Viens is one of those gorgeous little villages in the dramatic, wild landscape east of Apt that happily the guidebooks don’t bother with.
Perched on a rocky crag for the last 1000 years, Viens gives three distinct impressions depending on which route you approach it on: a fortress from the north, citadel from the west and a typical perched Provence village from the south.
Surrounded by magnificent landscapes and perched on a rocky outcrop for a millennium, Viens is an ancient village which has retained its appearance as a medieval stronghold.
By visiting Viens you will be able to discover the many testimonies of the tumultuous past of the village.
You will enter the village through the Saracen Gate pierced in the ramparts and can admire its Clock Tower and its Portal.
You will enjoy strolling through its narrow streets where you can come across beautiful 13th century residences as well as charming old houses.
One of them is called the Maison de Monier de la Quarrée-Montauciel... it really deserves a look as well as the Maison de Monier d'Arnaud.
You can also admire a Renaissance castle in Viens which underwent major transformations in the 19th century.
From the surroundings of the castle you will have a panoramic view which will be offered to you, from the Montée de la Pousterle you can admire the gorges of Lure.
Around the village, magnificent walks are to be done, nature is superb here: Viens is located on the border of the Alpes de Haute Provence, not far from the vast fields of lavender, in the heart of the Luberon Regional Natural Park and one of the extremities of the ocher road and the famous cliffs of Colorado Provençal... even the most jaded will be seduced!
