The head of the Chicago Transit Authority drivers’ union said the attack was targeted, and is worried about safety for drivers going into the summer. CBS 2's Jermont Terry reports.

A bus driver in Charlotte, NC got fired for doing just that to defend himself. Because had he NOT carried, he would've been shot by a passenger in an instant.

I also carry as a bus driver up here in Chicago and I'm also licensed to carry. I also a third degree black belt in Kyokushin karate and shito-ryu as a young Gen Z bus driver in the name. It's been a year for me in the bus driving industry and got other jobs in lined just in case if I get fired because that's disappointed that our company doesn't care about bus drivers at all and we're the ones keeping these buses rolling. One of my coworker is carrying also and I don't blame him.

Which is why I hated taking the dirty Red Line to 95th Red Line just to go home when I was living in the Roseland neighborhood. I would take the Metra back home which is safer.

And I wouldn't trust complete strangers to "do the right thing" as you might think it, either. They might not be as "telepathic" as to my intentions just because they look as though they may respond in a certain way to the assault, or vice versa. That's *precisely* when to look out for number 1, not "be a hero". Somebody on a bus in the UK was murdered by a person who'd at one time been living with an associate of mine after causing a nuisance to fellow passengers. He wasn't the tiniest bit sorry for what he did - that I can be certain of.

I hope bus drivers are at least empowered to call CPD much earlier than this driver did. As soon as the woman started threatening him, the bus driver should be allowed to call police to get her removed and charged with harassment. I hope the driver is able to recover quickly and that the police do their jobs and catch the male offender. I thought CTA already has its own security officers.

I remember something similar happening almost 40 years ago though the guy didn’t go as far as this guy did. He was wandering around the Cicero ave bus harassing other passengers until the driver stopped & called police. Several of us got off & also called 911 from pay phones (obviously this was before cell phones). Police never came, but a fire engine did? Back then the people they were hiring for dispatch weren’t the brightest. Only a few years later I called 911 in the middle of the night for gunshots right outside my ground floor apartment near Loyola University. Dispatcher never sent anyone AND told me “Ma’am. You’re inside. What are you worried about?” Always have been useless.

Ride the bus route and get a tally going the best you can of paying vs non paying customers. The bus is free. Pay if you want in NYC.

Don't count on it. Being a bus driver is a huge responsibility and requires constant attention. That's why drivers are required to have a CDL License with Passenger Endorsements. AI can't even come close.

I don't understand why the CTA bus is not like a gas station with bullet proof glass so they can't get to you. The plastic shield is only halfway covering you it's ridiculous! The bus cost the city almost 500k each look it up no reason not to have fully protected drivers. The train operators are locked inside so people can't get to them.

In Detroit our bus system have transit police officers riding behind them sometimes but I normally see them in the Midtown and Downtown area. I think Chicago need to have a transit police to make it safer.

As a driver like myself I can't really blame the bus operator for taking matters into his own hands just to go home in one piece because in Los Angeles CA, Metro Operators go through the issues as Chicago, IL. There are tax paying law abiding people in these neighborhoods that need transportation to work, school and hospitals. They should not be denied services because of a few fools. This would be a good use of the National Guard, at least through the summer.

No just have their own security like the metra. Or make it impossible for a rider to psychically assault the bus driver. On trains, you can’t access the driver. Make the same adjustment, spend a little money and hold police accountable for poor response times.

@@gladiator1342 Well, police accountability just isn't gonna happen, certainly not in Chicago or most big cities. Passengers also need a sense of security, so if Metra security can do that, it would be great, otherwise let the National Guard do it.

I hope those drivers are getting combat pay. I thought this was the one I saw on the news last night where the bus driver was attacked while the bus was literally moving. In some states even if you are being attacked and get out of your seat you are immediately terminated. Their philosophy is that you can put the passengers in danger.

Sounds like the police dropped the ball. They only arrived after citizens started to call what happened to the bus drivers call if they were immediately dispatched he might’ve been OK. Maybe it’s time they do deploy their own police officers..

In New York it’s a felony charge to touch MTA employee. I don’t know if the bus drivers in that area have the same protection, but it seems to work here.

Friends, this is happening here in Toronto as well. Except a bus ride here is a lot more expensive than in Chicago. Not to mention that our economy is in the tank and we have more homeless people here than misquotes. Did I mention that groceries have doubled in price, and ya'all wonder why some guy is trying to skimp on the bus ride? LOL.
