Beautiful footage! And it shows one detail often missed on air shows - the thrust reverser, and what it looked like and how it actually worked - this is the best video I've ever seen when it comes to that.
I did my military service at an Swedish air base in the 80:ies. As a plane mechanic i came close to the Viggen and the most impressiva was when 2 Viggen started at the same time side by side with the EBK After burner full throttle and after leaving ground go stright up in the sky until you couldnt see them.
It is an awesome jet! The Viggen is my most favorite jet to fly in the DCS World simulator because it is just so unique and easy to operate. It is actually one of the easiest jets to land. You should look into DCS so you can really get to know the Viggen. Here is good video of the Viggen in DCS. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DpFIHZJbTtY.html
One of my top 5 favourite aircraft, I absolutely love the Viggen, it looks so damn imposing. Look how hard they can slam it down, amazing engineering. Standing that close to one taking off must be an intense experience!
I too think that viggen is an aircraft that is at the top of the list as the Draken is. Both are developed by a nation with less than ten million people. This makes it even more impressive
what does it for me is that the thing is geniunly a massive aircraft and can still stop quicker than most modern jet fighters!! also it is damn beautiful and atleast in sim it is amazing to fly!
The Viggen pilots.... taxi a bit faster than a brisk walk.... more like the rotation speed of a Cessna 150 lol. Also it's amazing how the main landing gears can withstand forcible landings shown in the video.
Sweden has one of the most versatile Air Forces in the world. Utilizing highways from selected, well hidden air bases for takeoffs and landings makes for a nightmare scenario for an enemy looking to destroy a nation's air power in one fell assault. Many smaller bases trumps a few large, strategic bases almost every engagement.
..It's called 'Common Sense'......-and not 'murican overpriced, greedy bullshit ..... The world is getting very tired of america and fat-ass corporations running scams ..........
Yes, quite impressive that a plane that could lurk at the edge of a forest could have the capacity to go up and confront the mighty SR-71 Blackbird, on small country roads with only a few hundred meters straight road ..
@@diamonddog257 No, thank Robert Gates for fucking us out of more F-22s. We had the perfect fighter, but anal retentive Gates wanted his POS F-35. The industry gave him what he asked for...... a turd with wings. Politicians are what makes clusterfucks like the F-35.
Can you name any modern fighter plane that can land and start STOL?! JAS Sum: Sweden need this function to be able to use roads. Very smart!. Ordinary airfields will be bombed away shortly after a war starts. Not so easy to bomb away all roads.....
Talked to a former Viggen pilot in the spring of -18 and he claimed that, when Viggen was new, they tried to land it hard but the ground effect was so strong that they hardly exceeded 17 ft/s. That´s 11 mph (18 km/h) vertical speed. Would probably work on an aircraft carrier.
I mean, 17ft/s IS hard. This landing gear was constructed to hold up for it. A Boeing 737, or any airliner for that matter would have to go back for proper inspection after such.
SAAB was the first with canards, now so many have followed. I rate them as the most competent defence consortium in the world. The Drekken, Viggen and now the Gripen, all brilliant. I also LOVED the 2 SAABs I have owned ,,,Snif :(
I still maintain... Upgraded versions of this Wonderful plane , mass produced and deployed at NATO Frontline Dispersed Covert Airfields would a real game changer ... Amazing savings and utility from a single aircraft...🤗💕👌🔥
Great footage. The "follow me bike" is nice, well you cannot instruct pilots " drive Info the woods, and at the second grazing deer, turn right. Saab fighter a/c mght not be the top notch, but their low per hour operating costs would make the American taxpayer cry.
@@ibizenco i think the jas39 e/f are very superb jets, but the german Luftwaffe don' t want them because they have just one engine. I don' t share this position.
all these cameras sound recorders just max out and and those low frequency bands get cut out when the Viggens engine is pointing at you. So it just get silent ... and this is not what is happening in real life. Instead this is the moment you know you are alive, you will feel it.
No, the Brazilian Air Force bought 36 Gripen E & F. The fighters in this video are various versions of Viggen. The Viggen first flight was in 1967 and the last one retired from service in Swedish Air Force 2007.
It actually happened once, by mistake, on the Malmen airfield. It did not end well for the A/C...and the driver had to live with the jokes afterwards. Someone even draw a caricature of it and it was distributed to other wings, so they wouldn't repeat the mistake. If I remember correctly, simultanious A/B engagement was inhibited after a while.
Typically you would preferably land with AFK (automatic speed control) with pre selected reversing. As soon as the nose wheel switch is triggered then the thrust reversing is engaged with full throttle.
