Video from the Past [39] - CF-105 Avro Arrow Documentary
The Avro Canada CF-105 Arrow was a delta-winged interceptor aircraft, armed with AIM-4 Falcon and AIM-7 Sparrow missiles, designed and built by Avro Canada as the culmination of a design study that began in 1953. The Arrow is considered to have been an advanced technical and aerodynamic achievement for the Canadian aviation industry. The CF-105 (Mark 2) held the promise of near-Mach 2 speeds at altitudes of 50,000 feet (15,000 m) and was intended to serve as the Royal Canadian Air Force's primary interceptor in the 1960s and beyond.
Not long after the 1958 start of its flight test program, the development of the Arrow (including its Orenda Iroquois jet engines) was abruptly halted before the project review had taken place, sparking a long and bitter political debate. The controversy engendered by the cancellation and subsequent destruction of the aircraft in production remains a topic for debate among historians, political observers and industry pundits. "This action effectively put Avro out of business and its highly skilled engineering and production personnel scattered...."

19:52 - Such BS as to be staggering beyond belief. Just the export sales of the aircraft, to overseas markets, would have MORE than covered the expense. 43:19 and 46:40 - My point exactly. 43:50 - BS! You don't just destroy brand new, multi-million dollar aircraft. They could have been used as test beds for new engines, weapons systems, canopies, ejection seats, et cetera. They could have even been used as chase planes for other programs. 46:45 - MORE BS! The 1953-54 Canadian Defense (Defence) budget was $1.8 BILLION, so it would have been around $2 billion in 1959. How would having even $100 million for the Arrow program, a mere FIVE PERCENT of the budget, take ALL the money from the Army and Navy, leaving them "totally bereft?" He is also totally misusing the word bereft here, btw. The one thing this program does not say is that the Arrow program was RIFE with Soviet spies. It was said the Russians were getting the information from their spies as fast as it was available to the Avro engineers. If you take an Arrow, downsize it a bit, put on those mach 3 air intakes they discussed in the program, you have a MiG-25. The only significant difference is that the wing is not a full delta and there are elevators in the back, which would have probably also been changed with the Arrow, to add stability at the higher mach number. A full delta wing with "elevons" (combination elevators and ailerons) would likely be difficult to control around mach 3. The twin vertical stabilizers of the MiG-25 are likely merely a redundancy feature and were possibly added by the Soviets to hide evidence of the Foxbat's Canadian heritage.

The Russians were infiltrating the program like everything else. Thats the real reason why it was scrapped. We were building it for them in the end. Such a shame. They stole everything from the west. It was such a sick machine, wish wed bring it back 2.0.

They're going to bring her back someday. The Arrow is on the list of airplanes that need to come back.

Looking at this aircraft I see similarities with other later aircraft , nose/cockpit/engine air intakes - Jaguar - beinging one of them , looks wise it looked the part , speed wise - mach 1.9 - as a fighter/intercepter it had that covered - fastest aircraft in the air at that time - probably - years ahead of the Lightning . As for it demise , as with the British TSR2 , a crippling blow to Canadian Avation Industry , from which it never recovered . Looked at , at that time by the Canadian Government a Hugh financial drain , with hindsight - something Politicians do not process - possible could have been Canada's greatest input to Milartry Aviation , the fact the British wanted it to evaluate/maybe improve - we do sometimes improve things - speaks volumes for it potential . A sad fact the Canadian Government destroyed the the Canadian Avation Industry , much as the British Government did to the British Avation Industry (TSR2)
