Jecker, do you think that US soldiers wanted after fighting for months to keep on going through traps and bunkers that would now down them and their friends? Not everyone is the little snowflake that serves his country and doesn't have any hate towards the enemy. I'm pretty sure that if an enemy culture took you friends or injured them you would be wanting revenge towards one part of them

David not really. the amount of people who die in wars is so small compared to the amount of people who live on the earth I really don't think it would make much if a difference. like say 10 million people die in a war. that's not even 1 percent of 1 percent of the population...
@Asyphinix
@Asyphinix 7 лет назад
If 10 million people died in a war it would have been 0.15% of the worlds population not 0.01%. And if WW3 would happen there would be more civilian deaths than there were in WW2 but less military death deaths as nowadays armies are smaller and more professional and combat has become more fast paced due to technological advancements.

I'm from Afghanistan and live in Toronto and I think every American should read the memoirs of the young American soldiers in Nam. I read them and it broke my heart, most were young kids 18-19 and they were victims too. I am very well aware of the atrocities that occurs in Vietnam and don't want anyone to think the war was anything other than pure sin, but at the same time, if you're American and reading this, remember the brave soldiers of Nam.

@Braxton432 No, France started the war. The conflict effectively began in the late 1800's when France conquered Indochina (now Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia) and the natives had to endure unsatisfactory French rule up to the point where they created the Viet Minh and revolted in the 1940's attempting independence. It was Nixon and Eisenhower that set the U.S. war-bound in the 50's when their French allies left. Kennedy just happened to be elected president just after the U.S. became involved.

@AngusBeaph
@AngusBeaph 7 лет назад
Actually we liberated Iraq from a dictator that ultimately would have done more harm than we ever did. The reason it didn't work out is because the Islamic religion favors self greed in the name of god rather than logical and political morals, this meant that instead of coming together and forming a government, they formed factions that would in the end clash. This meant that after we left them to fix their government, they instead fought between each other and never got anything done. The same type of thing happened in Libya, but instead of us coming in before the revolution we supported the revolution there with airstrikes and aid. The Libyans had fought their war and still couldn't piece back together a functional government. But I hope you understand that in the U.S. Military hierarchy, the only possible way that shooting and killing civilians would never be acceptable, yeah it happens, but the system is there to punish those responsible for the orders or initiative to do so. The troops never harmed civilians in Iraq on purpose, those who did weren't Americans, they were monsters that would later be tried and held accountable for their actions.

There were not many american POW's because they usually killed them after torturing them. Thats why so many are MIA. Both my grandpas served in Vietnam. Both believe that vietnam was a just war. My grandpa on my dads side of the family said he "knew what he possibly would die for. For the freedoms of the south Vietnamese. He was a medic, and treated south Vietnamese freedom fighters and american soldiers. No north Vietnamese though because they kept blowing themselves up with american soldiers after they surrendered. Similar to the Imperial Japanese current day terrorists. Americans were not to execute women or children, since they had no threat after being captured. However, there were countless times when the north vietnamese would strap bombs onto women against their will, and have them running towards the Americans saying "HELP HELP" and when they got close enough, she would detonate. If the women decided to warn the Americans about the bomb, on her, her children would be killed.

Shiquonda Junior Syria? You do know that russia is the main military force there. Theres no americans in syria unless in coordination with russians. As for iraq and afganistan, the americans help train the soldiers there to fight against terrorists. And before that, it was removing the terrorists from power. South vietnamse and north vietnamse South koreans and north koreans Which country is better? Obviously south koreans. XD and guess who stabilized the country? Americans.

I can't see the big scandal about this, the Americans weren't the first to falsely butcher civilians they mistook for Guerillas it happened many times in history. My country Austria massacred serbs by the thousands because they often attacked Royal and Imperial forces and while i pity those poor serbs i still don't think it was that evil i mean most Soldiers where young boys who didn't wanna die and they where paranoid. Same goes for the Americans i don't blame them the Viet Congs where brutal in their warfare. Also the Geneva Convention doesn't apply to Guerillas and Terrorists so technically not illegal.

Operation Linebacker 2 severly crippled North Vietnam. Yes, we did lose a few B52's but the price was worth it. Also at the Paris Peace Accords it was agreed that North Vietnam would stop its advance on the south and the US began a withdrawl of all combat forces. The treaty was meant to bring about peace, and it did for a while until the North Vietnamese went back on their word and started advancing south again.

The vietnamese did do all of the things that Mr. Nicolas said (exempt I'm not too sure about russian roulette?) but those where things done when a lot of americans refused to work in coal mines or gather wood, etc. after the war, a lot of americans where actually released from vietnamese prisons. Our country went in there and destroyed 40+ villages. They had civilians, but a lot of men just didn't care because they needed something to kill to feel like they where winning the war.

We were on patrol one time coming back from a mission and we were diverted to a crash site to find the intell we were looking for and came upon

I'm confused, when the lady talks about what happened to them at the ditch, did the American soldiers do that to them or were the Viet Cong

@pwnzilla93 Wrong, During WW2, only the Viet Minh fought against Japan, while the French were collaborating with them. After WW2 the Viet Minh proclaimed independence, while France tried to get the collony back. So the french started this war with American support. After the battle of Dien ben puh, Vietnam was divided into two spheres, and free elections were promised to the Viet Minh for the whole country. But the USA and South Vietnam prevented the election.

@Finn001abd Late in the day, however, i would disagree with your statement. The Ho Chi Minh trail, was never closed due to American Industrial might, as in carpet bombing and superior airpower. Their bombing strategy was defeated in large part, by the humble bicycle. Kissinger could not believe that Giap and Minh had defeated him.

Only talking about Vietnamese refuges of which there were up to 11 million. Perhaps it is more proper to understand why so many of them are unforgiving than to critisize them. They were not "economic" refuges, they were fleeing for their lives. 100- 200,000 innocent Vietnamese died in "reeducation camps". They were not "economic" refugees.

War is never pretty and on both sides of the line are men who have lives/families. They fight due to a religion or a "government". If people do not learn to live and let live and not force their views war will always be there. I have heard from past wars that [even tho they hate the enemy] they hold some level of respect to them.

@wheelholder12 I don't know,was it right or wrong of us to do what we did? was it right or of them to defend their country? All I know is that the commanding General of the North Vietnamese forces stated that if America had held out a while longer that they were about to surrender.

Blame the soldiers who killed innocent people. They are to blame. A man makes a decision for himself. If he can live with that decision maybe he was right in what he did. I ask you though, how many of the U.S. soldiers were truly proud of what they did in Vietnam? I personally know some of them, & they surely weren't proud & had the hardest time living with what they did, or saw done.

This is real sad. I am an American, and I find the civilian part real sad. I would never do such things to civilians, leave it to shoot at the people shooting at you rather than try to kill unarmed civilians.

No doubt, I was in Germany in 1976-1979 and even then they wanted to talk about it. They were very concerned over how I felt about it. I don't believe most Germans understood what happened in the concentration camps, and felt remorse for having been led into such a nightmare via Hitler.. Hindsite is always 20-20.

@mrthompson878 For the movie "Ishi" look up the actor Graham Greene " the last of his tribe" is the actual name, sorry about that, the character is called Ishi, and it was an actual case. the hunt for indians in california is just under any search for CA history, the same happened in new mexico and arizona. Since when has education been an indicative of morality and peace? Sin lurks in all of our hearts, regardless of schooling, intelligence, or who are parents are.

Why are you even arguing with me right now? I never said that I approved of the US involvement in Vietnam. All I said was that tactically, from a military stand point, the US had substantial victories in the Vietnam War. That statement is a fact, look it up.

Diem was a despot (no doubt) and divided South Vietnam even further and created much opposition from Bhuddists. However, I do not remember any South Vietnamese political parties calling for the north to interviene.. Diem was assassinated in Nov of 1963 and things rapidly changed for the better in South Vietnam. That did not give North Vietnam the right to attack the south. But it did give the north reason to think they could do so and win a quick victory. (beginning of Vietnam war Pt II).
