They are just plastic tubes. Play them however you would like :) Hitting them in a big group is great but it’s not the only possibility for them!

There's not only one way that they are "supposed" to be played. Lots of instruments, especially percussion, can be played a variety of ways. Setting up boomwhackers like that and playing them kind of like a mallet instrument is a very common thing to do
