the time, though don't quote me I'm not an expert.
@@codyyoung5946 I hope so.....actually, I don't know if you'll find this interesting but I've been making something along the lines of 'star shanties' for a story I've been working on for a year or two now. Basically a lot of sea shanties were 'reverse engineered' to fit the changing times. So for example the song, 'Rolling down to Old Maui' is, 'We'll find our own Maui' about spacefarers finding their own tropical place to call home and has some of the elements of the original song within it and called 'New world shanties' while those that cannot be changed with the times for whatever reasons are called 'Old World shanties' and those that were meant to change with the times like, 'The last shanty' are called 'Cross world shanties.'
@@rainofstars00 Uh.....no and yes, back in 2019, I got sick, almost allowed it to become blood poisoning, in 2020......then in 2021, multiple car break downs, got sick again, another car break down, so I have not been in the mood to make either video or story, and I'm only 'now' getting back into the swing of things. I've decided to review and rewrite a lot of it, as the writings show how my physical health was affecting me and then followed by my mental during lockdown when I was stuck at home for six months, I rent a room in the middle of the woods.....complete isolation sounds cool, nature all to ones self, away from cities, just you and your thoughts.....until you actually live it. Yeah, and also, in the middle of the woods, internet connection is sort of bad on many days, so I often cut off from the world, it.....shows in my writings.....finally read Adam Smiths 'The Wealth of nations' though, I found it fascinating how much of what he said in the 1700's, is still relevant. He even predicted that in 200 to 250 years from him time, more sources of gold would be found, and he was right....only, not on 'Earth' which kind of inspired me to rewrite a lot of things, or even update with more details in other parts, so, I've decided to review, rewrite, and add more back lore going back centuries from the main story so to set up not just the universe, but also a history of Humanity and several other spacefaring species.
these do already exist, and as far as i'm aware they're generally known as 'filk'; some of them are more towards the folk side in terms of story-telling, but i think they fit it regardless otherwise i hope you're well man, let us all know how it goes
This song is attributed to British sailors who had joined Santa Anna's Navy. They were still a tad miffed about the War of 1812 and wanted to continue the fight against the United States.
This song reminds me of Rodriguez from Shogun... I can see him at the helm, belting out this song while he chases down the Engles' ship across the seas of Japan.
In 1990 during a port visit in San Francisco, I discover this group thanks to a Tape IBought a the maritime museum. Till This time I don't only listen to those songs butalso sing them very often because I was a sailor and love sailor's songs. I am frenchfrom Britany , till my child Hood I always sang sailors song but when heard the groupVictory Sings at Sea, it was as I had never listen to sailors songs. The female voicesdo give a so beautiful sound that it seems its not realand comes from heaven....But its a pity for me I've listen so often my tape that now the sound is very bad.I expect I will find a CD.

Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, "Santi Anno" fought against U.S. invasion to Mexico. "Santi Anno" gained the day in the battle of Molino del Rey (King's Mill). This battle was won by mexican army to Zachary Taylor, and it was about 11 or 12 years after the Texas rebelion in which Mexico lost that territory. In that war many british and irish soldiers who had migrated to U.S.A. deserted american army and passed to mexican side because they knew it was an unfair war. Probably they invented this song.
"Moby Dick" from Herman Melville's classic novel published 18 Oct. 1851 & the resulting 1956 film. Do see [here on YT] the Pequod setting out on her 3/4 year whaling voyage, the gummy & be-whiskered wives & mothers, the fabulous chanteys & HAVE Tissues handy unless you're VERY unsentimental. Wonderful film.

don't be sorry for the whales back then , because men often died in the process. It was a nobel fight for survival . Nowadays we hunt them with machines for nothing...
No. It's a fair fight when two opponents challenge each other. The whales didn't challenge anybody, they didn't do any human any harm, it was the humans that decided to hunt the whales. I don't feel sorry for captain Ahab, I feel sorry for the whale that is bleeding and has to keep dragging the corpse of this sorry human being with him through the oceans.
Aaron Schuehly Don't know about that, both are sea songs but they don't have either the same melody nor the same meaning. On top of that, this one is about a place and the french one is about a ship called santiano. Maybe the ship is based on this song wich in turn is the base for the french song.
I tought you meant the song "Santiano" by Hugues Aufray, because this is actually one of the more famous french songs (/watch?v=_sWdxvNj-n0), but if you say that the song you mean doesn't have the same melody it couldn't be this one... Who sang the song you mean?
Hughes Aufray didn't write the melody to his version but basically lifted it and the Santiano/Santyana name and wrote different lyrics to the rest. It's not originally a French song at all, but derived from the much older sea song in English. That said, I do also like the Hugues Aufray version.
Surprise! I m not sure about Moby Dick movie but I defintely spotted here some scenes from Soviet movie "Captain Nemo" (miniseries of early 1980s with excellent Ukrainian actor Vladimir Talashko playing Ned Land). The song is gorgeous :) And it was nice to see some Hello from the childhood ;)
@bmbenblog The whole point of a sailor song (shanty) is to keep the crew working in rhythm. It doesn't really matter what the lyrics are saying. Just sit back and enjoy the song, mate.
Personally I dont care for their problems, if their people dont make the change thats their fault. But, the world always swings around. Someday a leader will rise amongst them and raise legendary skills such as the man this song is about. humanity is funny like that. Heros rise from dark times, and hard times breed harder men.
Texas Ranger Fillip Taxas is Texas. He defeated socialist revolts in Mexico and the French military in open battle. His biggest issue was weak fellow generals
