In order to better understand life in the Viking Age, I believe wearing Viking clothing in real life situations is a must. Viking clothes were not only made for survival in the harsh climate of Scandinavia, they are also comfortable and practical.
Keep in mind that the clothes in this video are not made from handwoven fabrics, so they do appear somewhat different or not entirely historically correct, but for someone who aims for better understanding of the Viking Age, they serve their purpose.

What region and period are you portraying? I like the Russ trousers but am confused by the fact your shoes have laces and the extremely low neckline on the very short under tunics rather than knee length under kirtle. We have a lot of evidence for long narrow leather belts with decorative strap ends for men but absolutely no evidence for wide, modern style. belts. Could you provide sources for the wide, shorter belt and laced shoes?

It really is great kit, but its worth saying that most of it can be made using relatively simple hand-sewing techniques. There are plenty of tutorials and patterns available on the internet. The shoes are probably the trickiest to make, but even this is do-able. If you've not gotten kit together yet, then i strongly encourage you. There is great satisfaction to be had walking around clothed only in garments you've made yourself!

As a cape, I have found that military surplus stores are GREAT! I bought a grey and an olive drab wool blankets and they are the best! Sooo worm! Just plain grey and a plain o.d. Green and they go great with my winter kits!, I even took the first one I ever got and put a clasp on the neck and used some tablet weave for some trim on the bottom and neck line. It came out great! So I have 3 wool caps but having some spare tablet weave left over from a beautiful grey wool tunic.

One other thing is that wool is much more practical in real life situations. It stays warm even when wet. Leather gives you all kinds of problems out in the wild.

It must be humbling in a way, to think your Viking ancestors undoubtedly stood in the exact same spot as you, gazing out to the ocean wondering or knowing what is beyond. Quite a time in history, no wonder you are proud of your heritage and lucky to be so physically close to the actual happening.

The women's clothing is also very comfortable and warm and practical. And very pretty! I love historical clothing, and the women's dresses are actually warmer in winter than many of my modern clothes. I think it's because they're a little like a mitten compared to a glove -- in a skirt, my legs keep each other warmer, than when I'm wearing jeans. I wore my historical clothing a lot this last winter, because it was very cold where we live.

Bjorn, thank you so much for sharing! A couple of years ago, my daughter had a 'medieval' wedding, so I made myself a linen underdress and apron dress to wear for the event. Hi Bjørn, from viking sister to brother, the kind of making the socks is called naalbinding or nadelbinding. I am a beginner of this technique but it is great fun. The hat you are showing i know as skloldenham gugel. By the way it is q gratis pleasure to learn to know how the norse qre handling the own viking history. Well about the belt thing, I don't know about Vikings but I read in a book written by an archaeologist about southern Germanic tribes that lived here in Germany that they can pretty much determine the age of grave findings by just looking at the belt/belt width. So with fashion the belt width changed and it got wider first (at some point really wide) then after 500 AD thinner again. So there probably was a certain fashion like that among Vikings as well (depending on the period), but I also think that exceptions existed, so then you're maybe not a "trendy" Viking ;) Also, I know you're not going for 100% accuracy but let me say this, today we think people from the past were all gray and brown and clothing colours like gray, brown, black look cool to us now but the Vikings and other Germanic people were actually quite colourful, they had a large variety of colours such as blue, yellow, green, etc. and the more colourful the more wealthy you were. Anyways, still an epic outfit, wish I had one like that :)

I love this. I wanna have a full Norse Scandinavian or Viking style wardrobe. I would literally wear only historically accurate norse era clothes from 7th to 11th century everyday and ditch the modern clothes 😂❤

Medieval hoods always look so warm and versatile for the weight. I often wear a light wool shirt in a similar way--as a hood, scarf, or shirt. Tie a knot in the bottom and it even becomes a bag :)

The wool socks and mittens are made by crochet. If you soak your timic in 1-2 cups of boraxo or oxy clean for laundry in a bucket filled with between 7-11 liters of water for 24-48 hours and then dry it on a clothesline in the sun, all the staining will be gone. Plus your tunic will look like new.

this is the first of your videos to cross my path and I absolutely loved it. I have been dressing Viking for special occasions for a few years now, definitely not as often as I would like to. I have less than 7.5 years until I retire from my profession and then I can dress Viking much more often! I make the majority of my own Viking attire. I have aprons, kirtles, shieldmaiden warrior attire. and i'm getting more and more accurate with my attire as time goes on. thank you so much for your videos! excuse me while I go binge watch as many as I can!!!

Brikkevaev (I hope I did not butcher that too much) is tablet weaving, so what you talk about is a tablet woven belt. And thank you for your comment concerning authenticity (what the people might have had and what not), just because there is no evidence it does not mean that people did not have it. Thanks for this video! Oh, and I love the music at the finish.

Agree 100%. As a new reenactor, there's nothing more frustrating than an Authenticity Officer saying "If we haven't found one, it didn't exist". Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence. Common sense should be given some weight as well.

Your knowledge is very impressive. I have been interested in the Viking era since I was a child in grade school when I found out that Vikings were the first europeans in the "New World". I have no doubt that Columbus was a late comer and if Viking explorers had kept better records all would have known this. This is the first video of your's I have seen and I subscribed to your channel. Now I think I will actually try to make your Viking Bow and some arrows. Then a knife or a war axe and perhaps I will take the kiddies out on a weekend Viking. "G" Thank you for your time and effort you put into the channel. Off to watch more.
