There was something in those ballerinas from 50's, 60's, 70's - they weren't as skinny as ballerinas now, they didn't have such extensions, but when you look at them, their dance is very strong technically, but still very artistic, poetic and light. Thanks for all your videos, they're amazing.
A guest teacher of mine was a student of Bregvadze, he showed us this video and told us that no one has ever been able to do this dance since this video, that's something I call breathtaking.
Ninel came to teach in Los Angeles for a few weeks in 1995. Within one week her class was packed not because we all knew who she was but because her class was so good. She pushed us harder than any teacher i've ever had even though i've taken from many ballet teachers in New York since 1977 and many in Los Angeles since 1993. In Ninels class people improved quickly because her class was so exellent and because she expected everyone to work at 110%.

Задирать ноги до небес это ещё далеко не всё, это быстро забывается. Именно поэтому ,когда много лет назад выпало счастье видеть Кургапкину и Барышникова в балете Дон Кихот зал просто ревел от восторга в едином порыве . Больше такого видеть не приходилось, хотя очень много раз смотрела балет с разными хорошими исполнителями.
xxxFreyjackxxx This is great, thanks for posting. I only wish this sort of thing was danced more often. Nowadays a lot of ballet lacks artistry, everybody seems to only think of technic.. Both are vital.
I am not a fan of this sugary Viennese waltz music, but I am more impressed by the humorous choreography and perfect skills of the two performers. The way Boris Bregvadze tosses Ninella Kurgapkina in the air and catches her in such a care-free and easy-going manner is stunning. No wonder, they were from the Kirov Ballet, St. Petersburg, next to Bolshoi, the world's best classical ensemble!
+BytomGirl By "sugary" most people mean "Violins" Ithink... I agree with you, Strauss has depth and muscle. And speaking of muscle, Mr. Bregvadze must have shoulders like an ox, all sleeked away under his perfectly tailored jacket!
Violins don't have to be sugary :) If most people call it that then don't know what sugary exactly means. I equate sugary with kitsch. Yes, he had to be very strong for such lifts. Amazing. Also, see Bolshoi from 1940 I believe dancing Moszkowski's waltzf

Ninel Kurgapkina became the women's soloist coach at the Kirov Ballet and appears in my film, "Backstage at the Kirov" In the class she teaches are the ballerinas, Tanya Terekhova, Ludmila Lopukhova (Yakovleva) and Ira Chistiakova.

Boris Bregvadze was a very handsome, good looking man and amazing dancer and later teacher at Vaganova. Sad that Kurgapkina died in a car accident. She was a beautiful lady. Together they were the most gorgeous dancing couple.

I'm glad this came around again. It's one of my favourite dance pieces. Enchanting and beautiful. I get a little tearful watching it... happy tears... it's wonderful.
