@151Gattlin You don't train for stupid, you are or you are not. I don't care whether they are allowed by law or not. It's a dumb practice for everyone.
As a CDL driver there is no reason too drive and be distracted from your job this person has learned a hard lesson the use of a phone should not interfer with his or her's responsibility while driving
I'm going to school right now to be a truck driver and a lot of what we're learning is about not being distracted on the road because it's easy to get distracted driving those big trucks... I'm going to be as Safe as I can....🙏🏾✌🏿
They have to teach new drivers common sense and human decency??!! I'd like to say what's wrong with the youth but I see just as many old people on their phones while driving and I wonder how they've lived as long as they have by being that STUPID!
you'll hear a lot of truckers bad mouthing inward facing cameras, i think they are necessary to correct continuing bad habits that truckers have or new bad habits picked up.
Same thing happened to me. I was driving from AZ to CA with my kids in the car and I was run off the road by a truck driver. I was honking my horn, but he never heard me. I was in the slow lane and he just kept moving over into my lane untill I ended up in the dirt. We all could see him talking on the phone as he's getting closer to my car. I managed to get back on the highway, behind him, only to see that he was still on his cell phone, he never saw us. 🤬 Some of these truck drivers are driving way over the speed limit.
TIP: Don’t honk your horn, just use evasive action to avoid getting hit. Truck drivers would never hear your horn over the roar of our diesel engines. Good luck.
If you get caught using your phone while driving, you lose your license for a minimum of one year and ninety days in jail, how about that for a new law
I drive a semi for a living, and that would be around 90% of the people on the road I can see on their phones when I look down into their cars as they haul ass past me.
I live in Ontario Canada. It's a $2500 fine and a distracted driving charge if you get caught texting or talking on your phone. Everyone we know pulls over if they have to use there phones now.
write the right information = How much is the fine for texting and driving in Ontario? The minimum fine for texting and driving in Ontario is $490. The maximum fine is $3000. The texting and driving laws in Ontario fall under the distracted driving laws in the province. You are subject to the same penalties for distracted driving if you are caught texting while driving.Feb 24, 2020
@@joet7136 I approached a lady one time at a R&R crossing while we were waiting for a train whom I had been following. She was driving down the middle of the street. She had been texting and was still texting. I told her that that was illegal and she looked at me with the deer in the headlights look. Then she said that she wasn't hurting anyone and I told her she was just a murderer waiting for the right moment.
@John Kyle holding phone to head while having your eyes to the road is undoubtedly worse than having your eyes to the road while talking to someone in the backseat. 1 hand is occupied with something unrelated to safe handling of the vehicle.
Clever video. They show a small clip of dashcam; knowing we’re hoping to see the crash, then they go back to the talking heads. Later they drop that carrot again. In the end we watched the whole thing and didn’t get what we came for even though it was hinted at several times. I hate the media.
Everyday on my commute, i get stuck behind someone on their phone. Usually it's at a red light and they sit there looking down after the light turns green. Beep the horn and instead of going, they look at you in the mirror all confused.
@@Mr.Mopar.23-7 i rather use my phone at a light when driving though i usually don’t it’s probably the most safest way to see if anything important come up and if you need to contact anyone just pull over
Here in Australia, I see people on their phones every day. Not just young people, but mothers with kids in their cars. what part don’t they understand? My son died for way less than this horror. The laws need to get way more strict and enforced. MAKE people understand what they stand to lose. Nothing on a mobile phone is that important that it can’t wait.
Let's don't forget that distracted driving includes eating, texting, talking on phone ,tuning the radio, etc.Anything that takes your eyes off the road.
You are right Timothy. Sometimes it takes me a few seconds just to get the temperature in my car adjusted. There are many ways a person can be distracted.
I'm a truck driver and I have literally seen cars tailgating other cars while on their phones as they drive by cops sitting in the medium and not once did they go after the offender. In 5 years I've seen it happin a dozen times easy.
Well when Karma comes it will be too late for some. Sometimes, the aggressor isn't always the one who gets hurt though. When someone tailgates me, if possible, i pull over and let them go. Like yesterday one was riding (kissing) my rear. I was going the speed limit. So I pull over. There was a trucker just pulling out but he luckily stopped in time. I felt bad that I should have waited. But glad he didn't get hit. When I pulled back out to go, I signaled for trucker to go ahead of me. He waved, so I guess all was well.
@@meredithbenjamin6694 I've been doing the same, Meredith. If someone is tailgating me, I often pull over now, too, and let them go on. It didn't occur to me that the person might have been on his cell p hone texting or something, until I started reading some of these comments. Geez, some people are so addicted to their phones, they can't seem to wait until they get home-or to pull over- so they can look at their phones again. Anyway, I do hope the police start to pull these drivers over who are causing problems from trying to look at their phones while driving.
People can do all kinds of crap just like that, on their phones, not using their turn signals and running people off the roads completely, all of that goes completely "unnoticed" as we should say by the police, but God forbid you have an expired registration sticker by one or two days, you'll be pulled over in an instant for that! Most of these police are not actually out there for people's safety, they are just out there as a revenue collector for the state to ticket people for a bunch of BS that doesn't put anyone in danger like expired registration stickers.
An app for your car to turn off phones and texts while it was moving would be a money maker to the first automobile group that makes one. You can't trust people to be responsible. That has been proven over and over again.
You're on to something. All cellphone manufacturers should add software that puts the onus back on the driver. Something you are obligated by law to activate when you enter and drive a vehicle. This way passengers could still use their phones when a vehicle is in motion. The technology is already being used. I can't do anything on my Jeep infotainment system when it is in motion. The phone should ask if you are the driver. If you hit "yes", it switches to driver mode and disables the phone. If you hit "no" , and you drive and kill someone while using it, you're legally responsible. Imagine the young drivers this would save.
Mostly all, if not all, new cars have Bluetooth available in them so hands free is easy to set up. It pairs with as many phones as you want, so there’s no reason to be on the phone. My car even reads text messages out loud to me and I can answer them out loud as well, but I really don’t. I only answer calls from my husband and children. The rest can wait. All semis need to be equipped with the same things. Especially when you factor in the weight of a fully loaded truck and the distance it takes them to safely come to a stop.
I was passing a truck driver on the freeway that was swerving all over the place and noticed he was on his cell phone texting so I looked at him 😡 and shook my head and he stopped 😃
@@lelaweber47 I mean it is kind of true though. It's only on the news, because it was a semi truck. I know of several texting and driving crashes around here that get no attention. Crap if you text and drive and get pulled over it's still a slap on the wrist. Maybe if they'd make it more serious ticket or loss of license. People will stop being on their phones. I can't count the times I've almost been ran off the road, because of people on their phones. I won't even answer a call while driving. It can wait until I stop somewhere.
@@Corky3D its on the news because it’s a horrific accident. if the news reported every single accident that happened throughout the day there would be no time to report anything else.
@@lelaweber47 Like I said I've seen several horrific accidents that happened due to texting with deaths, not involving a semi truck and not get mentioned. Then you also have other not as horrific accidents with a truck and it gets mentioned a lot. One that didn't get any news was a 4 car accident on a highway similar to this, that killed 5 people with ejections, fault was texting and driving. We drove by the accident about 10-20 minutes after it happened. Only reason I knew the fault was, a friend of mines cousin was one of the deaths.
Either way this happens way to much for people only getting a slap on the wrist. EDIT: In Minnisota this is what you get if you are caught texting and driving not involving a crash. You get nothing basically. A couple hundred dollar fine, court fees and higher insurance. Slap on the wrist. "The first ticket is more than $120, which includes the fine plus court fees. The second and later tickets are more than $300, which includes the fine plus court fees. Potential for increased insurance rates. "
He should get more. I hated having a phone with me in the semi, Your wife calls, the Company calls, there always some problem that they want you to fix A hundred miles away. I retired and do not have a cell phone, it's the best thing to not have.
When will people learn if the message is that important, simply pull off the road safely then check your message. There's no message that's so important it's worth endangering others. We all make mistakes, nobody's perfect, however some mistakes are unforgivable.
That’s why he was charged with vehicular homicide. Sad part is everyone condemning the driver (as needed) is guilty of doing the same thing. The technology is is available. Unless phone is on headset or through car speakers it shouldn’t be operational. It’s that simple. I have 3 million miles under my belt and see distracted driving every day.
Bobby Brady That’s what I was getting at. I believe I know the traffic laws after 3 million no at fault accident miles in a 72 foot long 80,000 pound vehicle. Kinda makes me qualified
@@jeffreydidier5821 how dare you assume that everyone texts while driving? Some of us have common sense. My typical answer(after getting out of my car)to anyone who calls or texts me when I'm driving is, "I was driving and I'm not risking an accident just to answer my phone!" I don't understand why it's so hard for anyone to see the danger in this bad habit?
This is why I dont like to drive. I wont drive with a radio on and I dont take calls or texts. I dont even like to talk while Im driving. However I get so in my head sometimes I lose focus of what Im doing and Im terrified its going to happen some day while Im driving and someone will end up hurt or dead.
@B Annoying I do. I quit driving more than a dew blocks from my house. If I have to go further I have someone else drive. I know my limitations. I dont even want to go back to work till I have this problem fixed.
I have been operating motor vehicles, cars/trucks/motorcycles, and piloting planes, for many years. There is one rule I have had without exception. Radio, stereo system, is never operation within my hearing distance unless it is directly related to the operation of the vehicle, (my airplane for example). I have headphones in my cars (with multi jacks) and on my motorcycles for the entertainment of my passenger(s). I don't even have my cell phone turned on while using my vehicle. I'll speak to the caller when I'm stopped. Driving is too damned dangerous with all the idiots on the road. This past year I lost a young friend as a result of her using her cell phone, and not wearing her seatbelt.
1:54 It's actually way different than drinking and driving. It's way worse. If you're drinking and driving, and at least looking at the road, then that's a hell of a lot safer than not looking at the road at all.
I would argue that more than 1/4 of the crashes are from cell phones, you just can't prove it yet. I have lost 3 really good friends to cell texting/driving. 3 separate crashes over a period of 6 years. nothing is done about it. but if you had a beer three days ago, you go to jail forever.
Police now check the cell phone pings and can prove the vehicle driver was on their phone. The key is to pin down the exact time of impact, if witnessed. Or the cell times the impact by getting cut off. It's used in Canada all the time now.
That Truck Driver and use that term very lightly because he was nothing more than a steering wheel holder, needs to be held accountable and so does the company. Thoughts and Prayers to the family of Robert. My side note ( if there could one ) is as a truck driver myself, I can't count how many times I was forced to the shoulder by a four wheeler. SAD, very sad.
EVERYONE needs to pay attention to the road while driving. Stop trying to justify this dumbass killing this professor. It doesn’t matter if he’s a trucker or not he was still sitting there scrolling on his phone like a woman.
I’m 53 Years old, I’ve never texted in my life, not once! I literally don’t know how to text and I don’t want to ever learn either!I still have a flip phone!
I've been a professional truck driver for 25 years. Dont fear us. Most of us ARE professionals. Respect the space we need to safely operate tho. It's only the limited few who dont take this job seriously and act safely. Sadly, those are the ones who kill people and make the news.
I hope they go after four wheelers as much as it seems they want to target truck driver how come I didn’t see video of four wheelers on the phone I see it every day more than that of other truck driver
AGreed. Or, i think we need to have many more pay phones up and working now than there are. But I do think the communication companies are trying to get us dependent on our cell/Smart phones. That's why so many companies have these colorful interesting commercials that try to get you to download their company's app on your phone, to save you money and to make it easier and more convenient for you to get to their website because they know most people look things up on their phones today.
I really want to know if the driver was on the phone to dispatch and if the dispatcher called him en route. If you are a professional driver, you know this is a salient concern.
I work for Eby Brown and we have to watch this before we get on the road he was looking at houses that his girlfriend sent him there’s a movie called eight seconds
My job just had a meeting with us about this same thing. I use my head set. DOT tell us truck drivers anyway to use hand free devices. Come on truck drivers rules are in place for a reason. Consequences for every action and decision. #CDLGANG!!!
I drive truck. I see more people texting on their phones than I do not on their phones. As a truck driver. If I get caught by Law Enforcement with my phone in my hand. I not only have to pay the state fine. I have to pay $1750.00 Federal DOT fine. It's also an instant job loss. Because if the company you work for keeps you as a driver. They have to pay an $11,000 dollar fine. So instead of paying that, the driver will be fired instantly. Phone records can show if a person was texting at any given moment. I truly believe they need to check phone records in every crash now days. It should not matter if you caused the accident, or were hit. If they can prove you were texting. It should be an automatic fine of $5,000 dollars. Whether a person is at fault or not. If they are involved in a accident. They should receive that fine. Many times a person could have avoided a collision if they were paying attention, and not texting.
There's no excuse for distracted driving, but it's not as simple as just saying never do it. If you look at your speedometer, your eyes and attention are off the road. If you look in the side mirror you are distracted from looking ahead. If you scratch your leg you only have one hand on the wheel. If you adjust the A/C you're looking away and only using one hand. Etc. So, what's the solution? It depends on the situation. If you're in heavy traffic with other cars making all sorts of crazy moves and many onramps and offramps, then you can't afford to lose concentration for even a 1/4 of a second. But if you're cruising along an open highway, good weather, straight road, no onramps, no other cars around for long distances, wide road with rumble strips, etc, then you can afford to look away for 5 seconds. You just have to make safety your priority and be conscious of the situation and how much time you can afford, before doing it.
Suggestion: Turn your phone off before you start a vehicle. When there is an accident, the first thing the police will do it look at your cell phone. You can be accused of texting and driving even if your phone is in your purse.
Ok well I dont want see DOT officers driving down the road pecking on their laptops either stalking people, probably watching porn, video chatting and etc. And I stay seeing that.
They sit there saying with holding back the tears that the video was horrific. Show the video! Let the traveling public see it so they have first hand knowledge. But no....it’s far too graphic. “Trust us” is all we get.
The only way to tackle this issue is to ban cellphones, laptops, video games etc… In the 80’s and beyond that…no tech…people were more happy. Driving was so peaceful.
Distractive driving is the same as drinking and driving? Not sure I agree with that. Distractive driving could be anything that takes your eyes off the road. Could be a toddler moving around in the car. A pet too not behaving. But drinking and driving is what the person made a choose before they took to the wheel. Two different situations. I would disagree with that lady’s comparison.
Just last week... my husband got rear ended by a woman on her phone text... she didn’t hit the breaks, just slammed into him... now he has a collapsed disc in his neck 😡
When a cellphone is hitting multiple towers in short time and it’s gps is working The phone maker should be able to stop the phone from working And work only when the phone is at standstill or moving slowly from tower to tower
Sick of these Semi truck Drivers hauling loads and driving waaay to fast..... a Law needs to pass that Semis must remain in the right lane at all times and Govern the trucks to 55 MPH .... The weight of these trucks can kill 15 or people instantly
And I am sure that truck drivers are sick of people brake checking them on the freeway because their truck is slow and holding them up, potentially causing a fatal wreck somewhere behind them without them even knowing about it until the cops show up at their door.
If anyone was driving for eight seconds with their heads down, they must've been sleeping aswell, plus cop's do-it all the time, and they be damb'nere running into other cars on the streets and the HWY.. So what's gonna happen too them if they get caught?
Alot truck driver are on drugs, i was almost kills by truck driver too which he didn't stop while he knew he is crashing my car and he keep accelerate but luckily i get out of my car and wake in front of his truck to stop him from keeping accelerate his truck, alot of truck driver are heartless,he didn't said sorry or anything's and star blaming games which was he knew that his the one did wrong.i told him to court and sues him from more then two years and i won the casted.i feel so sorry for the policeman in this accident,God bless there families.
