Nicolaus Bruhns (auch Nikolaus, Nikolaus) (1665 in Schwabstedt - 29. März 1697 in Husum) war einer der größten Organisten und Komponisten seiner Zeit. Er studierte bei Dieterich Buxtehude, die ihn als einen seiner besten Schüler berücksichtigt. Zunächst lernte er Musik von seinem Vater Paul Bruhns (1640-1689?) Wer Organist an Schwabstedt wurde und möglicherweise ein Schüler von Franz Tunder. Bruhns studierte später Komposition und Orgel mit Dieterich Buxtehude. Mit Hilfe von Buxtehude, erhielt eine Stelle als Geiger und Komponist am Hof ​​von Kopenhagen, und im Jahre 1689 wurde Organist an der Stadt Husum, seiner letzten Position vor seinem Tod im Alter von 31 oder 32 Jahren.
Obwohl es in erster Linie war Organist, war einer der größten Komponisten der geistlichen Kantaten seiner Zeit. Er hat auch Kammermusik komponiert, jetzt leider verloren. I've known Bach's music all my life, Buxtehude since about 18, but heard about (and heard) Bruhns only yesterday. What a treasure trove! Thanks for this.

Upon hearing the opening bars, I thought "Wow! This could be a tribute to the late Piet Kee who recorded these works with great artistry at Roskilde a generation ago." It's wonderful to hear different interpretations of such works. Bravo!!

I am fascinated! Have been a Buxtehude-admirer for a long time, and yesterday I discovered Bruhns... loved the music. Now that I have found these preludes and this description, I am not surprised at all that he was Buxtehude's student... :} and completely understandable that J.S. Bach admired his works! (Years ago, I heard "if you like Bach, you will probably like Buxtehude". Now I can say "if you like Buxtehude, you will surely like Bruhns".)

Absolutely. The fine tradition of German organ works culminated in J. S Bach, who admired Buxtehude, Bruhns, Pachelbel-- in fact, it's hard to think of a Baroque composer both preceding and contemporaneous to Bach who didn't influence him in some way.

Genius! I listened all Bach's and Buxtehude's organ works for years and found this compositions. Now I can say that Bruhns is the best composer (for me).

Another interesting detail about the composer: he was able two play the violin accompanying himself with the organ pedals.

Wonderful music and wonderful played as well! But why don't the pictures in the video show the organ on which this music is played? Pity... Before reading the comments I thought we listen to the Gabler Organ in Weingarten, which is showed in the video...

My first contact with this author was on score with his praeludium in G major, but with respect to recordings it was with the first one of the here present, i.e., the little in E minor. Further I got contact with his fantastic chorale prelude or fantasia on "Nun komm', der Heiden Heiland" on Commer's "Musica Sacra, vol. I. All of them great! The work in G minor takes a descendent progression in its main notes, going the reverse way of BuxWV 225 (Canzonetta in A minor attributed to Buxtehude). The pictures in this video are from the Benedictine Abbey in Weingarten, Southwest Germany.

Bach admired not only Bruhns, but Pachelbel, Vivaldi, Buxtehude and Reinken (as an organist) as well (among others). He incorporated some works by other authors because very FEW would have had such a highly refined musical taste, as to select the best works available. For instance, if you have ever listened to his Concert in A minor for 4 harpsichords and orchestra BWV 1065, you'll realize what a wonderful work that was, based on Vivaldi's "Concerto per quattro Violini". The greatest talents are the only ones that should be empowered to judge other authors' works, I think. Therefore it would be the highest honor to be considered a worthy composer by such a genius as Bach, IMHO.

Bach paid homage to a number of composers: Toccata & Fugue in D min BWV 565 (Pachelbel Fantasia in D min quote Bach used for the subject of the Fugue), Passacaglia in C min (Andre Raison, Christe: Trio en passacaille from Messe du Deuxième ton), a number Fugues on subjects of different composers. Besides the Harpsichord and Organ Transcriptions (including the G major of his student in composition ) Bach's Tilge, Höchster, meine Sünden is a parody cantata based on Pergolesi's Stabat Mater. Bach possessed a variety of compositions of composers (including contemporaries, Gottfried Heinrich Stölzel and Georg Phillip Telemann) and copied Nicolas de Grigny Premier livre d'orgue in 1713. Bach possessed the most eclectic taste and definitely the highest honor to be included in his collection.

Irineo Romero Quite true about his pupils, the Organ Concerto in C and G major are arrangements of his student (and student Bach's cousin J Walter) Prince Johann Ernst von Saxe-Weimar's violin concertos. Prince Johann Ernst of Saxe-Weimar died at a young age 18 from either an leg infection received during a carriage accident (or from possibly a metastatic sarcoma (so says wikipedia??). Following his death, six of the prince's concertos were sent to Telemann, who edited and published them in 1718 which Johann Ernst had started to have them set before his death. Telemann's own first publication, a 1715 set of six violin sonatas, was dedicated to Johann Ernst. The prince studied at the University of Utrecht between February 1711 and July 1713. It is thought that Johann Ernst furthered his understanding of music at this time. From Utrecht, he could visit such centres as Amsterdam and Düsseldorf and it is known that he had copies of Italian music sent back to Weimar. (Household bills for the year from 1 June following his return record the cost of copying, binding and shelving music.) In particular, it is thought that he might have encountered Vivaldi's opus 3 set of violin concertos. The prince's interest in collecting music was sufficiently well known that P. D. Kräuter, when requesting leave of absence to study with Bach in Weimar, mentioned the French and Italian music that the prince was expected to introduce there. Kräuter also praised Johann Ernst's virtuosity as a violinist. The Bach transcriptions were created roughly during the period July 1713-July 1714 between Johann Ernst's return from Utrecht and the prince's final departure from Weimar. There is some scholarly debate on Johann Ernst's role in the creation of these arrangements, whether he commissioned some from one or both of the musicians or whether Bach, in particular, was studying some of the works collected by the prince for their own sake. There are suggestions that on a visit to Amsterdam in February 1713 the Prince may have heard the blind organist J. J. de Graff, who is known to have played keyboard arrangements of other composers' concertos.In any case, Bach's encounter with the prince's collection, and especially the Italian music it contained, had a profound influence on the development of the composer's musical style.

Renshen1957 Yup, Walther wrote a Choral for organ titled "Jesu, meine Freude" if I'm not mistaken, which I heard live played at a big 4-manual pipe organ. It was excellent I thought, although not as inspired as Bach himself (nobody could have hoped to do that, certainly). The prince's concert was arragned for organ by Bach in G-major and it's very sweet/inspired IMHO. I've heard it played at a great Silbermann organ in Sachsen-Weimar, if I'm not mistaken.You should try to locate it, I suggest. Greetings Sir :) .

@Orgelix Ganz genau,der Edskes hat sie wiederhergestellt,und ziemlich gut,wie ich finde. Originales Pfeifwerk war ja nur noch ganz wenig vorhanden. Ich hab sie schon in echt gehört. Sehr edle Intonation generell,die Pedalzungen geben ein mächtiges aber butterweiches Fundament,wie man hier gut hören kann. Es gibt übrigens noch eine zweite hist. Orgel in Melle,gleich der ev.Kirche umme Ecke in der kath.Kirche,eine Klausing von 1713,restauriert 2009 von Ahrend,sehr hübsch...

Unfortunately, he died from black plague at the tender age of 31. The fact he died so young and that only 5 of his organ works have survived is to be regretted.

@HERIBERTO37ify Ja,eine wundervolle Orgel ist das. Der Erbauer war Christian Vater (1679-1756) in Hannover,ein Schüler von Arp Schnitger,und wurde 1724 vollendet. Sie hatte 27 Register auf zwei Manualen. Nach vielen Umbauten mit großem Verlust an originaler Substanz rekonstruierte Bernhardt Edskes 2000 die Orgel. Heute mit 37 Registern auf drei Manualen. :)

Hallo, ich würde gern wissen,welche Orgel hier gespielt wird. Oder ist es eine Hauptwerk-Aufnahme ? Der eher geringe Hall würde auf Hauptwerk hindeuten. Hauptwerk ist schon eine tolle Sache !

@Orgelix Hm,die Klangähnlichkeit zu der Nordener Orgel ist frappierend,aber ich glaube eher,dass es sich um die (rek.)Vater-Orgel in Melle handelt. Von dieser gibt es auch einige tolle Videos hier. Gleicher Interpret. :) Schade dass Nicolaus Bruhns nicht ein paar Jahre länger leben durfte,was hätte er uns noch viele aufregende Musique bescheren können...
