And now with the lockdown I teach some theory daily by zoom and your film is one that allows me to show a good and simple technique we can when we do in the workshop when we can back to normalcy. So again thanks for the well shown process.

Thank you for that, i really enjoyed it. I haven't got a kiln for the last annealing, is it inadvisable to use a torch because of risk of melting?
@ZinkSterling
@ZinkSterling 3 года назад
The kiln is actual to harden it and you couldn’t do it with a torch because you would have to maintain 575°F for an hour to get the desired effect.

To get the same effect, a smaller scale, take two of the clock wise strands and tight twist by hand counter clockwise
@ZinkSterling
@ZinkSterling 3 года назад
Yea I started out doing this without a core wire and my results were good, but when I went to shape them I kept having spacing issues, which I know means I didn’t get my twist tight enough, so I decided to add the core wire and it completely got rid of that problem.

Do you quench right out of oven or do you let air cool? So you put in kiln and let it do a one hour ramp to 575 and hold for another hour? Thank you for your time. George
@ZinkSterling
@ZinkSterling 3 года назад
I have a SKUTT Firebox and it works great, I just bought one I could afford at the time that had a digital kiln setter. As for the kiln hardening process, first you need to anneal the silver, rio recommends holding the piece at around 1200°F for an hour then quenching to get a full anneal. Then ramp hold at 575 and let the icee stay in the kiln till it cools to room temp on its own. If you cool it too quickly it will lose any hardness and be mostly annealed again. I usually start the hardening cycle right before bed so it’s cooled by morning.

@ZinkSterling
@ZinkSterling 10 месяцев назад
I’m not sure if a forge would work as I don’t have much knowledge on how they run, but if it can regulate temperature for the times required then it should. I have a propane burner I use sometimes, but that thing is basically all on or all off and it would not work.

I was wondering what gage wiers you where using?
@lindabanning140
@lindabanning140 3 года назад
Why is it necessary to put it in a kiln at 550 for an hour - or at all? Is it too brittle? This is really nice. Looking forward to trying it out. I understood it perfectly! Thanks for your generosity!
@ZinkSterling
@ZinkSterling 3 года назад
Putting it in the kiln isn’t because it’s brittle. It makes the sterling springy so it doesn’t get misshapen when you try to put it on and off. Some cuffs are pretty much soft and when you put them on you squeeze the sides together to make it fit your wrist better. Soft cuffs will eventually take a stress fracture from bending back and forth over a long period of time, where spring hardened metal flexes instead of bends, and does not get that stress fracture. Or at least not for a much much longer time.
