Inferi's Vile Genesis is one of my favorites this year, but the new Obscura, Archspire, Dream Theater, and First Fragment albums are also awesome.

When you've finished headbanging, have a listen to *King Buffalo* - Acheron. Really good prolific band.

Saw Unto Others on their US tour. Such a great live band. One of my favorite albums this year for sure

That DVNE album is fucking great.

I was hoping for Dream Theater even if Blayne would not be into even less than Spiritbox, but I am glad to see Worm get some love.

For albums not mentioned, I'd definitely recommend Forhist for any atmospheric black metal fans!

Gloire Éternelle by First Fragment definitely deserves a full review

I'm really digging the new Khemmis album. It's like Black Sabbath decided to put out an album after listening to some melo death. Right up my alley! other than that, Dvne, Wheel, Atvm and Steel Bearing Hand (thanks Blayne on metal monthly) were among my faves that didnt get covered. well, Dvne did.

Not sure if Fossilization 'He Whose name was long forgotten" made it to a metal monthly, but if you want death/doom that stays perfectly in that sweet spot...absolutely crushing record, love it.

Just to throw this out there: I’d love to see Blayne Smith review a Type O Negative album. Martin Popoff already did “World Coming Down,” so that leaves a lot of room for Blayne! :P

The Be’lakor album was my favorite album this year by far...and I bought a ton of music.

Just found a killer album by Dissiderium, Aria is pretty awesome!

I checked out "Unto Others" and the vocals are strikingly similar to a band we know everyone likes. Keldian!

Aggregated and voted lits are usually pretty safe, and this is again. Some very good stuff, such as Worm, Archspire, but I really wish it had been the opportunity to also highlight gems that went unnoticed for some reason. Such as the very best and most singular album of the year by lightyears: CREATURE - Eloge De L' Ombre Fucking incredible and different release, really never heard anything like it. Hard to describe, but some kind of otherworldly black metal that goes into a lot of other territories. Epic, emotional, and just plain awesome. Miss only if you're a fool!

Some of my favs not listed were Apogean, Vulvodynia, Supreme conception, BAEST, & Fractal Generator

I love how Blayne doesn't hide his personal preferences but still reviews stuff somewhat objectively. I used to love Be'lakor, but this one fell a bit flat to me. Archspire I loved, but I am really not into much tech-death these days. I think they are holding the torch for a genre that seems to be fading from people's minds. I think their super unique-to-the-genre vocals keep it a bit interesting and they don't lose track of the songs for the tech like many other bands. But the Worm album....mmmmm

My #1 album of the year is Phantom Elite's Titanium. Album shows a lot of growth from the previous. An amazing album and I feel a lot of people missed it. If you like female fronted symphonic metal check them out. It's a beautiful album and Marina LA Torraca vocals are stellar. Archspire Golden Mouth of Ruin is my number 2.

Be’Lakor is a year ender for me. Spiritbox is a perfect example of what excellent PR is, because I agree, not that special. But the one year of hype behind it has critics going all gaga for it. One album that could’ve been on here was Ward of Roses by The Silver. People, please don’t sleep on this one! And if you need any outside endorsements for it, it was number 13 on Decibel Magazine’s year-end list.

Spiritbox basically sounds like what I consider modern mainstream metal (whatever that means) to be.... And it's not very interesting.

I don’t know much about Spiritbox but I feel bad for the band and the people who voted it number two for not getting a real review

Mortifera - V: Ecclesiae Mortii Thy Light - with EP title Thy Light ( OMG the legendary DSBM band is back) Check out band Decalius everyone...eventhough this band is new , most of the release already consider modern classic for DSBM genre. In Mourning - The Bleeding Veil ( I don't listen to melo death but melo death with progressive element , I'm in ) SLAM !!! Do I need to say add anything anymore ? Waking the Cadaver - Authority Through Intimidation Abominable Putridity - Parasitic Metamorphosis Manifestation In love with metal since 2015...Much love from Malaysian Headbanger. Man oh man, that Be'lakor album was a CONSTANT listen for me this year. Amazing stuff from them. They've become my favorite melodic death metal group. I can see how people don't love them, but I love that "depressive layer."

Definitely more metal-adjacent but I really loved ULTRAPOP by The Armed, its so noisy and unrelenting and All Futures is an amazing song

Be'lakor is one of my favorite melodeath/progdeath bands but yeah... this new one is the first album I couldn't make it through. Havnt even heard the last 3 songs and don't plan on it.

I agree with Blayne on the Celine Dion metal band. I listen to a lot of Liquid Metal and they play a lot of it.

The problem with Be'lakor is that Vessels was so damn good. Coherence has to stand up against it. For melodic death, Insomnium's Argent Moon is my favorite.

If ever a review segment needed a tag-team approach, it would be this one (like it's been in the past?). Hilarious as it is to see Blayne squirm, it would be much more rewarding, and funnier, for him to be able to be completely subjective and have his opinion contrasted by someone who actually listens to more progressive and melodic music, like Dylan. If the second person can't show up physically, then via video would also work. From someone who actually enjoys the Worm, Spiritbox and Archspire albums in about equal measure (but would have different picks for my top 5), seeing the patreons' picks treated in this slightly dismissive manner actually kind of discouraged me from becoming one.

The new Archspire is the album that finally hit me in just the right way. Sorry I was so late to the party on this band.

Papangu - Holoceno is one os the best metal albums in recente years, and nobody is talking about it.

Blayne if you dig the Idle Hands/Unto Others stuff, you should check out The Cult Sounds out of St. Louis. They manage to blend like The Damned and late 90’s AFI punk with gothic Bauhaus and Sisters of Mercy and have some serious doom influences via Black Sabbath and Type O. There’s even a weird Black Metal section in one of the tracks off their new record.

Unto Others are such a good band. Sucks that they cannot be called Idle Hands. I saw them on the King Diamond tour and they kicked ass. Get me to the night is such a bitching song. Glad you talked about this album
