Owners have a responsibility to their pets to keep them safe, and a responsibility to drivers to make sure their animals aren't going to cause an accident that could get someone killed. No matter how well trained your dog is, you can't ever have 100% confidence they aren't going to do something unexpected at the worst moment
As a dog lover, nothing irks me more than seeing people walk near roads with their dog off the lead. On a busy a-road roundabout yesterday and some wally with his dog off the lead were trying to cross. I don’t care if they’re disciplined, anything could spook them at any time.
Given the two toddlers facing the road on their scooters, I would like to think that I would have been slowing anyway, regardless as to whether the dog was visible.
These compilations shows how repectful this community is, that Ashley has developed. We can admit safely here we are not perfect, willing to learn together and so fellow drivers say to Ashley, "Here, help me and others learn from this". I still say to myself at congested junctions "It's nice to be nice."
I was the driver in the second clip. A long and tiring day at work had afflicted my judgement slightly, at a distance it looked like the lorry was going to complete the overtake. I eased off the accelerator but really should have braked earlier - but I still reacted way too slowly. I always treat this stretch with more caution now.
The extra weight, the longer wheelbase and I think it's RWD, they all help in that situation. There's more momentum to spin, and through a longer distance and you'll feel the rear wheels twitching earlier than FWD. Not taking away from the talent, but it's just more stable a bus
100% You have to expect the unexpected and assume that the kid is going to step out, which the cammer didn’t seem to do. Tbf they acknowledged they were going a smidge too fast and 9 times out of 10, that dog gets flattened so we can’t be too critical. A- is completely fair
Couldn't agree more. The emergency stop to avoid the dog was almost entirely a result of the fact that they completely failed to manage their speed and road position for the *obvious* pedestrian risks. Is it normal now for people to blitz past pedestrians at or in excess of the speed limit? These must be the same people that think you pass cyclists with a 30cm gap...
I started getting recommendations for your channel a couple of days ago, thinking it was another dashcam compilation channel, just like the rest. However, I was quickly impressed with your effective commentary that informs viewers how to be better drivers. Your channel is an excellent learning resource you should be proud to run.
Certain dashcam channels have a good few examples of making an incident out of nothing and in some cases actually causing the cammer more delay than if they'd jus eased off the accelerator a bit instead of laying on the horn and then braking at the last minute. There is one clip with a cammer I've seen that a lorry pulls out plenty distance in front all the cammer needed to do was back off the accelerator a tiny bit but nope horned and braked las minute to a complete stop giving a second lorry a chance to pull out and then got made at the second lorry too, lol.
The last clip should have been graded like figure skating, with a numerical score, rather than a A-F mark 😂 But, seriously, these videos and Ashley's commentary do make me think about my own driving.
Most drivers see a limit as a target and take no account for conditions whatsoever, also instructors actively encourage/coerce learners to get up to the limit in all conditions and even with traffic ahead and/or red lights with no thought whatsoever. Even Neal here is stating that the driver in the first clip is "slow" and "doesn't get on with it" the Tesla driver is already beyond the speed limit by looks of things when they get into Lane 2, then Neal gives the 'slow' black Merc driver a D, same as the impatient/speeding Tesla driver. I mean WTF! It's pretty disturbing that this is the normal approach to hazard perception and speed tbh
9:18 another thing to note. Notice how long the car was sliding for even after they lost a lot of their momentum. It really shows how little grip you can have on icy roads and how wary you have to be. Winter tyres would also massively help in situations like that.
They applied their brakes. If you hit black ice, feather the throttle, don't turn the steering wheel and keep off the brakes. That way, if there is any grip, you can make use of it. To do this requires practice so get yourself some tuition on a skid pan.
@@johnrussell5245 in a front drive car, don't let too much off the throttle. basic rule I tell people, now, is "drive the front end where you want to go and don't let the back end pass you." in a front drive car, that sometimes means not stepping off, or it can spin you. with the old rear drives, stepping off would increase drag, and help straighten you.
Winter tyres help a lot in most conditions, but there is nothing you can buy in the UK that will help you on ice. For that you ideally need studded nordic tyres (which are amazing on ice), or studless nordic winter tyres (which are OK, but are definitely not guaranteed to save you at these speeds). Unfortunately studded tyres are illegal in the UK, and full nordic winters are just not suitable for most of the UK winter.
My personal opinion is that even the best drivers make mistakes - they can be distracted by someone else in the car, or the sun shines in their eyes for a second, or they catch sight of a special offer at the local supermarket! We all do it - but it is how we react when something happens at that time of distraction. I see too many dashcam videos where the drivers go faster towards the problem while leaning on the car horn - and then blaming everyone else when they crash... Drive safely and don't drive angry!
5:05 whilst the awareness and reaction of the driver was good. In a high risk situation like this, especially with young children close to the edge of the pavement. I always err on the side of caution. 20-25mph allows you more time to react and stop, should something unexpected happen. Then once you have passed the hazard you can increase your speed again.
Regarding the last one, in my experience, I'm afraid those biscuit tins tend to have awful road-holding, and they also tend to be fitted with Ditch-Finder General tyres. I know black ice is a leveller, but it's always good to buy the best-performing car and tyres you can afford. If the car gets shaky in the wet, it'll do a whole lot worse in winter.
Great stuff ash, that last clip was great with the collaboration from the house cameras. It’s easy to be confident in icy weather but it’s always best to play it safe.
Driving in icy conditions is better taught when you're behind the wheel than on a computer screen. To feel that loss of control, to have your heart skip a beat. It's frightening. It was on my 3rd lesson back in late January 2019 when i skidded my instructors car into a kerb because i turned too sharply not wanting to cut a corner. I was only doing crawling speed. I can tell you now it opened my eyes, and my instructor at the time explained about when it's okay to cut corners as long as you check it's safe. Also about driving to the conditions and slowing down earlier. I'm not saying instructors need to have their cars skidding for lesson purposes but a lot of instructors out there don't teach about winter conditions. It could save a life.
That last clip reminds me of one trip back from work at around 1130pm. Most of the driving was on the motorway and dual carriageway but the last 6 miles were on standard roads. This particular night was a chilly one but I didn’t think it was that cold, the outside temperature was reading 3 degrees celcius and the roads felt fine while driving. I was following a car in front of me and after a couple of miles the trees that line the side of the road cleared meaning the road surface was no longer protected from the elements. The next corner is when it all happened… The car in front pirouetted around the corner in a nice 720 degree spin…I tried to slow down but all 4 wheels locked up. With no ABS I was pumping the brakes while steering and somehow we avoided each other. We both stopped, had a quick chat which helped some adrenaline drop and the heart rate reduce and then carried on our journey at slower speeds. The moral of the story…black ice can appear anywhere and if it is a little chilly or below 4 degrees (I think that is the standard point when the frost light appears on most cars now) drive more carefully on untreated roads 👍 Take care out there everyone and keep a blanket, food and drink in the car in case you get stranded in the cold weather
We always think of zero degrees as being the freezing point of water, but remembering back to my science lessons at school, water starts to freeze at 4 degrees. This is why cars warn from there downwards. Think of your fridge. It is usually around 4-5 degrees inside, but still produces frost.
@@nigelcox1451 Indeed it does and also the temperature in the car is the air temperature not the ground temperature which can be colder. Most people think the warning is for the mornings to warn there could still be ice outside but as you say, it is also a warning to say ice could be forming / already formed 👍
I had a bike ride like that, forecast was 5 degrees and sunny. As soon as I started down a country road in a valley the bike slipped out from under me in an instant. I tried twice more and then gave up and walked a mile to the nearest main road that had been gritted.
my own relatable experience was a bit more intense. I was driving a Jeep to go skiing, and as fate would have it, I was the next car through after the zamboni. on cresting the hill, the rear end came loose, and there was nothing I could do to keep it in line and shed speed at the same time. ended up using the berm to slow, and then had to chain up, and quite literally turn at 90 degrees to the road to get it away from the berm. the ice on the road was so polished, I had to hold to the jeep to keep from sliding away while I was working.
What I found weird in Uk than many cars attemt to merge motorway just around 30mph and do not accelerate properly, it's weird as I found lorries merge faster 😂
OC Tesla driver here. Yes, I emphasised in my email that white VW's driving was excellent and he held back for a while until he was sure that my knobbery had finished.
It's good to note that the Transit's brake lights flashing in the last clip is an indication that the ABS is intervening, and is common on most newish vehicles. It's to show following vehicles that the driver is braking very hard (in dry conditions), or that (like in this case) that the conditions are slippy enough that the vehicle would be skidding if it didn't have ABS.
Had personal experience of the black ice one many years ago at the A591 to A590 roundabout near Kendal. I saw the car ahead wiggle as it approached the roundabout and the driver applied the brakes. I hadn't been driving long so I was being cautious and hanging back a bit and that probably saved me. I had a longer distance to brake and negotiated the problem safely. An older more confident and faster me might not have had as much time to react but it taught me a valuable lesson about observation, and luck. It wasn't really my driving skills that helped. More the lack of them.
Talk about beginner's luck! There's a dangerous gap between being a novice driver and being really experienced. Car control skills develop much faster than observation / anticipation / hazard perception skills. This is the most dangerous period in every driver's "career".
Shout out to Kendal! Nice to hear from my home town. My dad lives near Kendal and only buys cars/SUVs with all-wheel drive capability (currently has a Suzuki Vitara) and will fit winter tyres soon as it starts to get cold. It pays to be prepared round the Lake District!

Pitching in from a scandinavian perspective, on a sheet of ice the only real chance you have is if you have studded winter tyres fitted. I have studless nordic winters, which are the next best thing (and indescribably better than summer tyres on ice), but at 45-50mph i'd be seriously short on grip on that black ice also. If you do find yourself hitting such conditions the best option is to steer as straight as you can and not hit the brakes like the van driver did. Honestly, i think he was very lucky not to take the "scenic route" also.
It's certain excessive speed was a big factor with the icy road crash. It's hard to say exactly how fast they were going. But they were definitely hitting 40 😂
He's one of those motorists that if he got hit he'd be baffled by it, no common sense at all, the sign for the right turn is hidden up on the wall behind the grass
Notice the red coloring in the centre-line hatching too - typically only installed where there is a history of "overtaking through junction" accidents....
I think a lot of drivers don't really 'see' cyclists - I mean, he passed him, but did he understand that he was overtaking, or was it no different to avoiding a pothole?

Most of those speed limits are 30mph but people get impatient with me even when I'm driving 35mph and the road isn't fully plowed. I will keep your comment in mind and will try to remember that they are welcome to pass me if they want to drive faster!

It was really so that the cyclist was aware the lorry could swing across, they couldn't see what was on the other side of the road from their perspective.
I really appreciate the viewer who sent in the clip at 5:51, I'd be almost fixated on the kid who looked poised and ready to go across the road (even though he was looking). The fact that the cammer managed to assess that and then take evasive action for the dog is really impressive, nicely done.
I’d argue, like others, that they didn’t assess the kid. You shouldn’t be driving past a kid on a scooter who’s just partially rolled out into the road at 31mph. Moving out a couple of feet isn’t enough for me.
@@Batters56 Yeah that's a good point. I think it lends itself to Ashley's point of fixating on one thing, something which I've been guilty of in the past.
They can't have been that fixated on the kids (not to mention all the side roads and other pedestrians) if they think that 30+mph is an acceptable speed in that scenario. Thankfully not a pedestrian fatality (or canine either :) ) but the driver created and/or allowed all of that risk to develop! Cannot believe that Ashley and commenters here are oblivious to this...
That last one is a great example of how quickly life can become a right Faff! Also if the road looks like it might be bad, don't drive that day if you don't NEED to!
For 2 seconds I was perplexed as to how the cyclist was at fault, when I assessed the lorry driver could see far ahead and remained behind the cyclist till it was safe to overtake. Also, the only option for the cyclist was to fall into a ditch. But as i said ,I assessed that for 2 seconds when you let it known it was only a joke. A+ for that. 😅
One thing I picked up on since passing my test almost 2 years ago is read the behaviour of the driver ahead as they can see potential hazards before me. The last clip illustrates this point
Another clue for ice is to listen for changes in road noise, on a bike this is easier, slow down and crack open the visor, if things go quiet the challenge is not to tense up as that can make things worse.
The last clip, I knew that the van driver was trying to warn any following vehicles of the road conditions. Not actually apply the brakes. The cam car was going too fast and obviously didn't understand the brake light warning, so paid the price! As they say 'drive to the conditions'.
Rule 129 Double white lines where the line nearer to you is solid. This means you MUST NOT cross or straddle it unless it is safe and you need to enter adjoining premises or a side road. You may cross the line if necessary, provided the road is clear, to pass a stationary vehicle, or overtake a pedal cycle, horse or road maintenance vehicle, if they are travelling at 10 mph (16 km/h) or less. Laws RTA 1988 sect 36 & TSRGD schedule 9 part 8 I would be surprised if the cyclist was going slower than 10 m.p.h.
The reaction was to immediately pull to the right to miss the dog. Sometimes a bad move despite being a natural reaction. Miss dog, hit oncoming vehicle. Should a default be "don't swerve for small animals?"
@@amazer747 I am with you on that. It's very sad for the animal, but I'm not killing someone for a dog/cat/fox. Pony and larger gets avoided if at all possible simply because hitting one can kill you. Mostly though, avoid driving quickly past animals. It's the sudden unseen charge into the road that is the real problem.
@@amazer747In theory, you're supposed to do exactly that; not swerve for small animals when the situation could become worse, i.e; hitting something else. In practice, however, reactions are often faster than thought, due to, ironically, survival instincts.
8:11, you can hear the driver engrossed in a full conversation, you can hear a passenger in the car and you can hear kids in the car as well. Was the driver talking on the phone?, or was he talking to the passenger?, either way loads of distractions going on taking attention away from the road.
The thing with black ice is it’s like wet glass…once you lose grip, the vehicle just keeps on sliding, even if slowly. Kinda like being in space! ……I drove a Kangoo delivery van for ten years…in winter it had the grip of blancmange. It taught me a lot of respect for ice. One ungritted rural left turn I took at just ten mph with a gentle, wide steer (cos I could see the black patch)...it STILL broke free and slid gracefully into a small roadside bush. No harm done, but that feeling of gliding with zero friction or control puts butterflies in your stomach. Another time I found myself on ice so slippery no amount of precise clutch control could keep the van moving…Literally the power required to move at all was more than the wheels could transmit to the ice…and I was seven miles out into the countryside. I managed to get the van partially onto the snow covered verge and was able to gently reverse to a slightly more grippy surface and backtrack to a gritted road. Nice video compilation well narrated.

Black ice is fun at any speed... Like me having stopped at a rural exit, just to be looking back at where I came from after accelerating out onto the main road... No speed, but I still made a 180
Hi Ashley. Your videos helped me learn to drive 5 years ago. I drive in and around London and your tips have helped me navigate and preempt many scenarios that could have been close calls or worse, especially in cases like these. I wanted to say thank you for all you do making our roads safer.
Dogs should always be on a lead near any road, just too much of a risk for them not to be. Final clip the van is larger and heavier so "probably" had better grip than the smaller lighter car, however still slow down. I have fishtailed at low speed coming out at an icy junction which involved some choice words and a change of trousers, it happened so quickly and easily.
I would have mentioned the right turn sign on the cyclist overtake clip. The brake lights flashing is a recent safety feature only implemented less than 10 years ago so not all vehicles would have this
With regards to the last one. Id highly recommend not skimping on tyres and always go for at least a set of all seasons tyres. They make a massive difference in icy/snowy/wet conditions. And unless you're running track days in the summer months then they have more than enough grip/handling for summer weather too.
All season rubber make bugger all difference on ice, driving slower is the easier option in less than optimal conditions but most won't. And driving instrcutors insist learners get up to the limit as if it is a target, utter madness.
That blue car making the u-turn didn't even need to be signalling for me to know, it became apparent very early on from their position that they weren't turning left! I had two drivers in 100 yards u-turn infront of me from the oncoming lane without signalling, there is ALWAYS a clue, as astonished as I was at two unrelated u-turns in such a short distance, there is just soething about the position and angle of attack that gives you a clue if you are really paying attention!
2:00 was a great clip Ashley, because it really caught me out! Yes, because you said its the cyclists fault, and they get a K. 😂😂😂😂 Great joke for Cycling Twitter! 🤣🤣🤣🤣. I do think the last clip was pretty scary though with that black ice risk. It's something I'll be needing to be ready for in my new car, and even though I've got AWD for better traction, its still not going to be 100% safe. I think it's a great learning point.
The silver car that overtakes the cyclist only to immediately slow right down to turn right is another driver who does not consider passing a cyclist to be an overtake. They would not pass a motor vehicle in that position, even if it was going slower than the cyclist was. They would consider that stupid just like everyone else. "Why would I overtake just to immediately slow and turn?" They pass the cyclist because passing cycles is what they always do with no thought for what they are about to do next or even whether there is oncoming traffic. In their mind they're not doing an overtake, they're just steering.
I think you’ve been tad harsh on this one, Ash, or maybe I’m particularly lenient today. I don’t know. I think that the Tesla was graded one too low. It wasn’t ideal the situation they’d found themselves in and if they dropped behind the lorry it would’ve been such a nonissue that grading wouldn’t have even been possible but in the situation they were in it was bleak. They used the tools they had, namely power to get out of it. Not ideal but it worked. I’d say C for them. The other one is with the blue car doing that U-turn. Again, passing like that isn’t ideal and there were signs to look for but even then it’s such an unexpected thing for the blue car to do presumably without looking that the fact that a crash was avoided is to be noted. I do agree with your assessment, I just think it should be a C rather than a D.
And if the Mercedes had decided to pull out at the moment the Tesla overtook? The sensible thing was to not overtake the car approaching the end of the slip road.
Sometimes living in places that live near 0c and have stuff like freezing fog and heavy frost is the worst for surprise ice. I’d rather drive on dry, packed snow any day. Black ice is definitely a real thing and while more rare than I think people say it is, when you hit it, it’s supremely dangerous and sketchy. I’ve hit it in Washington state a couple times from freezing fog and last winter during the huge Blizzard in Minnesota, it was so cold that in the twin cities, exhaust had frozen to the freeway and had formed huge swaths of it. Even with proper winter tires and AWD it was super slick, totally invisible, and I had to be extremely cautious.
Red car is so easily done when conditions are perhaps predictable, but then they happen all of a sudden. I got caught in my car in a severe rainstorm a few years back. Lots of cars being silly, dropping to 20 / 30 miles an hour on the motorway and vehicles jumping lanes all the time. I moved to the outside, picked up a bit of speed... and promptly felt my front tyres aquaplane at about 50mph, I slowed, corrected, and slightly touched the accelerator and it did it again. Fortunately reducing speed just brought them back under control and at the next services I just got off rather than risk taking part in any of the competitive driving taking place.
Im surprised Ashley you didnt mention the close proximty of the children to the curb, at the bus stop , with scooters...@ 5.00minutes...It might have been prudent to have took some speed off for them alone...
I made the same mistake at 6:10. Comes from focusing too much on the cyclist and forgetting about the other hazards. Neatly dealt with by the driver. Not convinced the silver car did anything wrong other than misleading the following driver.
First Mercedes should get an F. Slowing down on a slip road is so dangerous, and I have been rear ended because of people like that Mercedes in front of me. Now I always keep an eye on the hard shoulder and escape routes instead of sticking to the "slow down and stop if necessary" advice. I hate being such a paranoid driver because of people like that Mercedes.
That first clip with the Tesla / Merc - perhaps the driver of the truck should have moved into lane 2 but as the video progresses it looked like he had nowhere to go because of the white VW. I will admit that I hate being behind cars that don't try & get up to speed before entering a dual or motorway even if the lane they are going into is clear...
Can't believe the driver was given an A- for doing 30mph past those pedestrians at 5:00 . I'm sure I would've been down to 20 ish if I couldn't move offside. Far too fast to be passing pedestrians, with that separation, I think.
5. Overtaking when driving or cycling. You may cross a double-white line if necessary (provided the road is clear) to overtake someone cycling or riding a horse if they are travelling at 10 mph or less (Rule 129).29 Jan 2022. So with this rule, it seems to me the lorry shouldn't have overtaken until the oncoming traffic was clear.
What i have noticed is lots of people on the road here like to "teach people a lesson" and "voice their opinion" in different ways rather than fall in line and drive safely/to road conditions/ defensively. They will speed past you beeping to "tell you off" just because u made a mistakke/ slowed down too much as u may have almost missed your turning escalating the matter, but they still do it as they feel its "within their right" because u made the mistake. Quintessential british culture i reckon.
Final clip gets a 4.9 out of 6 as it was an incomplete 720 degree pirouette 😂😂😂 Joking aside, a timely clip as the weather is definitely turning cold and black ice is a real danger. Unlike other channels; these get a proper analysis and the people submitting the clips are honest enough to admit to their errors.

The white van managed it tho, cammer was carrying too much speed. Far too many people don't adjust their speed to match the conditions, just carry on regardless as if it's a dry, warm day.
That lorry overtaking the cyclist happened at my first driving test and they did it on a corner and i failed my driving test for that. tbf though the driving instructor said it wasnt my fault at all, quite a scary experience.
Car vertical sponsoring your channel is a really good fit for your channel , to obviously raise awareness of a cars backgrounds , interestingly a vw golf with damage I guess isn't unusual especially as the way I see German cars being driven like bumper cars or by boy racers.,, so quite apt really you had one on your channel with damage, ironically enough your own golf you had must have been the best kept,most well driven golf in the country 😂
That last one is also a reminder to have a decent set of tyres on your car. Get some all season premium tyres on you like some hankooks or Michelins not some Chinese ditch finders.
I thought the dog one was great. As I always start by saying I can no longer drive since developing epilepsy. And when I could tended to drive a little slowly but not sure my reactions eould have been that good. Albeit I did have a real-life emergency stop on my test. That was fun 😮.
Being that I only passed my driving test on the first of September this year I am quite nervous for this winter to come cos I don't know what precautions to take in terms of things to actually do to my car and how to change how I drive. I tried finding some youtube videos but none of them helped settle my nerves especially cos I know how bad my area can get with ice/black ice
Get winter tires. They really help, but also do not think they are a magical fix and get overconfident. Overall just drive slower and keep more space. Try to drive in such a way that you do not need to use your brakes before going into a bend in the road and when coming up on a junction get off the gas way early and give yourself plenty of time to slow down. If you feel you're on an icy bit, do *not* panic and slam the brakes, tap them like the van in the video did or ideally even don't touch them at all and just coast through it if at all possible.
if in doubt, not taking the risk is nearly always an available option. as others said, winter tires make a big difference, or good all season tires. be sure to have traction devices in the car. snowsocks are better than nothing, diamond pattern chains are the best you can get. I advise people against cables, unless they can get nothing else. I've heard people say to drive as though you have an egg on each pedal. but really, I think a better mindset is to drive like you have a full drink in your lap with no lid. if you do get into a skid, people throw around the term "countersteer" because it sounds impressive, but the best thing to remember is to steer in the direction you want to go. also, if you do get snow in your area, I've found a flat nose shovel with a short handle is the best configuration for clearing snow from around your wheels.
I've been caught out similarly to that cyclist overtake and right turn clip. Sitting two cars behind a moped on a national speed limit road and the car in front of me goes to overtake, or so I thought. They were moving into a space in the hatches to turn right. It was dark but I should have been more on it.
The black Merc should really be getting an F, that level of hesitation is extremely dangerous on a road people are speeding up to 70mph. The Tesla was too committed when they realised the Merc wasn't going, so did the best thing to fix a bad situation, however relied heavily on his ability to control his car, the VW not moving over and the Merc definitely not pulling out, even at a slow speed, a lot of unknowns. In 5 years of driving, not once have I seen that and I use the motorway often, I do however see people accelerating far too slowly; sometimes crawling down at 40mph until they can see a gap they like. Which is fine if your car accelerates 40-60 quickly to dip in front of a lorry, but not for others behind who are now bunching up and have no acceleration space. That Merc driver needs a good talking to and don't use the motorway or dual carriage ways with slip roads if you've not got the confidence to.
I disagree - I read the black Merc as being slow down the joining road BECAUSE they'd seen the lorry and the space behind, so they were timing their arrival to where they have all the time in the world to build up speed from virtually standstill. I think the viewer was planning to match speeds, then look for the space (not an unusual or even wrong method) and got caught out.
I agree with most. No road vehicle accelerates from 40-60 as easily as it slows from 60-40, so it is always better to accelerate early then adjust your speed. I have been sandwiched on a narrow slip road behind somebody not doing more than 30 (yes 30) & another behind who was tailgating me, clearly not understanding why I was hanging back. How easy is it to adjust your speed once you have built it up? I have occasionally glanced at the speedo once merged & it usually reads somewhere around 60, so it annoys me to hear people state they do no more than 50 because it is safer.
@@theaikidoka Are you saying Mercedes can't accelerate? Sorry, I disagree completely. They will cause an accident if they haven't already if they carry on not matching speed with the motorway on the slip road. F F F.
How can you think that in this position, the black Merc is right to slow down for the gap behind the Lorry, while hopefully noticing the Tesla behind? If you have all the time in the world, crack on, but their discomfort to come out in front of the Lorry, which we know is restricted in speed, is just daft, a slip road is designed for people to build up speed to meet the flow of traffic, the merc's idea of flow is to just slow down and stop, how is that meeting the flow? Very very dangerous and the fact you think that's okay is highly concerning. They were too slow down the slip road, panicked, or don't have the confidence on these roads, and then bottled it, causing a very dangerous situation made worse by the impatient Tesla driver. Also, watch the video again, the slip road is small, so they didn't have the space or time to maintain a decent speed, to join behind the Lorry, potentially causing another dangerous situation where they are moving too slowly on a fast moving road with no build up of traffic.@@theaikidoka I absolutely however love the debate because we all can learn something from it and better ourselves as drivers, because we all share the road. Ashley's videos are always thought provoking, or just downright educational. Oh and Ashley, the cyclist getting a K had me laughing my head off, cheers for that pal xD
At 8:10 it sounds like the driver is on the phone. Even assuming hands free, that's a distraction and would explain the failure to anticipate let alone brake.
Also, don't be fooled into thinking if it isn't white ,it isn't slippy. Black ice lives up to it's name even in mild conditions, after a cold spell when the road is still below freezing.
First clip I would have given the black Merc an F, as braking sharply instead of carrying on accelerating onto the main carriageway was a very dangerous move. In the clip with the blue Citroen doing a daft U-turn, at least the viewer steered around the Citroen rather than just slamming on the brakes which would have probably caused a collision. With the dog one, I do wonder if the driver had just carried on the tiny dog might have just gone under the car and avoided contact with the tyres and would have been OK. The dog owner gets an F! Pity there was no sound on the black ice clip as the engine noise could have given clues to the driver's actions on the slippery surface.
Good save on the small dog, but I couldn't help but notice the driver started to swerve onto the other side of the road (especially as they were positioned seemingly on or over the line due to the small kids waiting to cross). Ashley, I think the general advice on doing emergency stops/swerving is to really only do so when the animal is large enough to potentially damage the car's windscreen or put passengers at risk, e.g. something like a horse, sheep, larger dogs, etc - is that right? For me, the swerve felt a touch dangerous as if the brakes hadn't been quite so keen, the driver would have been in the path of the oncoming car and could have caused a more serious accident rather than flattening the dog (as much as I love dogs!). Not to say the driver was wrong in the action they took though, given the circumstances and the speed at which it at all happened.
7:00 was , to use your vernacular , a non event . The silver car gave space to the cyclist , and was trafficating right ( not clear from the video for how long ) , although as an advanced driver I would have given a supplementary hand signal , as illustrated in Roadcraft , to clarify that I was not merely overtaking but actually turning right ) . As an advanced , following , driver , I would have held back until it was clear what was happening . No one in this clip did anything particularly wrong , but there is a failure in driver instruction in lack of consideration towards giving hand signals to supplement or clarify already given mechanical signals when actually turning right as well as passing slow moving traffic or just adopting a position in a right lane o turn right - this is all illustrated in Roadcraft , as well as the Ministry f transport 'Driving' manual , which is much more detailed than 'Highway Code' .
7:13 the blue Citroen is a classic example of the importance of positioning. Yes, they had their indicator on, but sometimes they'll have no use whatsoever if the car is badly positioned enough.
On the 4th clip I picked up on the road to the right then the speed camera sign. In my mind, that is the strong sign in the past junction coming up where there has been lots of problems. Therefore, I’m not even thinking about overtaking until such time as I clear the junction.
Last one is quite frightening. Does the fact that this section of the road is in the shade of the trees increase the likelihood of ice being on the road?
Yes, micro climates can be a real hazard when temperatures are around freezing. Shade can sometimes prevent the road icing over at night but prevent it melting in the day. Dips in the road, especially under low bridges or higher areas such as crests can all have separate micro climate conditions.
7:00 the silver car moves back to the left - why?! that made it look like an overtake. The Silver car gets an E in my book and cam car a B for being alert enough to sort it all out without danger to the cyclist or silver car - good job he wasn't driving lorry - that silver car would be no more
the other thing about the black ice clip is the road is at the bottom of a bank that the houses sit on and has very little camber - prime place for water to slowly collect...
I was driving from Leeds to Keighley & over to Hebden Bridge on a moonlit winters morning, about 06:00. I passed a police car parked above the moorland road, with both officers busy writing something, illuminated by the interior light. The first indication I had of anything wrong was passing a car on its roof about 20 feet from the road. Downhill ahead I saw a line of red tail lights & stopped traffic, so I slowed and came to halt about 500 yards away. When I got out to walk down to see what the problem was, I could hardly stand it was so slippery. The road had not been salted and it was 6 degrees C when I left Leeds.
I was the one that got featured on this channel for driving into the ditch in the winter about a year ago. Even I think that viewer in the last clip went too fast for conditions. No way I would have went that fast without proper winter tires.
@6:15: I don't comment on many of these situations, as a right had side driver, interpreting reactions is almost always compromised by 'translating' to the left (time loss and possibility of getting the transposing wrong as a result) but this is universal: The onus is on the driver to merge the two reactions into one. After overtaking, you don't speed up again, you moderate your speed to address both actions into one smooth transition.
I made my comment above before waiting for Ashley's overview, which I absolutely agree with. But time and again, as a cyclist, I see this happening at red lights ahead, where drivers insist on jockeying to 'get there first''. What advantage can possibly be gained from doing so? In all fairness, and I'm a very able cyclist, other cyclists do this too. When they know you (a very able cyclist) have already had to pass them from many stops prior, they still insist on 'getting to the top of the line' at the next stop light. It's infuriating, and it's dangerous. Like dancing, driving is a flow, and the less turbulence in that flow the better for all.
It was interesting watching the red car following the van, although black ice can be incredibly hard to spot, like you said in the video the suttle warning signs were there around them, most obviously was the frozen grass verge, but i must admit if i see a vehicle braking infront of me the first question I'm asking myself is why are they braking?..,,if I'm quiet a bit behind I'll make sure there's enough room behind me and any following vehicle and I'll slow down gradually,,especially important in wet or icy conditions,, i would never ever stamp on the brakes in.those conditions,,another factor to take into account is tyres find it harder to grip and get any heat into them in really cold conditions so rubber becomes more pliable in hotter conditions then cold conditions,, eg they are harder so find it harder to even grip the road....black ice can be hard to spot but you can see it just,, ,i once layed down my bike on a icy bend when the whole bend was sheet ice,, nothing i could have done,, it happened at pretty much walking speed because the back lanes where icy,, i must admit i did think the red car was going to fast in those conditions 😮.
@Rover200Power if its icy and you see someone braking its usually because of possible ice on the road because if its a minor road the chances are it certainly hasn't been gritted because councils usually concentrate on gritting bigger roads , also people brake for numerous reasons in the bad weather not just because of ice.
