I wonder why all the Viking and Anglo-Saxon shows can't just tell the real stories of the real people? Why do they mix different historical figures from different centuries when the actual people and stories are so much more fascinating than the fictional fabrications being produced?
I think the writers think there doing something when the true story is really much more interesting my opinion, vikings Valhalla really ruined Edmunds character was actually sad to see
I agree! The true history is so fascinating plus it increases one’s knowledge. The young people ( well, anybody under 70!) these days seem under-educated enough without feeding them more confused drivel that they are going to presume is the real history. I absolutely loved this & so glad I found it today! Thank you, Sir! I truly cannot believe that the Viking influence in the British Isles was not taught in our history classes in high school (1960’s). I’m having a wonderful time catching up on all of this! Now I have 2 reasons to be pissed off about the history curriculum in Canada in the 1960’s! The other period that disappointed me back then was the almost non-existent history of the First Nations people. My Gran who was from Kent mentioned that we had some Danish ancestry but it is unconfirmed for now. I do know that I have Scottish, Dutch & Mohawk blood. Was there a very strong presence of Danish in Kent? I tried using Google to find out if there were any Dutch Vikings but got nowhere. However, a young man who has a Norse magic & traditions show on RU-vid mentioned a heroic person named Redbad. Do you have any info on him? I didn’t finish watching all of the episodes of Vikings but did see Vikings Valhalla which I presumed was not particularly accurate ( I just was watching due to the handsome men! Hey, I may be 71 but I’m not dead yet!). However, I was deeply obsessed with The Last Kingdom. I bought the series because I thought that it was the best TV show I’d seen in…well, forever. I also assumed that it had more than just a grain of accuracy. It certainly opened my eyes to that period of history. I love the author, Bernard Cornwell anyways & bought the whole series of books by “ treasure hunting” in thrift stores. How I wish I knew all of this when I was much younger because I would’ve loved to go to England to see some of the historic sites and artifacts uncovered from that period. I am DEFINITELY now a subscriber & look forward to what you will be presenting to us next! THANK YOU!!
I couldn’t agree with u more! I’ve always wondered y these shows fabricate or makeup stories about historical figures, when there’s no need to, cos the real true life stories of these ppl are just as fascinating as the fictional story/plot/character arcs etc. at least I no I’m not the only 1 to think it lol x
@@shelleyrollins4782 and your as young as u feel Shelley! Your never too old to do something u love and enjoy. I say take the trip to England, if you’ve always dreamed of going, then u should go! I’m from the UK, I live in the north and I recently took a trip to Northumbria, I couldn’t believe how beautiful it was and it’s only 90 mins away from where I live. I would defo recommend going there. But anyways enjoy your life Shelley and remember your never too old to follow a dream ☺️ take care and all the best xxx
@@jessrosefawkes2721 Thank you so much for your kind encouragement! It would be lovely to follow this dream. Maybe if I could find some decent doctors to stabilize my health problems ( I seem to collect autoimmune diseases like some people collect coins!). My son had been a great traveller, mostly to scientific conferences & I’d always thought that he’d take me sometime. But he passed away 8 years ago on a winter hiking trip in the North. It was an impulsive decision he made to check out a new hiking & ski-do trail near where we used to have our house. There was a severe cold weather warning for that day that he probably didn’t hear because he had a stack of cd’s in the car. We had no idea he was up there. I couldn’t warn him that since he hadn’t been back there since he was 5, he didn’t know how to dress for that far in Northern Ontario. He got lost & froze to death. I did have chronic health problems before but I’ve been understandably gutted since then. Right now the doctor shortage & long wait lists are horrible. If I could maybe be seen by a doctor with more knowledge in Toronto then maybe I have a chance to be better attended to. I do what I can & am lucky that I’ve been a voracious reader my whole life! I still have one child, my daughter, and the little Snowshoe Siamese cat my son got me a year before he passed away. I’m blessed that way! Mind you, I must confess that I have been terribly depressed for a few months. Today is Mother’s Day here & the sun actually has come out (at least I think that big warm shiny thing in the sky is the sun!). You’ve brightened my day & I certainly hope you can come to Canada some day (but see the countryside, not the Southern Ontario cities. We have spectacular scenery & I would so love to move back to British Columbia!).
@@historyprofiles hey could you make or put all these videos into a timeline order i wouldn't mind a 20 hr of all these videos in order there's so many viking and england kings
Dude lol get out of my head!! I was actually researching st Bricee's Day this evening and just happened to land here again lol. Keep them coming guys!!
I watch a good amount of online historical content and my knowledge of the Viking age is extensive so when I say it's well done, it usually is. This channel always manages to give accurate details condensed into a short, documentary style format. Entertaining and concise. Well done, my friend, as usual.
Dont get me wrong I love Vikings...but Anglo saxons where more brutal then vikings had same gods as vikings ...and Anglo saxons made the weeks we use today Monday Tuesday etc....and anglo saxons weren't ( english) until we converted and gave up the lands in England...all I'm saying is the anglo saxons were so brutal and they influenced us today but get no credit like the vikings do ...why us this
@@historyprofilesNothing against the actor,but the character was horrible a whiny/brattish child,when in reality a inspiring/charismatic/great warrior.
@@historyprofiles Ik their are very few sources but in the future can you do a video on Caute Dannast son of Gorm the old. Or a theory video if he become king of Denmark and not Harold Bluetooth
Best friend & I are writing a 4 book series: The Norseman Saga. Caelan Erikson is an immortal Norseman tht wields the Hell-Forged Spear & Glacius Axe while trying to procure Divine & Unholy weapons/artifacts before The Fallen can tip the scales to Darkness. The Archangel Michael blessed/cursed Caelan with nigh-immortatlity & made him Heaven's earthbound Procurer
Dude. I used to smoke a fat joint and watch History Time channe. Now I smoke a fat joint and watch History Profiles channel. Love it. The video is good quality and the voices and the overall presentation is top quality homey. Can't wait for some videos.
England should be the most Viking country in all of Europe---what with the continuous flow of migration from the Jutland peninsula beginning in the 5th century to the 11th century--reinforced by the Norman invasion in 1066
They could have done this with vikings Valhalla but they changed a lot of the story and made Edmund a complete coward was sad to see how they ruined his character
Ragnar,! As much as everyone would love him to of been real, "according to Anglo-Saxon chronicles" the son of his dogs pet mouse quickly mustard up a band of merry men
The king committed a genocidal warcrime, and then had to pay the piper. Seems to me that the Danes were totally within their rights to roll up and start burning shit down.
Indeed! Alfred the great invited the Danes to settle in England and leave in peace weather pagan or Christian. He would have been rolling in his grave at Aethered the unready’s awful decision making which ultimately led to the Viking conquest of England, and when Edward the confessor finally got the throne back, the power of the line of Wessex kings was practically non existent. A sad end to such a powerful dynasty
Since Canute killed Uhtred by assassination, I don't doubt that he had Edmund assassinated so that he can have the whole country though Edmund was the rightful King.
I do think he may have had Edmund assassinated, a more likely candidate could have been Eadric Streona and Canute could have commissioned the kill then killed Eadric afterwards. The fact that he ordered the assassination of Edmonds sons is telling though. The embarrassment of denying single combat with him may have been too much to handle for him in front of his viking army who above all admired strength
I came across Edmund Ironside when researching my family tree , of course can never confirm that he was an ancestor of mine . I’m very proud of my ( hopefully) ancestor after that rollicking tale !
after watching the last kingdom show you mentioned utred , but was that utred the father or the son ? and was the son actually taken and. made . a dane just curious?
I genuinely hope you are joking. Because if you actually think that there were Moorish and black Vikings, then by Odin you should go read some history and search up some Viking age archeology. Frankly, that is an insult to the cultural heritage of Scandinavia.
@@thenerdgaming9129 why would I joke. The insult is you not believing what i am saying or at least not bothering to investigate what i have said before commenting. The only ones being insulted are the moors by white washed from history
@@thenerdgaming9129 agreed. The Viking is a profession, it's essentially a Germanic pirate. You could even say Anglo-Saxons were Vikings. Raiders who settled down, sailed, and then converted to Christianity. Anyway there were some Finnish, Slavic, or Baltic Viking pirates, the Cerunonians were famous Vikings. Because they were still pirates raiding the Baltic coast. And they were pagans. But they were proto Latvians. All Vikings were Europeans, except Kilick the Avar. But who gives a fuck about one Turk. Most Vikings were Anglo-Saxons and Danes, Geats, Swedes and Norsemen. Some were from Uralic, Baltic, Slavic or Celtic ethnicities but the vast majority were Scandinavians And all but Kilick were white European.
