I used to be a techie, until social media, (mainly FB and Twitter) was invented, basically the sends-or-ship pushing kind. Now the only tech I want is EMP tech.

I bought an apple computer in 96 when I thought I wanted to be a graphic artist, and back then, it was already obvious how terrible and greedy of a company they were. That was the one and only Apple product I ever owned, and I laugh to myself when people complain about the latest greedy thing Apple did to them. It's almost like a lot of people aren't very intelligent 😂

Instead you probably purchased a Samsung, from that South Korean megacorp that literally employs 25% of an entire country.

I hate subscriptions as much as anyone but owning a piece of software isn’t very helpful when it will be obsolete in a few years anyway. At some point, the developer will stop supporting it, stop updating it, go out of business, etc. and it won’t work with the new operating system. You’ll be in a situation where you’re stuck in time to avoid more costs; you can’t upgrade or you’ll have to buy another piece of software. Again, I hate “renting”my budget app on a monthly basis for so many reasons, but it’s really the only sane option to stay current. Otherwise I’d be stuck with an old computer and old OS to keep using the app I actually own.

I just planted over a dozen fruit trees and have a bunch of nice AM & SW radio receivers. I just tested a huge homemade AM loop earlier and picked up Dallas WBAP 820 over 300 miles away at 1 pm. I grew up on a farm in rural Louisiana. They don`t like people like me because they can`t control me and they never will and I don`t eat their toxic food or watch their TV slime or movies.

That is a choice they are all making. It saddens me to no end but it is a choice. I’m middle-aged and at family gatherings, I am the ONLY one not on their phone because I choose to be with my family. I can’t make them choose the same, I just lead by example and wait for them to wake up. But my point here is the younger generation is in their phone, of course, but so are my generation, and so are the old folks! The old folks are just as bad about constantly checking social media as the young folks are! It’s a widespread problem but it’s a choice. If I can leave my phone in the car or in my purse and not have any irresistible urge to get it out, so can everyone else. There’s nothing special about me. I don’t find my family particularly fascinating or have the patience of a saint or anything. I just want social time to be real life human interactions, it’s just that simple.

This is then the very thing when it comes to marriage which is the consequence of lust (and fantasy of playing their own happy family) and not true connection because people who are more connected with their gadgets don't know how to form relationships, which is resulting in an almost 60% divorce rate ! I remember whn the 1st Bridget Jones Diary movie came out and the scene at the dinner table when someone announced the divorce rate was 1 in 3 and I thought that was really bad but 2 in 3 is a disaster. I

I agree. And as someone who loves classical music and art and took piano lessons for several months, I found this hard to watch. The piano being crushed was especially painful. They could have used CGI to show these things shrinking and being compounded into the phone if that was the message they were going for. Us watching culture being destroyed gradually doesn't send the same message.

The last Apple product I had was an iPhone 5. The only reason I still have it is because I have lots of music on it. It lies in a drawer unless I want to listen to the music.

I think that is correct. I am abundantly technologically challenged; there is nothing intuitive about it to me. My husband was the exact opposite: he, along with you has been in since those days. He passed away a few years ago and I use Apple products because they’re relatively easy for us challenged people to survive in a world where everything is forcibly online. I hate it.

You could get a cheapo test PC and install one of the easier Linux distributions like Manjaro, Mint or Ubuntu on it to start, and progress to more advanced distros as you learn. Or you could just stick with one of those, which would still give you more control than an Apple computer. One of the areas that Linux-based operating systems shine is their package management software (software/app stores) tend to be really easy to use. I walked my elderly mother through installing Manjaro on her laptop and she has been happily using it for years. Phone-wise, Android isn't too different from iOS in useability, plus you'd have more options. For example, my Android phone is rooted and doesn't have any closed source software on it. Again, you could learn at your own pace and even if you didn't totally ditch proprietary software from the Google Play Store, you could supplement it with open source apps from F-Droid (an app store similar to the Google Play Store, except everything is free and open source without ads). Just look up some videos here on RU-vid. They'll explain things far better than I can in these comments. :)
