In this food travel vlog, I’m in District 1, Saigon, Vietnam, trying some authentic Vietnamese street food. The street food vendor is a friendly Vietnamese auntie who sells the best cơm tấm I’ve ever had!
Cơm Tấm literally translates to broken rice in English. This is a suitable name because the rice grains are “broken” and much smaller than full sized rice grains. This style of rice rose in popularity in the Mekong Delta region of Vietnam, where rice farmers who were struggling a bit financially would sell their full grain rice and use their broken rice to cook and eat at home.
This com tam street vendor uses a very authentic version of broken rice, with tiny broken rice grains which give the rice a delightful and unique texture. She has various toppings to put on the broken rice, and I chose sườn (bbq pork chop), trứng gà (chicken egg), and mỡ hành (pork fat with green onion). The dish was also topped with some pickled veggies and served with a delicious winter melon soup.
We arrived just as the auntie opened her street food stall, so we were able to eat pork chops fresh off the barbecue. The pork chops were excellently marinated and grilled to perfection. The egg was also cooked perfectly, with a crispy fried outside and a runny yolk.
I happily ate this cơm tấm and gave you my signature Dank Rank food review. I also practiced speaking Vietnamese with the lovely auntie, who was very friendly and patient with my efforts.
Overall, this was a really wonderful experience eating some authentic Vietnamese street food in District 1, HCMC. For any foodies traveling to or living in Vietnam, I highly recommend trying this auntie’s com tam. She is located on Cô Giang Street.
The food stall is located around:
31 Cô Giang, Phường Cầu Ông Lãnh, Quận 1, Thành phố Hồ Chí Minh
