I discovered Lufolk and his Channel. We decided to make a collaboration. He would forge me this amazing blade and I would make a video of how to Finnish it. The blade is made in the way the vikings would have made their blades in the blacksmith forge using the same techniques. The only difference is that I specifically asked for the very tip of the blade not to be tempered like the rest. The reason for this is, that I have a need to use the tip of the blade for drilling holes in wood, bone and antler. If the tip is well tempered - and therefor holds an incredibly good cutting edge, the tip is prone to break off when used for drilling and not carving. The tip of my knife will loose its razor edge a bit faster than the rest of the blade and need sharpening more often. The rest of the blade is tempered and great for carving and keeping an edge. This is an experiment I discussed with the master blacksmith and I look forward to getting to know how it functions on my trips and as a tool in my projects.
The original handle I am recreating was made from bone, but I decided to use antler as I wanted a knife with a close connection to the forest and my experiences their this time of the year with the might red deer stags and the pine resin recently collected. Be aware that many places it is not legal to collect the shed antlers. The antler I collect here was brought by me to the forest and placed there for me to collect in this video. It is not known whether or not many of the carvings on antler and bone items form the viking age was filled with black material (glue, resin, charcoal and beeswax etc). But it does look good when the contrast between the black and white is emphasized.
ALL TOOLS USED IN THIS VIDEO IS BASED ON ACTUAL ITEMS FROM THE VIKING AGE.

Great video! I enjoy seeing the wildlife! We don't have wild boar so much up here! Deer, moose ,wolves yes! Magnificent looking animals! Love the knife ,especially the simplicity of the build! Thank you!

Thank you Ian. The wild boar population In Denmark is very small and kept in controlled areas. These shots of the boars Are from a 1400 hectar forest thats is fenced. Its a it sad but the danish agriculture asociation fears that our huge production of pork mest could suffer from diseases bought in from contact with wild boar. But at least a few small populations of wild boar Are kept in big protected forests for people like us to get a chance to see these animals. Im forgot where is it you Are from? All the best

Wow, the deer look so majestic! And holding this tool in your hand, you will be connected to the forests, and to the stag that gave you the antler. It's easy to see how connected our ancestors were to nature, how they might have perceived the spirit of the animal being retained in the knife. I'm a subscriber to Lufolk's channel too, you make me realise I should run over and leave some comments on his vids too! 😂 You've done a great job on the knife! I love how it turned out! 😃 The heat from your hand doesn't soften or melt the resin glue I trust? And I'm interested in hearing how the experiment with a softer tip performs over time. Have you considered making a tool to carve the ring-and-dot design that appears on some artifacts? Always wonderful to come along on the crafting journey with you! Hello:) thanks for this nice comment. I really like your thoughts on the connection with the forest. I totally get you. I am really impressed with Lufolks work and our conversation about this collaboration was really pleasant. And the blade is amazing. Its a really good question about the hands heating up the glue. So far I have not used the knife long enough to get experience. I have made several combs with the same glue for decoration. In those cases there has been no problems, but also you dont grip the combs as tight or for that long as you would with a knife. The glue I made gets very hard when it hardens, so i dont assume it will be an issue. I am quiet confident that it takes alot more heat for the glue to soften up than my hands will produce. I have a tool for ring and Dots. I use it in the antler belt buckle video. I love that design but with this handle i wanted to follow the original design with only lines. I Will also keep you updated on the softer tip

Most Viking knife handles i know Of is just one material for the whole handle. Bone, wood, antler. So No specific piece for the hilt. But im sure there is examples.
