Typhoon Yagi, Asia's most powerful storm this year, left dozens dead in northern Vietnam and widespread damage to infrastructure and factories as it churned westwards, preliminary government estimates showed on Monday (September 9).
Among the affected is 45-year-old restaurant owner and mother Nguyen Thi Thom, who after COVID invested in renovating her restaurant to welcome tourists with money she borrowed from friends and relatives.
Typhoon Yagi has destroyed her two-storey eatery, which is also living quarters for her and her two daughters.
A week before the typhoon struck, she bought audio and video equipment and lighting to organize events that cost around $120,000 USD. Now everything is destroyed.
"I have lost everything. There is nothing left," she said. "I did not want to cry but I could not help it because it hurts so much."
Yagi made landfall on Sunday (September 8), cut power to millions of households and companies, flooded highways, disrupted telecommunications networks, downed a medium-sized bridge and thousands of trees, and brought economic activity in many industrial hubs to a halt.
Forty-six people have died and 22 are missing, mostly because of landslides and floods triggered by the typhoon, Vietnam's disaster management agency said.
