Vietnamese Life in Cambodia. Tonle Sap's Floating Village. A Kyle Le documentary

a Kyle Le doc.
There are millions of Vietnamese people outside of Vietnam. There are thousands of Vietnamese people living on Tonle Sap Lake in Cambodia, not too far away from the city of Siem Reap. Every day thousands of tourists from all over the world take tours on this lake without knowing the truth behind these floating homes. They are taken to the floating market where they are guilt tripped into buying inflated bags of rice, noodles, or candy and thinking they are doing a good deed. But the fact is, these markets and nearby school leaders are in on a big scam at the children's expenses. The less touristy and smaller Catholic School doesn't appear to be a part of this bait and switch situation because they are the ones petitioning and talking about it. But who can you really trust out here? I'll let you decide for yourself. For more on these people please read my website at: www.kylele.net/2015/11/20/the-...

+Quang Tran tourism is okay as long as it brings something to the locals, like jobs or aid, but this is really not the case
@mikemike8014
@mikemike8014 7 лет назад
Tourism does bring something to the locals. Really need some education beyond middle school to properly take advantage of it though. Does it reach everyone, surely not and never will. The entire town of Siem Reap near the lake is built off of tourism. Thousands and thousands of Cambodians make their living off of tourism, it's the 3rd largest industry in the country after garment factories and agriculture. The tourism boom also drives up the price of land, goods, and services. There are lots of winners and lots of losers. Many people make a decent living from tourism. The standard of living has dramatically increased since tourists started coming in large numbers.

Be sure to give this video a thumbs up and share it with your friends. We might not be able to change their lives, but we can definitely raise awareness for anyone visiting Siem Reap or Cambodia as a whole. Thanks. Kyle.

this should teach you to do better and make a better life so you can help them some way if only you can. this should motivate you to be better and stronger and make you think when you struggle or do things stressful, but you will back to this moment and think that they have it way more struggle than you so you should push yourself even harder than you ever dis in your life.

As a Cambodian, I remember going here for the first time and being all giddy. I went back the next time and I asked the locals to take me to the Vietnamese section because I wanted to see how they were living and I was told I couldn’t go there. I remember asking the rice dealers why everything was so expensive and why the community was still so poor despite the expensive rice. It’s so obvious about the amount of corruption. I get that Vietnam and Cambodia has a history and it’s hurtful but I just wish we could put that away. The hell for Vietnamese in Cambodia, the hell for Cambodians in Vietnam meanwhile our politicians are secretly benefiting off each other and it pisses me off

Cambodia is a poor country. Everyone is suffering. Cambodian, Viets, etc. The system is corrupt. It really bothers me when the kid doesn't want to learn Cambodian and they live in Cambodia. I hope the Vietnamese living in Cambodia respects the country and contributes to the culture while still maintaining their roots. There are Cambodian living in Cambodia that are poorer than Viets. Again, everyone is suffering.

I remember the catholic school there. Since we are Vietnamese, we talked to one of the instructors (he was from Tay Ninh) and some of the kids playing on the floor. It was a weekend morning so no classes were in session but it was great to talk to them. No one solicited money from us, we were just hanging out and chatting. The rice bag/food scam must have started rather recently as our trip five years ago did not include any mandatory stops to any of those places.

Hi Kyle, thanks for allowing some of us to see this early. As a student of anthropology, I consider this to be a great example of ethnographic film (which basically means it captures the day to day experiences of a particular group of people) and I think you should definitely consider making more short films in this style, in Cambodia, Vietnam or wherever. Last year I travelled to Cambodia and spent some time in Kompong Phluk, a floating village also located near Tonle Sap lake. Just as you said in this video, the local people suffering from poverty were completely invisible to tourists. Sad to say that it wasn't surprising to me that the ethnic Vietnamese here are being exploited and neglected by cultural tourism. Check out the film Cannibal Tours by Dennis O'Rourke, it's about the local people in remote areas of Papua New Guinea being similarly exploited by Western tourists, and I think it has parallels with what you experienced.

I worked in early 90's for UNTAC in Battambang and Siem Reap and that experience profoundly changed my outlook on life. It's very sad to see that in the last 25 years not much has changed.

A couple of years ago my mom went to Cambodia to visit, and her bf who's Cambodian took them to Tonle Sap Lake. They got in the shop and my mom saw something she liked so she asked her bf to ask what the price was. He spoke in Khmer and they didn't reply. They started speaking VNese between them and my mom was so surprised. She had no idea that our people were stuck there. So she spent a good amount of time talking to them and everything you said is true. From the Cambodian government not recognizing them, oppressing them and the fake warehouse shops taking money. They are too poor to go back to VN, and they don't even have VN papers. They've tried many times to set foot on land and build there but apparently they get "đánh một cái" and sent back to the waters. Just like you said there's some that have never seen VN and will probably go out of this life without doing so. Oh yeah, apparently the local VN kids always get around in this metallic "chậu" and they know how to paddle whereas if we tried it ourselves we'd be spinning in one place haha. My mom and her bf ended up giving away all their cash that they carried on that day. I've been wanting to spread the cause after hearing the stories but I want to see it with my own eyes first. Thank you for showing us that.
