I think it says a lot about Bots character the fact she wanted to surprise her gran with Troy and the donation. She obviously adores and loves her gran. Thanks for giving Bot a second chance Troy. We are often at times quick to judge, but in this case I feel that they was taking advantage of the opportunity in order to survive and who can blame them under the circumstances, they are working poor.

Kids in Vietnam tend to be more street smart because they are usually outside on the streets working at an early age as opposed to Westernized countries where they are mostly at home in front of the tv or computer or at school

Bot is such a gem. She's nurturing to her cousin and grandmother and hospitable to you by giving you a chair. . My grandson eats like a hog and is skinny like her.. Sometimes no matter how much they eat they don't gain weight. It cracks me up how you talk about the kid because it's the truth. Observations, not judgement. Watching the three videos of this encounter were certainly telling. She is a savvy salesperson and probably views most interactions as transactional. My experience that's common of poor people in my country and others. You said in the first that your insights, instincts, and judgements usually proved correct. I think that's true as far as it goes. I don't always agree with what you do with that knowledge but that's totally your call. As far as this young woman, she definitely works and plays it. I'm sure she loves her grandmother but I don't doubt the reason she wanted the money to be a surprise is so it could be surprisingly less. She initially lied about eating at the first stop even though she walked up apparently spitting out seeds. She made lots of significant looks at the women while she was accepting money, and also initially said "Gran was selling." That one is easy to rationalize- don't let the man know you are out alone; others are more difficult to figure. She seems to do a lot of cold reads to get footing and then relies on her wits as best she can. She didn't want a ride until after the long conversation with the vendors which certainly gave her time and opportunity to work it out with Gran. They are doubess poor but what they had seemed nice enough. Clearly well kept. As I said, no judgements and none of these should necessarily be disqualifying. Long-suffering angels, unable to lie, innocent as an infant, are creatures of fairy tales. Bummer about school but we can't even be sure of that story. But even if she's 100% sponsored for school, the money made from working is money needed and spent immediately and would be money lost. Working those hours and school are not very compatible. Having said all that, I enjoy her and hope she finds her way into a stable, happy life. I doubt she'll ever throw Gran under the bus and would lie constantly to avoid that.

Poor Bot. It is plain she is so anxious about her grandmother's health. At the moment she is the de facto head of the household. She knows if something happens to her grandmother she will be on the streets on her own. No wonder she felt the pressure to leave school and spend more time earning what she can. I know she's street wise, but for Bot, that is a necessity not an option. As others have said, she is a very intelligent kid with a lot of potential if she could be given the proper support for a good education, but while she is under pressure to be the household's main earner that is unlikely to happen. Perhaps the group can come up with a realistic action plan and enough donors to make it happen.

I miss seeing Bot. Don't know why but this kid really touched my heart. Hope she and her grandmother are doing well.

To me, she is just well raised by her grandma in terms of the general mannerism to be successful in society. I don't see anything wrong with her, except the lost opportunity of not attending mainstream day school.

Please stop ascribing Bot's small size to her being premature. Being premature doesn't make any difference to your eventual size. In Bot's case it is most likely down to genetics and poor nutrition.
