Viking/Norse Historybounding: Designing a Modern Historical Capsule Wardrobe (+ actual shoemaking!)

If you want to ease your way into mens fashion I would HELLA appreciate a video about turning historical mens clothes into a women's wardrobe for all the ladies like me who like masc/androgynous clothes more that dresses and blouses

"They become so *aggressively* viking so fast" made me giggle. Gotta say, I'm an illustrator most of the time and am taking notes about that fur collar. That came out SO well!

I feel like shoemaking is one of those things where I'm still a little like "wait am I allowed to do that?". But yours turned out so good, I might just have to give it a go!

I NEED THOSE SHOES! The whole capsule is glorious, but those shoes! Due to medical problems, the only actual ‘shoes’ I can currently wear are horrible ballerina style flats - absolutely nothing with structured sides or uppers. Now I need to research those shoes/boots, and make myself a pair along with the felt liner to make them into boots for the winter. Amazing!

Two years ago I found two massive old earrings with gem inset that would look rediculous on anyone. They are about 5cm in diameter. So obviously I bought them because... crafting? But now ive seen the brooches.... yes. That is going to be it! Thanks so much for the inspiration once again, this wardrobe episode is a gem!

Since I started watching your videos I've become really interested in historical clothing and designing clothes for my worldbuiling projects. I recently bought a book called "Viking Dress Code" by Kamil Rabiega, which has helped me a lot with my designs. It shows a lot of reconstructions of scandinavian clothing from the 8th to 11th century, as well as fotos of surviving garments, and it goes into detail about their construction. Just as a little recommendation for anyone interested in viking fashion.

You mentioned the broaches and beads and that you thought they were called "Birka". Birka is the location of one of the grave sites that have been excavated by archaeologists, so you may see a lot of things saying "the Birka [this or that]". You'll see this a lot with Scandinavian graves being named after their location, so it isn't to be confused with the name of the item itself :)

I'd wear it all! I think the skirt could be a little fuller, more a-line and less pencil.

My first thought was that I would wear viking inspired clothes without the modernasiations, but it turned out better than I expected. You are really good at picking out the features that makes the feel. Also love the shoe-making! This gave me many ideas. In my head, I really want to wear both viking and medieval styles as they are in modern day. But in reality, I will not do it. I actually need thoes modernatiations to be able to use them in everyday life.

Bringing back the beautiful!! Today's styles are jeans and a tshirt. UGH....been in mourning over our current fashions for years; couldn't take it anymore when I saw flower pots and plastic blow up for clothing going down the runways of Paris. I am also making a modernly styled victorian/edwardian/scottish full wardrobe for daily and seasonal wear. Thank you for this. My family is scottish & my husband's is norse so everything has to be styled for the benefit of our two cultures to pass on to our children, all as a cohesive past. I want them to know where they come from so it might help them figure out where they are going, and maybe they won't get lost along the way. I'm totally justifying making this wardrobe as it's all expensive, is by thinking that I am investing in the future of my family. As they will have a fantastic wardrobe to wear or copy or whatever AND if anything ever happens there will be hundreds and hundreds of yards of usable fabrics, furs, laces, silks & linens for my great grandbabies to use for their clothing if need be. I mean wow, we have never had access to such an extensive array of fabrics of every kind, laces of every style and thread, and furs from the farthest reaches of the earth (that have access to etsy or google) in history, Not to mention I can get ahold of just about every pattern you could dream of! It's amazing & very exciting! Sewing to my heart's content is bad for my wallet. Btw my dream turns into a horrible nightmare at the thought of doing all of this without my wonderful electric sewing helpers. The devil is in the details haha.

Keep up the good work. I have always been a rebel when it came to clothing. My parents were constantly on my back to "dress normal" and would stress continuously about "what people would think". Finally, in my thirties, I decided I could dress how I wanted and sod what people thought. Being a part offirst a re enactment group, then a LARP community have given me sooooo much leverage to take my wardrobe where I want. I now encourage my grown children to do the same, and make garments for my grandchildren. I am pleased to see they dress how they feel, not always how convention suggests. Well done.

One of my favourite things about this one is how much layering you can do, I would never have considered layering two dresses together before but it looks great! I’m a Viking period reenactor who has a huge bug about historical accuracy. However, before you sigh and roll your eyes, I love your capsule wardrobe. Very cleverly done! Just in case it influences you in any way, those flaps down the front are a total historical misinterpretation and the overdress was more tube shaped with loop straps. BUT as I said...beautifully done. Burka is the place where a lot of clothing was found in graves.

I was kind of sceptical about this video because norse and viking culture has never been my cup of tea but I thought "Come on, it's Mariah Pattie, even if it's bad it's going to be good!" and then I saw that apron t-shirt with laced sides and I fell in love! Tho I will also admit that I was disappointed when the fur collar went from colourful to brown, it's just so unfair they didn't have colourful animals to make collars out of...

So I finally got around to watching this. I do medieval reenactment with an emphasis on Norse/Viking. I've been needing to update my work wardrobe and the red dress style is so going into my rotation (as soon as I have a chance to get to making it.) and you've inspired me to up my game on the skirts I'm going to make. I'm going to adding trim/embroidery to some of them.

I love the shoes! I did a very similar thing. Having never done leather working. I bought all the supplies needed and jumped in head first and made a pair moccasins. They have been my everyday shoe for two years now. Being able to make my own clothes And shoes so gratifying.

I am obsessed with your capsule wardrobe videos! After the medieval one I went and bought 6 books on medieval fashion, clothing, patterns - basically anything I could get my hands on. And I'm determined to make myself a mini medieval capsule wardrobe of 3-4 pieces. I've been looking for wearable adaptations of antique style clothes (soft spot for 18th century) for years now so I'm super excited about your channel! :)

Lovely! I personally would lean towards a less fitted style for the skirts, but that's just what I like. I love the embroidery and the detail you put into that. I do Viking-era living history events and all of my outfits are a bit of a work in progress. I finish an apron dress, wear it, add embroidery as I go. They're never completely "finished" in that sense because I can always add or change trim and add on to the embroidery. I do the apron dress style that is closed up the sides, with triangle gores for fullness. The lighter-coloured blouse was very reminiscent (for me) of the Rus styles, from the more eastern end of the Viking world. The shoes are fantastic. The modern version of those are called ghillies, and are used in Irish and Scottish dancing. I've thought about making or buying a pair because I love how they look.

I made 3 apron dresses, very similar to the one shown at 3:28. One is inauthentic but TOUGH red cotton duck cloth, the other two are more-authentic linen (a blue one & a green one). All three are mid-calf length. Worn with a linen shift, tablet-woven belt, head kerchief, cooking knife & keys, boots & 10th century repro bling, I am all set to cosplay. Over a tank top or sleeved T-shirt, with slip-on sneakers or Mary Janes, these apron dresses are fine to wear to town. Of course my apron dresses have capacious side seam pockets. ALL my clothes have decent pockets, lol.

Oh my gosh, new favorite channel!!

You made me realise what I needed in my life. Viking-style embroidery on modern clothing. Oh gosh, yes. Though it may prove a bit difficult to carry out because I can't draw a simple clear line in the right direction for the life of me, which is also why I watched the process of you drawing the fur with rising awe and my jaw totally dropped to the floor at the end result. This is magic. And then you actually made shoes too :O I'm so glad you made this video! I happen to have some nerdy knowledge of the period and place in question, and I'm gonna share because this is what one does with nerdy knowledge, and maybe it's even going to be of use to somebody ;) This tablet-woven band with a braid pattern you used on the neckline edge of the red dress is actually based on a find from Birka, IIRC, although the original one was brocaded with gold (or silver?) wire, hence it survived. The pattern on the trim you added to the green apron dress is called kivrim or 'running dog' and is traced to... 19th c. Turkich or otherwise Arabic carpets ^^" But it's a beautiful pattern nonetheless and fitting for Viking-inspired clothes. The deer antler pattern is not historical, and the previous applies to it as well in my opinion. You just gave me an idea! I have a pair of those - we call them "Bundschuhe", "drawstring shoes" - that got ruined due to a heavy rain on a medieval festival after which they were not dried properly. They molded and deteriorated in the sole area. I killed the mold with chlorine, but the sole is still damaged. I might make new soles for them and sandwich the damaged area between a thinner inner layer and the sturdy outer sole. I happen to have sole leather, because I once planned on making my own medieval shoes, but then ended up buying a pair.

I’m very inspired by your modernization of Viking style. I’m going to use my LL Bean split neck 3/4 sleeve tee and embroider a Nordic design around the neck and bottoms of the sleeves. I’m also going on the hunt on EBay/ThredUp for the Everlane “Japanese GoWeave Picnic Dress” because I think I can embellish it with the broaches/necklace detail and get a bit of the Viking flavor into my wardrobe. So fun! Have you watched the great Viking documentary on the British Museum’s RU-vid channel? I watched it last night. I think you will love it.
