"I don't want to be a burden of this society when I come" that is the voice of a true immigrant, refugee if you could say. Someone who came to a new land to make something out of what he had. How proud he must be.

Yesterday, I watched a video on Cambodian refugees who were gang members and had committed crimes were repatriated back to Cambodia. Their reason was being a minority, they suffered racist bullying from the blacks, so they had to join a gang to fend for themselves. So, I asked, "What about the Vietnamese, Chinese, Japanese, Koreans, Indians, Sikhs and Chinese Cambodians?"

Not every VN immigrant can achieve the heights of success that this VN immigrant did. However, all law-abiding immigrants no matter their professional success deserve to be treated fairly and rightly by their fellow American citizens. They should not be used to pit one community against another or to denigrate any other communities. Not every refugee is lucky enough to become legal immigrants due to the changing political climate of this country. The VN people were lucky to be accepted into the US after the war ended. I see these refugees similarly as those flooding our borders currently because they too are escaping extreme violence, persecution and poverty in their home country. When we (my VN family) escaped from VN on a rickety boat taking the ultimate risk with our own lives, we felt like we had no choice but to flee. The refugees escaping their homelands today are no different, they merely wish to find new homes to bring up their children where they could grow up to achieve their full potential. As a former refugee I empathize with all refugees whether they are economic or political refugees. To see half the country so hateful and demeaning to these people breaks my heart. The republican party that once accepted the VN refugees after the war ended are now so anti refugees and anti-immigrants is disheartening. One indelible mark that remained to this day in my heart and mind was an American oil rig employee peering down into my 9-year old face with a beatific smile. The food that the oil rig supplied our boat gave us not just sustenance but hope to keep finding safe harbor. That is the face of the America I love and will forever be indebted to. America you are the beacon of hope but your light has dimmed now because of all the hate, lies and vitriol spewing from members of Congress and a large segment of our country. If the VN boat people happen today and not in the 70s and 80s, none of us would ever be able to settle here and make something of ourselves like this young naval captain.

I was fortunate to grow up near a large Vietnamese community in So. Cal. and learned to love Vietnamese food. The stories of what many of them went through both coming to the U.S. and after they arrived are pretty incredible. Not only surviving escaping Vietnam but starting a business and four of five people living in the back room for years because they couldn't afford both the cost of an apartment and expenses on their business. No complaining, just hard work, so "I didn't want to be a burden on this society when I come" does not surprise me in the least. That community has grown, a lot, over the decades and more power to them.

I came here as a refugee from VN as well. Yup lots of us did that. We couldn't afford so 5 of us renting one bed room apt. I am the youngest so I slept in the couch we picked up on the side of the street for around 5 years. I did manage to get a BS from one of the good Universities here in the North East and been living a comfortable life since graduation. Looking back I still don't know how I survived those years :-)

Chinese became the president in the Philippines, prime ministers in Thailand and have become cabinet ministers in Malaysia. This shows that the Filipinos, Thais and Malay Muslims are not racist but hospitable people.

@Raza Khan You're a goofball. America. Where the roads are paved across a continent. A hospital every fifteen miles, McDonald's every 5, a branded mega grocery store every 3, and generally gregarious polite well armed people. Ya hate us, cuz ya ain't us.
