Video from the Past [12] - James "Jimmy" Doolittle
James Harold "Jimmy" Doolittle was an American aviation pioneer. He served as a commissioned officer in the United States Army Air Forces during the Second World War and was awarded the Medal of Honor for his valor and leadership as commander of the Doolittle Raid while a Lieutenant Colonel.
Directly promoted to brigadier general the day after the raid, Doolittle was briefly assigned to the Eighth Air Force in Europe that July, before being posted to the Twelfth Air Force in North Africa. Promoted again in November (to major general), Doolittle was given command of the Northwest African Strategic Air Forces in March 1943, which consisted of both American and British units. A rising star in the US Army Air Force's high command, Doolittle briefly led the Fifteenth Air Force, before taking over the Eighth Air Force in England.
Assuming command of the Eighth, with the rank of lieutenant general, in January 1944, Doolittle oversaw its operations against the Luftwaffe in northern Europe. Among the notable changes he made was allowing escorting fighters to leave their bomber formations to attack German airfields. This aided in preventing German fighters from launching as well as assisted in allowing the Allies to gain air superiority. Doolittle led the Eighth until September 1945, and was in the process of planning for its redeployment to the Pacific Theater of Operations when the war ended.
A final honor was bestowed upon Doolittle on April 4, 1985, when he was promoted to general on the retired list by President Ronald Reagan.

I was fortunate to see Gen. Doolittle in 1984. He was in Las Vegas for an anniversary of the Air Force Association. I didn’t meet him, sadly. But...I have met about 30 of the Raiders and windows. I was fortunate to get many signatures on artwork related to the raid and books of the raid, including Jimmy’s autobiography. These men we cut from a different cloth. The don’t make ‘em like this anymore!

What a wonderful documentary! America has no shortage of amazingly brave & courageous soldiers, but, unfortunately, we are overloaded with far too many self-centered politicians who value agenda (political and/or personal) over that which is best for our country. Sadly, I fear that if (when) we face WW3, our great country will perish because we are so horribly divided by partisan self interest that we will be unable to come together as a nation and support our military. For the past few generations, America has enjoyed such unparalleled success and affluence that we now suffer from destructive levels of self inflicted internal conflict. Our current trajectory closely mirrors that of the Roman empire. We lack pride in American strength and exceptionalism, we question the traditional values which made America great, we fail to recognize the central role that a dominant America plays in world peace and prosperity and we ignorantly expect that the rest of the world to leave us alone as we weaken our nation. America is the strongest force for good and the most peaceful and humane nation in the history of the world & given the chance (as we currently are providing) our rivals are rapidly taking over and destroying America, which is tragically sad and frightening for the next generation of Americans.

As I read your comment I began wondering if I was the person who wrote it. I agree wholeheartedly with everything you said and I'm very frustrated with where we are as a country. I remember how patriotic the feeling was after 9/11 among even the media and Hollywood. Hard to imagine that now.

Just one small point amongst many small points in a great story: one of the aircraft (shown at 9:44) is a 4-engined B-24.

He was correct in getting the student pilot back in the air right away, given time to reflect, fear may have caused the trainee to never get up again. I used that when teaching people to ride horses. Best example, 2 of my grandkids. My oldest granddaughter fail off my big boy Cody, a quarter horse I told her to get back in the saddle, which she did ( age 8) She went on to compete in open class events , by age 10 had a wall full of blue 1st place ribbons , belt buckles and a saddle. Her older brother ( 2 years older) got bucked off and refused to get back on. Said he would after he caught his breath, he never did.

He also was involved in developing super high octane fuels which served as free will in World War II at one time and it was $30 a gallon or something and they and they laughed at him but ultimately that's what really defeated the Germans we always had that advantage of lighter engines running higher compressions in the Germans could I from what I understand

It was beautiful, just beautiful, those kind of men will never exist in the world again, these were men with honor and guts men that love America, they were not like us. Today men are cowards we hide behind others pretend to love our country but not willing to sacrifice anything, take the capitol attack for example, real Americans would never do something like that, the world is filled with anarchists and lawbreakers who claims to be patriotic.
