Wow, that is really a thing of beauty! I love the dark Damascus bit and light silver inlay, such great contrasts. Great profile as well, those subtle 'thorns' really add a lot of character, as well as the facets added to the bottom of the inner curve. Can't say enough good things about it! Thanks for sharing 👍

I just cut the sound during the sped up parts so you didn't have to hear Dereck's sped-up chipmunk voice.

Hi Derek, Great video. It seems that the shallow V on the bottom of the back of the axe (where the shaft goes through) was ground in? Thanks, Chris

Great video. I'm sorry for my ignorance, but what is that crust that keeps forming and falling off the red hot part of the metal as you hammer it?
@NESMforged
@NESMforged 6 лет назад
Thanks! It's black iron oxide or "scale". Basically rust that happens at high temperatures.

@nickscherer7843
@nickscherer7843 7 лет назад
Hello, beautiful work, especially the damascus-edge. I just wonder: Does the hardening happen after the inlay is done? It should I guess, and if so, is there any need to protect the wire from melting away. Í have seen man metal-inlays in swords, axes or knifes, but this particular process is never shown. Or are these blades not heat treated and just for decorative purpose? In any case, this axe is an great piecs of craftsmenship and art, thanks for the effort showing it to us! Tom
@NESMforged
@NESMforged 7 лет назад
Thanks Nick! The inlay was done after the hardening in this case because the body of the axe is mild steel. You can also do it before hardening as well.

@matthewscanlan4387

The symbol is a triquetra. Its used mainly in celtic culture but is also found in norse and some japanese mythology. Its mainly used to depict the holy trinity in celtic and christian norse uses. Older norse samples may have used it to depict asgard, mitgard, and utgard, but there's no definitive proof. The norse used similar symbols like odins horns and the valknut.

would anything like this axe be too hard to do just by hand? Obviously it depends on how much time/effort is put in, but for someone without power tools a project like this is intimidating

The video doesn't show it, but you make a slight dovetail at the bottom of the original trough. When the steel is hammered down it traps the sterling silver.

Corey Shier notice the fps is sped up (to save time) every time the sound cuts out. If the sound was on, all we would hear is chipmunk garble.

That chisel he's using in the first thirty seconds is closer to a viking axe than what he makes. Far, far more alike. Most war axes were small, about two to three fingers wide and no longer than the palm of your hand, or from heel to the first knuckle. What you see passing as 'viking axes' online tend to be wood axes with crude modern attempts at medieval artwork on them. Don't be fooled, do your homework.

It's just a basic axe with some artwork on it. Real war axes didn't have so thick blades , they were a lot like tomahawks without the pick on the back.
