That's more than drunk driving; he drove right over the one person after hitting them, then fled the scene. Needs to be years in prison and permanent suspension of licence.
Ok someone who's clearly and literally drunk is one thing. Someone who's had a few or is technically over the BAC limit is another thing. To be perfectly honest, a guy who has a few beers, then drives normally concentrating on driving and the traffic is miles better than one random, cellphone addicted nitwit, who can't stop staring at and tapping buttons on his cell phone. And those people are far more common on the roads than actual drunks.
It’s not the first time he’s driven drunk, it’s the first time he’s got caught. That’s what a judge in a local court used to say to anybody trying that excuse.
Not the first time the adults played in the road. They had enough time to get to the right. Just because you have the right to do something dumb instead of something safe like keep right and ride single file.
@billwendell6886 you kidding? The cyclists were in the right lane (slow lane). The drunk behind them was in a hurry trying to pass the car in the fast lane. You might find it annoying but they were doing what they were supposed to do. Defending drunk driving is a bad look on you
Tires can sometimes distribute the force widely enough while human bones are made to flex just enough to avoid fracture. I was once standing on a corner right next to a jogger whose foot was run over by a municipal bus that cut the corner too sharply (the curb was bevelled for wheelchair access)--the jogger screamed in shock but after a minute of sitting down and flexing his foot, realised it wasn't really injured and ended up jogging away.
He said his bike and his helmet saved him from serious head injures. He's a 69 year old retired physician. He was knocked unconscious, had a severe concussion, broken ribs and as far as I can tell a bruised leg but that's it. He also said he doesn't remember getting ran over and watched tbe video back and couldn't believe it.
It's unfortunate, but cyclists have to be more selective about where and when they ride on city streets. Regardless of whether or not the driver is caught, the damage that can occur can last a lifetime.
In nyc you're not allowed on the side no matter how unsafe the road is i once got a ticket riding on the sidewalk and i was riding extremely slowly guess they rather have cyclists get hit by cars
Once again proving a little common sense goes a long way. No one thinks about the consequences of their arrogance until it's too late. Ride single file, stay out of the way of fast moving hunks of metal that weigh 2 tons. No one owns the road, but cars against bikes never goes well for the 2 wheeler. Why chance it?

Remove his driving license for life. It is one thing to be driving drunk, another one to hit people but driving over them to escape. That is a person who forfeited his civil rights in my book.
They’ll probably find another incident in his record. __ On another note, BOTH cars were speeding, considering the presence a group of bicyclists. The black car was going too fast in passing them. I doubt they will pursue it, but I bet a couple cyclists, including the one with the camera, had their route software devices running that tells the speed they were going, & then you can work out the speed of the cars. I also wonder if the black car driver was drunk & they were racing. Maybe they know each other. They should contact the other driver for witness report, and dig a little.
Agree, the driver of the back vehicle appeared to be speeding, but hard to say, we need to know the speed limit is on that road. On the flip side, the cyclists should have been in single file over to the far right, instead of road hogging in parallel. Still, no excuse for the driver to intentionally run them over like that.
@@thepriusgod Yep US is really a fall off country, these kind of people like the guy you mentioned? Agreeing the the suspect and not the victim is crazy
Riding on the road isn't the problem, inattentive and malicious drivers are. I'm all of pedestrian / cyclist / car driver / truck driver, and I look out for the wellbeing of all other road users while I am using it too. It isn't my road, or my lane, or my crossing, it is public space paid for by taxpayers, of which cyclists make up a significant contingent.
@@LayzeeGiant Nobody lives forever, going by that logic even crossing the road is risky behaviour. I enjoy road cycling, and do it whenever possible. It's great for the body and biomechanically perhaps the best exercise. Makes me stronger as a result, and yes, car has hit me (car 100% at fault) and got a generous insurance payout of close to $100K which paid for a new bike among other things, with no long lasting injuries to have to endure. Life is good
Cyclists that bike in the street like that have far more faith in others (gas-powered-vehicle drivers) than I do. Glad they are reportably doing ok as that looked horrible.
Exactly! This is also why I've never been interested in motorcycles. If someone makes a wrong turn and we crash, I get out of my car, we exchange insurance information and life goes on. If he makes a wrong turn and I'm on a bike or motorcycle, I may not live to talk about it!
Nah, you can only make this argument in Texas because arriving at your destination 3 minutes early matters more than the lives of others here. In any other state, it is an expectation of the driver to be wary of their surroundings and react accordingly. The cyclists were in the right-hand lane. If the driver wanted to go faster, they would simply move to the left lane to pass. This is an egregious example of road violence that only happens in Texas.
They said he ran, right? He's going to prison LOL. You never run, no matter if it's a light fender bender. As a child the school bus I was riding got hit and the driver fled. I bet he's still in prison for that one.
No injuries? Wait for the x-rays to come back before making that claim. Wait for the cyclists to tell you how they feel the next day. Sometimes injuries, road rash, and bruises don't show up until the following day.
What reporter would say "no injuries" with no Xrays and that video? That is so implausible. Not saying they weren't seriously hurt, but I'm sure they took xrays already.
claim most likely policy limit is going be the bare minimum and no lawyer would wanna to sue him to hold him personal accountable pass his insurance policy limit.
If you only knew how many people driving on the road around you are driving revoked, suspended, revoked as habitual offender, unlicensed for CDL or disqualified... you might not even want to drive.
I think 60 days in jail should be sufficient, with a conditional release: He must maintain continuous employment to pay $1200/mo for 20 years to repay the $250,000 medical bills and pain and suffering bond; or return to prison for 7 years. And only be allowed to drive a vehicle equipped with a certified breathalyzer, which won’t allow the car to be operated if the BAC is more than 0.01 and which must be inspected for tampering every 90 days; and with an automatic collision avoidance system, like that Subaru may have. Subsequent DUI/DWI conviction or other felony conviction or operating an unrestricted vehicle within 10 years would be a mandatory 20 year prison sentence. That gives the guy a chance to mend his ways and live a meaningful life, instead of either a slap on the wrist or just uselessly rotting in prison. All would depend on what the court would find his character to be. That’s my opinion.
The thing about that is, there are people who get charged and convinced of dwi without any evidence other than an officer saying they saw something. So, no failed blood alcohol test, no video evidence, no failed sobriety test, no evidence whatsoever other than an officer telling a judge "they seemed to be impaired". Things like this are tragic, but I for one will never under any circumstances advocate for the law to have the authority to give you jail time simply because they feel like it. If we're being honest, they kind of already can. We just can't throw our hands in the air everytime something unfortunate happens and beg the government to govern us harder. This never leads to anything good.
I don't think those were minor injuries. Here is what the Fort Worth Start-Telegram said about the injuries: The victims were identified as Thomas Geppert, 69, and Deborah Eads, 65, both of Grapevine. Geppert’s injury was listed as a “severe laceration” and he was hospitalized at Baylor Scott & White Medical Center in Grapevine on Monday night. Eads’ injuries were also listed as “severe laceration” but were treated by paramedics at the scene and did not require hospitalization.
I was hit by a car while walking across an intersection. Driver didn't yield. Hit me hard. Broke my arm. Large cut on the back of my head, took eleven staples to close. Banged up my right knee. Turned out the driver was a 17-year old kid, driving home, and just three blocks away from his house.
@@francismarion6400 Pretty dumb comment man. It takes awhile to cross a street. Once you get the right of way as a pedestrian you have to go because traffic signals barely give you enough time to cross. It's the responsibility of the motorist to make sure there are no pedestrians crossing because god forbid an elderly person, child, or impaired person is trying to get somewhere.
As other have mentioned, the bike may have distributed the load. He was also unconscious and limp when the car ran over him which might have helped. And he was probably thoroughly warmed up and loose from biking, thus reducing injuries.
Geppert, a 69-year-old grandfather and retired physician, says he left the hospital with cuts, bruises, a fractured rib and a concussion. His bike is destroyed. “I think the bike saved me,” he said.

They almost always do. It's a big racket, a money-maker for the local govts. The person pays for an expensive counseling program and gets it back. Even if they have done it multiple times. Same for medical licenses, unfortunately. A doctor can sell prescriptions, work while on drugs, lose their license and get it back after a year or two.
The highways were not designed for bicycles, just motor vehicles. It's not a biking area. It's just not safe. Theres so many drivers that there's not even enough roads for the cars. Biking in DFW is just for the insane.

Looks to me like the driver was trying to pass the vehicle in the left lane. If that’s the case all his attention is on passing the vehicle rather than paying attention to what’s in front of him. It’s sort of like people who swerve around a car that has stopped at a crosswalk only to hit the pedestrians the stopped car was waiting for.
