Video from the Past [37] - Robin Olds
DISCLAIMER: This interview was taken from the "Timeless Voices" series available on the EAA (Experimental Aircraft Association).
Robin Olds was an American fighter pilot and general officer in the U.S. Air Force. He was a "triple ace", with a combined total of 16 victories in World War II and the Vietnam War. He retired in 1973 as a brigadier general.
The son of regular Army Maj. Gen. Robert Olds, educated at West Point, and the product of an upbringing in the early years of the U.S. Army Air Corps, Olds epitomized the youthful World War II fighter pilot. He remained in the service as it became the United States Air Force, despite often being at odds with its leadership, and was one of its pioneer jet pilots. Rising to the command of two fighter wings, Olds is regarded among aviation historians, and his peers, as the best wing commander of the Vietnam War, for both his air-fighting skills, and his reputation as a combat leader.
Robin Olds flew the P-38 Lightning and the P-51 Mustang, but the highlight of his career was the Vietnam War. He planned a mission designed to draw the North Vietnamese Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-21s into an aerial trap, and the now famous "Operation Bolo" resulted. The mission was planned in response to North Vietnamese tactics during the Operation Rolling Thunder aerial-bombardment campaign wherein MiGs were used to attack heavily loaded fighter-bombers while circumventing their fighter escorts. The mission featured fighter planes following the typical flight paths of bombers in order to lure enemy aircraft into attacking. Bolo pitted the F-4 Phantom II multirole fighter against its rival, the Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-21 interceptor, and was considered to be one of the most successful combat ruses of all time, eventually prompting VPAF pilots and strategists, as well as Soviet tacticians, to re-evaluate the tactics and deployment of the MiG-21.
Olds was promoted to brigadier general after returning from Vietnam but did not hold another major command. The remainder of his career was spent in non-operational positions, as Commandant of Cadets at the United States Air Force Academy and as an official in the Air Force Inspector General's Office. His inability to rise higher as a general officer is attributed to both his maverick views and his penchant for drinking.
Olds had a highly publicized career and life, including marriage to Hollywood actress Ella Raines. As a young man he was also recognized for his athletic prowess in both high school and college, being named an All American for his play as a lineman in American football. Olds expressed his philosophy regarding fighter pilots in the quote: "There are pilots and there are pilots; with the good ones, it is inborn. You can't teach it. If you are a fighter pilot, you have to be willing to take risks."

Nigel Hodgetts Operation Bolo is proof that Olds was not only a great pilot, but a true leader and an outstanding tactician. He came to 'nam at a time where the morale of US pilots (especially Thunderchief crews) was at an all-time low. He forced the USAF to change its tactics and most of the concepts he helped to enforce in pilots' heads are still in use today. He proved that dogfighting was not only an art, but it was and always will be relevant. It always makes me chuckle when I watch interviews where some historians explain how dogfighting was thought (by high ranking USAF staff) to be obsolete at the beginning of the Vietnam war and how the use of missiles was supposed to end the need for brains and guts. Robin Olds proved them all wrong. What a man.

+Chuck Owl Olds was a fighter jock's fighter jock with outstanding stick n' rudder skills, aggressiveness, leadership,and disdain for "by the book" regs when they interfered with the job at hand. His acid comments about the Pentagon mentality of the day require no elaboration.

I think it shows that he was able to recognize the abilities of the men serving underneath him and his own limitations. Bolo was planned by pilots junior to Olds but experienced in theater and fighting in the F-4. Other commanders might not have been so comfy letting "junior" members plan such a high profile operation.

Met him and interviewed Gen Olds in '92 at Oshkosh. I think this was the interview I conducted with him for a TSN (The Sports net) called the Sky's the Limit. He was an amazing person and a great interview. A rare pilot, who was not only exceptional, but who was able to describe his exploits so well. Our show foxused on the reunion of Gen Olds with Gen Chuck Yeager, whom I also had the pleasure to meet. The two men were meeting for the first time in decades, and enjoying their first flight in Old's WWII P-51. Wha great experience for me.

An interesting factoid: after Olds had finished his tour of leadership with 'The Wolfpack', instead of sending him to a position training fighter pilots for combat, he was sent to the Airforce academy training kids who were nowhere near getting ready for combat flying. Olds apparently never had a problem speaking his mind, and that did NOT endear him with the Brass so he got 'exiled'. Too bad they kept him out of Korea too. Imagine if he shot down aircraft in all three wars.

I like how he took charge of his future by ignoring nitpicking protocol and getting the results that would propel him into the roll of a leader. The book Robin Olds, "Fighter Pilot" is excellent. It's one of the best military autobiographies I've ever read. The other thing I'd like to add -- his F-4C (Scat XXVII, the last fighter he flew in combat) was preserved. It's in the AF Museum. One thing they neglected to do was follow his instruction to leave the plane "conserved" with all the dings and worn paint. (Basically the way it looked during the Vietnam War.) The anal-retentive curators went ahead and gave the airframe a new coat of paint!
@DD-sw1dd
@DD-sw1dd 8 лет назад
That sucks that they repainted it. Really ruins the whole experience of viewing it IMO. Maybe preservation had something to do with their decision. But who knows. Seems like they could apply something else besides paint if that was the case.

How the hell did they lift Robin Olds up on their shoulders? His testicles alone weigh 400 pounds.

Would have loved to be there with Robin at the Wolf Pack, 8th TFW in Udon Thani (once called Udorn RTAFB) flying in those F4 Phantoms. I live in Udon Thani right now. Some of the old aircraft revetments and the old control tower are still there at the international airport! Such a long runway, extended I am told to accommodate B52's. Robin was loved by all who served under him. Rather than going up the chain of command, Robin organised himself to keep flying with his men. He was not interested in being shipped back home away from the action, or additional stars on the lapels. He wanted to stay with his men at the pointy end and fly on tactical missions. That is what he excelled at, and what he truly loved. By the way....Robin did shoot down five Mig's.....but even in this video he keeps that under wraps! The fifth Mig he recorded as a maybe, but his crew later reported that they had seen it go down, and I believe there were others too that he 'gave away' to other flyers. Good on you Robin, you completed your tour. This just goes to show that Robin was not out for glory, he just wanted to be allowed to do what he did best. What a great guy. I feel from this video the underlying upset Robin had at being shipped back after only one year at Udorn RTAFB, as he must have felt he could have contributed more, and in addition his reservations about how the air war was being conducted at the top by people who did not have a darn clue. He abhorred BS, and always told it straight. That upset some people, including the president, but Robin was right. It was a war, and in a war it is all out, not pussyfooting around like fools. If the Vietnamese ports had been mined then a great many US service men could have been saved from the munitions being brought in by ship. Robin is the model of a real commander. His staff loved and respected him. He was there for and with his staff all the way, and took care for them not just as assets to pass on their knowledge, but as people. This is the kinda commander all flyers would give their right arm to serve under. RIP Robin. Thank you for your service, the care you took in everything you did for your staff, for being a real commander, and having the guts to always tell it straight. The best. Never to be forgotten.

Udon Thani (Udorn) was one base, Ubon Airfield was a civilian airport in Ubon Ratchathani that was used jointly by the RTAF and our USAF. The one runway (05-23) was 9000x125 feet (at the time) and was unsuitable for B-52 aircraft.

@@schoolssection Udon Thani (Udorn Airbase) was the home of the 8th TFW (Wolf Pack), the base of operations for Air America, a base for Spectre and Spooky gunships, and a base for the loading of agent orange spraying aircraft. I have had that confirmed by a green beret who passed through the airbase. Down town in Udon Thani were The Champagne Rooms, and this is where the Air America guys hung out. I am currently trying to find their original location. There was The Bamboo Bar too, and some seventy five go go bars around town. Having talked to a Thai lady who worked at the Udorn Airbase during the Vietnam War, I was informed by her that the runway had been extended to get B52's in. But it was somewhat wasted as B52's never came to Udorn. In fact when you fly in and out today you notice that long runway. The old control tower and some of the revetments are still there to this very day, but I believe unused. Also one F4 crew with hydraulic problems ejected over the Udorn base, and the aircraft came down on the forces radio and television station in the base, and a number of staff were killed. Additionally the base was mortared too from over the border in Laos. The A2 road that comes up to Udon was built by The Army Corp of Constructors. That was needed to ferry jet fuel to Udorn Airbase. I think you are right concerning the distinction between Udorn and Ubon. Sorry, my mistake. I have corrected that. It is a fascinating history that I will continue to pursue. I think by the specific nature of your response that you must have been at Udorn or Ubon. Am I correct? Thank you for your response. It is appreciated.

This is about Robin Olds, not how great the Luftwaffe wasn't. Find a different video to brag about the Nazi.
