The name of Louis Vierne (1870-1937) will be associated with organ music immediately. As did quite a few other 19th-century organists/composers he used the instrument as a means to perform ‘symphonic’ music. The scope in this respect was greatly enhanced by the new organs built at the time, for instance by Aristide Cavaillé-Coll.

Some years before graduating from the Paris Conservatoire with a coveted first prize in 1894, Louis Vierne was serving as an assistant to his teacher, Charles Widor, both at the Conservatoire itself and at the Church of Saint-Sulpice. Both in teaching and composing he upheld and developed the heritage of the French organ school, which was maintained by his students such as Henri Mulet, Marcel Dupré and Nadia Boulanger. In 1900 he won the most coveted post of all as titulaire at Notre-Dame, placing him in charge of the instrument which had already attained iconic significance as the masterpiece of its designer and builder, Aristide Cavaillé-Coll.
In developing beyond Franck and Widor the genre of the symphony for solo organ with the superb sextet of works recorded here, Vierne was inspired by the orchestrally conceived instruments of Cavaillé-Coll. He created whole new families of stops and voicing and coupling mechanisms that allowed an organ to imitate virtually every instrument of the orchestra. This enabled composers to write for the organ as if it were a symphony orchestra. Vierne’s six symphonies attracted admiration from the unlikely quarter of Debussy, and they exercised a formative influence on the young Messiaen. All six symphonies are cast in minor tonalities, with an expressive key signature of cavernous Gothic gloom periodically illuminated, especially in the finales, by brilliant shafts of light, and by flowing currents of melody in the gentler Andante movements, swirling like incense in the heavy air.
Hayo Boerema recorded this newly released set of the complete symphonies on the superb Marcussen-built organ at the main church in Rotterdam, the Laurenskerk, where he has been organist since 2005. In 2009 he received the silver medal from the Société Académique des Arts, Sciences et Lettres in Paris in recognition of his achievements in performing and promoting the masterpieces of the French Organ School.

Merci. Grace à vous, j'ai retrouvé une symphonie dont j'ignorais tout, que j'avais écoutée à 26 ans et qui a continué à chanter dans ma tête jusqu'à présent (79 ans). Merci à Vous !

What a joyous composer! I am a violinist - and so have found the organ so fascinating as it`s a different world. This music is, to use a modernism: Something Else!

Vierne was there at the advent of the orchestral organ. Of course, you can only do so much with ten fingers, but the variety of instrumentation certainly inspired some new playing, but overall, it didn't change one of the organ's most impressive features: its power. Nothing better than an organist laying into a power chord at the conclusion of a stirring piece, allowing that swell of sound to circle and reverberate throughout the building. Blessed.

The perpetual sound of the Pipe organ. And this one sounds beautiful!! Always the pedal point it seems, throughout.

I am hearing this composer for the first time. Where I studied for one year in the boarding school, we had an organ in our chapel which was played mostly by our English man teacher - cum-pianist/organist/guitarist and chaplain, all rolled in to one . He used to teach us organ/piano and also choir singing. So whenever I hear playing of organ it evokes nostalgia about my boarding school days and life in the hostel, going to the chapel every evening, learning organ /piano and playing it occasionally. This music brought happy memories of those school days. Anything which touches our memories we humans tend to like it.. Likewise I liked the organ music of my newly found composer and surprisingly it was excellent. Thanks Brilliant Classics for bringing it.

@@nfwqhrfh The organ itself has such a flamboyant design; I love the bright colours - but also - I love the way that the surround follows and emphasises the pipe locations. The picture angle certainly points that out to us! All that with such a glorious sounding instrument and an out of this world performer - and I really mean that. I shouldn`t really pick out movements - as they are all so beautiful - but I will mention two that I find particularly captivating :- The Allegro vivace on track 4 @ 21.05 and the other one is the Scherzo, which is the third movement from another symphony at 2.03.19. The first one I chose for it`s profound character with the lovely canon in the middle section - and the second choice because of the constant flying around in wonderful chromatic passages, to mention just one aspect - and then finishing in such an understated way. Sorry if I have laboured my contribution, - it is a very inadequate one, I know, but it`s not every day you hear something like this.

I hate being interrupted by the adverts!!! Fancy RU-vid having an arrangement where a talented artist who has spent many intense years of study - only to be interrupted by a moron trying to sell me a new phone or program for a laptop! It makes me so ANGRY! Why should I have to pay for somebody not to interrupt an organ recital, Orchestral concert - or some interesting descriptive program? The scherzo in 5 is just so joyful! What a wonderful composer and wonderful performer to get the sounds to our humble ears! B.W.
