Vietnam Veteran First Homeless at Five Years Old.

Lester lives in his car in Springfield, Missouri. He first experienced homelessness at five years old. I can't even imagine what it must be for a child to be homeless at such a young age. Lester is the second person now that has told me they were first homeless at the age of five.
Lester's mother died in her arms when he was 15 years old. Only days after his mother's funeral, Lester's dad wanted to move another woman into their house. When Lester spoke up, his father beat him, and Lester ran away.
Lester's third time of experiencing homelessness was after he returned from Vietnam. He says when Vietnam Vets came home nobody wanted them. Overall Lester says he has been homeless around 25 years.
Lester receives $770 on Social Security Disability every month. After car payment and insurance, there is not enough money for rent. Lester is one of the many mobile homeless in America sleeping in their vehicles.
The good news is that Lester has been approved to go live at Eden Village, a new tiny homes community. I toured Eden Village and I hope to have a vlog up about it soon. It's an amazing place.
Lester is excited but also cautious. For most homeless people, moving into housing starts a whole new battle of challenges. I have been off the streets for 23 years and I still struggle sometimes.

About Invisible People:
Since its launch in November 2008, Invisible People has leveraged the power of video and the massive reach of social media to share the compelling, gritty, and unfiltered stories of homeless people from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C. The vlog (video blog) gets up close and personal with veterans, mothers, children, layoff victims and others who have been forced onto the streets by a variety of circumstances. Each week, they’re on InvisiblePeople.tv, and high traffic sites such as RU-vid, Twitter and Facebook, proving to a global audience that while they may often be ignored, they are far from invisible.
Invisible People goes beyond the rhetoric, statistics, political debates, and limitations of social services to examine poverty in America via a medium that audiences of all ages can understand, and can’t ignore. The vlog puts into context one of our nation’s most troubling and prevalent issues through personal stories captured by the lens of Mark Horvath - its founder - and brings into focus the pain, hardship and hopelessness that millions face each day. One story at a time, videos posted on InvisiblePeople.tv shatter the stereotypes of America’s homeless, force shifts in perception and deliver a call to action that is being answered by national brands, nonprofit organizations and everyday citizens now committed to opening their eyes and their hearts to those too often forgotten.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to changing the way we think about people experiencing homelessness.

If people really give a shit, get off your asses and actually do something to change it.. Telling someone you'll pray for them, is what you say when you don't give a fuck, or don't know what else to say. People can shove that right up their ass.. This man has been in that struggle since 5years old! I am in awe of his strength. I wish for him to know the comfort of sleeping in his own bed for a long enough time to find some healing💞 Some of us just have it rough, but that's OK as long as we keep our humanity towards each other. I can't imagine how he's lived homeless so long and still has a positive and realistic attitude. He's very special. I'm sure as a 5 year old he never dreamed his life would be what it has been. If my sons move out, I would need to share with my sister or move in my aging parents. Family is such a blessing. It's expensive to live alone. You have to fortunately to be able to find someone to rent a room from. That isn't always easy to do.

@noway4517
@noway4517 5 лет назад
Our society is really asocial when you think about it. Everyone is expected to move out of their parents home as soon as possible and get their own home, no matter if they have money saved or not and even though it would be much environmentally friendly if the house of the parents was full of people instead of 3 rooms being empty and still heated. Everyone has friends that earn the same amount of money as themselves, there is almost no friendship between poor and rich people and when someone suddenly falls out of that group because of job loss or depression or debts, they immediately loose all their friends and have to find new ones in their new group of poor people. Even relatives try to buy you by giving you money for graduating or for visiting them, these things should come out of your own free will, you should be the one that wants to have a certain degree to be educated and if you don't want that nobody should bribe you to do it with money and you certainly shouldn't visit people that you should care about just to get money or as a kid get some cake or something. Why do we have to be bride to do something for our family, why are we not feeling love for them out of our own heart? Maybe because our parents are always busy with making money when we are young, so we don't learn to love them and when we do love them our heart gets broken when they don't have time for us. Why are kids not allowed in the work place? Why do we need to be judged in school as if we are a product? Why do we learn to work only for ourselves instead of working together even though there are so many group projects in school? Maybe because we are always forced to work with people we don't know and maybe because we have to work with different people each time so we can't get to know them truly. Maybe we need small communities again, people who really know each other, who are really there for each other and help each other without judging.

Well, I have compassion on him, but the reality is that if you heard their story- from their perspective- many people would advice them to cut off the “ toxic” parent. He said he was using drugs 20 years ago- and I can imagine he wasn’t the father they needed or wished for. His problems didn’t just start now. I know he does care about them, but many neglected and abused children have to heal before forgiving and being able to open their hearts up. They suffered greatly no doubt from his trauma. They are dealing with their own- hopefully getting help and healing. Which he didn’t get- apparently.

That is the reason why people don't listen, they don't want to be depressed themselves. They want to live in their happy bubble of happy successful people and everyone that doesn't fit in anymore will be replaced by some other person who is still happy. Modern society gives us the opportunity to replace everyone because we are able to meet so many people. But we all know that we can be replaced too and that is really depressing.

I wasn't going to let them put me in a home that did not want me but only a check every month. I would not have wanted it any other way. No regrets. I lived in the warm states in the winter. For about 12 years I worked hard and partied hard then settled down. Used drugs and alcohol but was never homeless. I acknowledge I had a great support network so would never be destitute.

As a war time vet you qualify for a lot of different programs. I'm a USMC vet and spent 6 months in a veteran homeless shelter in 2013-14. It's a grant per diem program that will let you stay there up to 2 years free while they assist you finding permanent housing through HUD VASH or similar program. Of course availability depends on where you live, but you can go to any city where these programs exist as a vet. No veteran should be living in their car, there is help but you have to seek it out. The government won't track you down to help you, but help does exist.

No amount will ever be enough, but really the main problem for vets is that they don't know what is even available to them. I do volunteer work with vets and so many of them have no idea that they can get health care, pensions, housing assistance and even money to pay for car repairs. The problem is getting the vets to the right place to talk to the right people to start getting help. I have gotten a lot of help from the VA and non-profits, so I try to get other vets get as much help as they have earned form their service.

@shadow1 Because (1) some are told unreal stories - sometimes about there literally being gold on the street (I know two different people who were told this before they came to America). In more common cases, they see American television shows, where everyone is wealthy. (2) They hear about making a couple hundred dollars a week, which is worth much more in their country, and they have no idea how little it's worth in America. Yet, if they can even mail 5 bucks back to their family a week, that's a big deal in their homeland. (3) Many are refugees in countries that are in civil wars or international conflict, or they live in an area run by a drug cartel. Sure, America is better than that, no doubt. But that's not a trophy-worthy accomplishment. Don't get me wrong, there are first world offerings in America. But, as this man demonstrates, they are kept from many people, and, as he said "you are not promised nothing'". Far, far from it.

Even with a home, I want to be by myself. Even if there had been no such thing as government, if the church would just gather together, there would be no homelessness, and whatever homelessness that happens would end almost immediately. The church failed society. And, whatever you want to say about the homeless, or why they are homeless, the fact is, people are homeless, and that's a sad life, and the church is supposed to help, period. Like the guy in the video said, there's more to help than just one meal per week. We're thankful for the one meal per week, but, come on, church! And, no veteran should be homeless, anyway, whether the church helps or not. The VA needs to subsidize housing for vets. They risked their lives to protect the country, drafted or not, yet, when they get back home to this country, the country forgets them. It's like, "Thanks for almost dying for me. Now, go ahead and die in the streets." And, people still call them names, and things, like they call every other homeless person names. That's not right. The VA should pay up to half the vets' rent. So, the vet would still be doing for himself, but the government would be saying, "You are not forgotten." That would be a real "Thank you" for their service.

1955 doesn't add up, and the Vietnam war was almost over by 1973, he would of only been 18 like you said, and most of the Vietnam War Veterans are alot older than that, at least 5 to 10 years older than him, he would of been too young to be in the Vietnam War Era, could be wrong though, most of all the Vietnam War Veterans I have mostly seen were born in the 1940's to 1950, 1955 seems to young to be in the Vietnam War

When I was little, the older men were the World War 2 veterans, and the Vietnam War was in full swing. It strikes me that young folks today would see Lester the way I saw the WW II vets (my dad's generation). But I look at Lester and I see a teenage boy going off to war. The Vietnam vets were the teenagers of my childhood. It kills me that any vet is homeless, but especially the Vietnam vets because they got such a shitty deal from society when they came home, as if they were any less heroic than the men who fought in Normandy or Midway or Iwo Jima. Just because our society didn't support what our government was doing in Vietnam was no reason to vilify the poor soldiers who fought for their country just as breavely as in any other war. Lester has had it rough for far too much of his life. I hope he ended up in his little house and can enjoy some peace and stability for the final chapters of his life.
