Jeeeez, thank you for this video, Tiffany. You put words to a lot of feelings I’ve had since becoming a full time RU-vidr. The insecurity, the anticipation of criticism, the indecisiveness when it comes to sharing what and how much. I hate implying that this job is hard because we clearly have a lot of privilege to be able to do it. But it still begins to weigh on you. When I started RU-vid in 2020, I had long since been working on my self esteem. And I thought I was in a good place. Since gaining an audience, that self esteem has quickly been broken. I don’t think we’re made to have hundreds of people weigh in on our personhood-not even just our opinions, but us as people. It’s hard not to internalize that. I tend to hear the voice of negative commenters in my head whenever I’m doing ANYTHING. From scripting to just…living. 😮‍💨

This will undoubtedly be a confusing video for some, but holy shit this is so incredibly real to me, and I’m sure anyone who has dipped into the creator space. Genuinely in the exact place - I am terrified to read comments & DMs. I stopped posting on IG because it stressed me. Someone recognized my kids while they were out with a family member without me and messaged me about it (just to say hi, no mal-intent) and it completely freaked me out. This is such a weird space. And I did not intend to word vomit here. 😂 now I’m worried about the comments here lol

I get that anxiety. I had someone I don't know harassing me, using my children's names, which is not something one can find with just a Google search btw, and that was the end of social media and reading comments for me! I can only imagine how dialed up that becomes when you have a large audience! I love your channel, it helped me so much when I was pregnant in 2020! ❤️
@amandamarklandyoga
@amandamarklandyoga Год назад
Yikes. It upsets me how some people feel entitled to your privacy just because they’ve built a parasocial relationship with you. I no longer post my child anywhere. That’s partially because he’s his own person and will eventually want to have control over his online presence, but also because I do not want weirdos online to figure out who he is. There are terrifying people out there who will try and hurt you just because they disagree with you…by doxxing you or crossing a boundary. I feel terrible for anyone with a monstrous following having to negotiate private life and family with public influence. Better to be safe than sorry and preserve your mental health. Much love to you both. ❤

I resonate with so many of your points - especially starting to add disclaimers in your real life to friends who actually know you and interpret you in good faith. Also so interesting about you saying you sometimes watch other people's videos and think 'they've done it better, need I do it?' because I've totally felt like that about YOUR channel before - we're so bad at seeing what unique function our stuff serves, I've decided I'm not a reliable narrator when it comes to assessing whether my work 'needs' to exist or not. I personally watch yours BECAUSE they don't have a fixed, angry conclusion and they cover lighter topics with unexpected depth. Also I don't think you should rule out experimenting with voice overs - I know the b-roll to gather is a pain, but I'd definitely still watch if it was a voice over, or even if you just appeared at the beginning. Anyway, this is the longest comment I've left on a video in MONTHS so I will go, but suffice to say, thank you for the videos, I watch every single one and I think you're great.

I just needed to say that your section on boundaries and privacy spoke to me a lot and made me feel relieved to see thoughts that I always felt were "overthinking" or "too paranoid" are... not. I had barely 3k subscribers in a small community of youtube and I had to stop making videos because I was a wreck. I wasn't even getting criticism, but the way that community would twist words in the name of social justice made me feel queasy. I went through a crisis just from watching people tear each other apart. It's been over a year since I left that space and I'm still so paranoid. even posting a story is terrifying, like you said. there's no room to make a mistake. the consequences can be... a lot. horrible. far too much. I've closed myself off from the world. it's isolating and lonely and a really sad place to be in. with the size of the audience you have, I can only imagine how much more magnified you feel. I just wanted to tell you thank you for making this video, for even us small creators (or ex-creators?) can appreciate it, and that I hope you're taking care of yourself. I know that can be a bit of an empty phrase since we see it on social media all the time but I really hope you're doing well. well done on the video!

I fully give you permission to stop overthinking your videos because you are one of the few good video essayists on YT, to the point where I kind of use you as a benchmark to size up other video essayists/commentary RU-vidrs. I think you do a good job of covering all (or almost all) of the perspectives and nuances of topics while still injecting your personality into the commentary so it's not boring. You are also one of the few White RU-vidrs who do a good job of bringing up important topics on race when it is relevant to the topic without centering yourself and also recommending BIPOC RU-vidrs. Very few strike that balance.

I absolutely love that your takes are always nuanced. I'd rather a video be longer and someone think about the many other perspectives over snap judgements and hot takes any day. Only half way through but I can also relate to having thought processes changed due to predicting criticism. Mine comes from being in a toxic relationship. I like people being direct with me and very open to constructive criticism for my art for example. But I had a relationship where he would hold on to things, expect me to correct my behaviour and take things I've said out of context. I didn't understand at the time that people could get you to open up to actually use it against you in the future. So, I began to fear being misunderstood even around friends like you said. Fortunately I've gotten to a point where my critical thinking is healthy and can notice the difference between wanting to be my authentic self/over explaining. When I get intrusive thoughts I remind myself that there is usually very little threat to someone misunderstanding you, only in toxic situations. Sometimes when it's bad, I'll watch your videos not even for the subject, but just to hear someone who takes the time to think. It's calming.

I think literally every full time RU-vidr feels this - the part about 10/10 on the view count is so accurate and I totally feel you about the privacy paranoia. I’m travelling and I won’t post my pics of near my apartment until I’ve left - which is probably too much but you want to be safe - really good video as usual! nicely compliments the one you made about the life and death of RU-vid channels too

Tiffany, I grew up watching your videos and going through the same: becoming vegan, going on Erasmus, summer camps and uni, figuring out debt, political views… I may be biased because we have similar paths, but girl, you are amazing. Please. I wish you could swim in a river of validation just for the love. Internet Analysis is brilliant. It’s yours, and it brings new stuff to the table. I love your wittiness, quirkiness and even the self-deprecating humor because it is so relatable. Please don’t settle for this format or career if it doesn’t bring you joy anymore or at some point. You are a gem and should be living your best creative life as everyone should :) To me you’re not flopping at all, and if you decide to stay, I’ll be here to watch your videos! I appreciate your nuance and the depolarised view (even if you have an opinion about the topic) but to me it’s fine to loosen up the discourse, you have built enough trust - your audience knows you’re never coming from an intentional harmful or dismissive attitude. I really enjoyed spending the last 30 minutes with you in the open book old school format. Thank you for sharing and for the all the work that go into these videos. Sending you love!

To anyone reading, these feelings also apply to anyone who works with an audience. I'm an artist, so the focus of the criticism is more based on my art performance, but it still rings true. All the negative comments I've recieved in my life, and all the criticism other artists around me recieved, I internalize it and think about them anytime I post or draw. It's exhausting but rewarding. I'm glad someone is putting it into words, even if it's probably been done before, it still reaches new people.

As someone who has a video essay channel that is still small, but starting to gather a kinda frightening amount of attention, it's really nice to hear honestly from someone who's been on the other side of that for a long time. Hearing all this is genuinely so helpful. And really, really you should give yourself more credit! You are in my opinion an essential voice in this sphere, and your ability to relay complex topics in an accessible and friendly way without sacrificing nuance represents a ton of skill. Not many people can do that, even the video essayists who may be more experimental in format or employ higher-intensity editing. I believe in you :)

As an artist who has been posting on IG since 2019 and building my brand to 85k followers, ive experienced the exact same burnout you're speaking of. The quiet quitting, shrinking away from dms, being afraid to open your inbox, feeling disconnected from the community you've built and feeling like no one cares. It really gets to your peace of mind. And the sad part is that you don't realize it's happening until youre there in the void, scrolling your archives wondering, "who is this old me that used to post so much interesting confident content?". Ugh! Super relatable topic Tiff and I loved youre little cuts with your intrusive thoughts in this video. Literally laughing out loud and saying "yeah" to a lot of what you were saying. XD

I loved this cathartic video! And I think this is because I understand you - not as a youtuber, but as a person who consumes and has obsessively used social media in the past. I ended up creating an online image myself too. I posted a lot on Instagram for example, shared every view I had on every topic I had come across to, and it became uncontrolable for me to be on the Internet!! Now I'm also going on through a changing time of my life. I'm glad you shared all your RU-vid creation process and I support you in this "new era" (should I call it this way?). Very thoughtful essay Tiffany ! I've been following your for years now, and I know it's easy to say, but don't put so much pressure on your content. 17:43 into the video, I'm very tired of my day and I usually finish long videos in two times. I find this very interesting and enlightening. This essay is personal enough so that we can identify to your struggles and learn from your experiences. I think it's more and more important to think about how the creator on the other side of the screen may feel. We may be nice and thankful, we're still consuming your work as if it was a open buffet, without seeing all the work behind. It's a hard job; I know that most youtuber have felt imposter syndrome at least once, but this job is so demanding on so many levels. And I haven't watched the "boundaries" part yet but that too, you're comprising with your private life and image. That is a big sacrifice to make, and we should pay more respect to that. I like the new haircut, you're always very pretty and it suits you just as well. And for the lighting, and angle, etc... I get you, I feel the same. But I don't consider myself to be photogenic and always abandon on looking "ok" enough for the camera. I think you're photogenic; I don't get tired of your voice nor of your face. And little mistakes or things out of place in the frame would not be taken into consideration when deciding whether the video was great or not. Ok, I'm not as concise as I'd like. But you're great. I meant to day it before I go to sleep and watch the rest tomorrow.

Oh PLEASE finish the video about influencers over sharing. I’m sure that could be a whole series. But I do find it interesting that some people let it all hang out. As for this video, the algorithm is feeding me your videos again. I saw the fall one last time and commented. Now I’m seeing this! I haven’t seen your videos for over a year. The most compelling part of this video for me was when you dove into how your habits on the internet have changed. Have you ever thought that there is simply more content and more people creating? People only have so much time in a day. As much as I’d love to consume more content, I find myself having to choose. I have never seen or heard of you or this channel, and then was shocked to see 170,000+ subscribers, and 100,000+ views on this video alone in just four days. THATS HUGE.
