Lesson Ideas:
1. While listening and watching, show sign language for letters A-D. Students will learn that RONDO form = A-B-A-C-A-D-A. Students may also learn about the composer Zoltán Kodály and/or the Anker clock in the background.
2. Students move with teacher. Introduction = Starting low, slowly and jerkily transition to a standing position. A = Students imitate teacher with stiff/robotic movements with beat - Field goal hands up, then down, up, down - walk a slow circle R in place - field goal hands up, down, up down - walk a slow circle L in place. B-D = Students creating their own individual movement, each one different from the last created movement.
3. For a lesson on another day, have students work in groups of 3-5 per group. In 5 minutes, each group creates 4 movements, one for each section. Introduction and coda may also be created by each group or identically planned for each group. Each student in each group might be in charge of one letter (A-D) and/or the introduction and/or the coda. Students will plan movements without music, then after 5 minutes practice once with the music. Finally, half of the class will perform while the other half observes as the audience, and then the roles will reverse. Performers and audience members are expected to be silent during both performances. If desired, the audience may secretly observe one or more performing groups to evaluate the performers: whether they demonstrated RONDO, moved with stiff/robotic/staccato movements, moved with the beat, and/or whatever rubric you as the teacher decides.
