In this video, I interview a young Vietnamese woman named Trang about her job and the dynamics of modern work culture in Vietnam.
Trang is currently a full time English teacher in Vietnam. In the past she has worked as a journalist and as a Vietnamese to English interpreter.
I had a really interesting discussion with Trang not only about her job and career path, but also about the job market in general in Vietnam. She gave some great insights into the most marketable skills in today’s working culture, as well as some of the biggest challenges that Vietnamese people face in the job market today.
Thanks for watching! I hope you enjoyed this interview.

Your English is extremely good for someone who learned English in Vietnam. Very Impressive 👏

Trang is absolutely right. Having a specific skill gets you the job, but being a fast learner (or adaptable) is what sustains you and keeps you at the job and allows you to grow. Best content yet, I love how Trang is so authentic and honest in her answers. She is not sugar coating, just so real. Love you Trang !

Trang’s English is so much better than many Viet Kieu I know who have been in the US for 10-30 years!
@eddietran6260
@eddietran6260 4 месяца назад
True. However, it's Trang's young age, her high intelligence, and her eagerness and willingness to learn and improve. Many Viet Kieu came to the US at the age or 20 or older, some 30s, and they had to raise a family in a strange land, so learning a new language fluently is not a priority. My mom came here when she was 38 and worked in a Chinese restaurant for 3 decades, and now she is 76, her English is still very broken LOL.

Whilst her English is definitely good [and helps she dated a foreigner] I can't help thinking she does need to toughen up a bit. A 40 hour work week is the minimum people starting jobs should expect, and especially in Vietnam where it is often spread over a six day work week instead of five days means it's often only 7 hours of actual work a day or less. Quitting a job after a year because of pressure then quitting the next one after four months shows a lack of mental toughness. When everyone starts out in your career you grind to get experience, rather than just quitting jobs left and right.

Teaching English is a tough job with a higher burnout rate than other jobs. In addition to the teaching hours there are many hours (usually unpaid) spent doing lesson planning work. I’m sure that she was working more than 40 hours a week and at 23 its fine to try a variety of jobs while trying to figure out the right fit……

The most popular job that foreigners get here is teaching English, other than that the job market for Americans is somewhat limited. There are a good amount of people who work online doing various digital jobs, and some who work for businesses. Another option for Americans would be to start their own business here. A restaurant or a bar are the first things that come to mind.

What recession? Is Vietnam in an economic recession now? We here in America are always hearing that Vietnam is becoming the next China, because many Western manufacturing companies are moving from China to Vietnam. They are always talking about Vietnam, India, and Mexico are the countries benefiting from corporations moving away from China.
@BigTimeBentley
@BigTimeBentley 4 месяца назад
The real estate market, and the fact that people aren’t really buying here and prices are going down is an indicator of a recession going on here. Prices of every day items have increased. Wages are stagnant. Unemployment is up. It may not be as severe here as it is in America but it’s still noticeable. But yea I’ve heard the same things about manufacturing moving from China to Vietnam though I think that started a few years ago so maybe the positive benefits of that are less noticeable today than they were previously.

@@BigTimeBentleyBelieve it or not, the economy is good right now, here in America. The stock markets had just recently broke the all time high record and un-employment % is very low. There are some good things that comes with inflation too. Higher wages is one of the good things that comes from inflation. I recently saw a sign that said "For Hire $20/hour" at the In N Out Burgers restaurant. Can you believe that a high school drop out, 16 years old kid can make $20/hour flipping burgers?
