No viking wedding for us exactly for the reasons you described. So we made it our own. We got married in a remote nature reserve on an old bridge over an ancient stream. Our dogs were the ring bearers. After the ceremony we dined in a historical viking village and payed hommage to our ancestors at the viking age burial fields. All in the magic land of Scania, Sweden of course.

Good morning, Arith. Well said, the truth is just get married how you want can only be the real way. Don't be trapped into performing a ceremony just because you think that others will be impressed. It is your special day, so make it that, your day. This week, I was discharged from the hospital and only have to go to the local clinic once a week to get the dress changes. I am still waiting for the other hospital to treat the blood blockage in my leg. So I must be a patient with patience.

Hello my dear friend! Always happy to see your comment! Nowadays with social media networks it gets even more intense. Many people want to give a great show to the audience and the truly meaningful moments of each event in one's life gets lost and becomes banal, empty, just some other picture or video in a social media profile. Vikingmania is trending just as Celtomania was trending some decades ago. It ends up being just for show. I'm not going to lie I would love to have my own wedding in the woods, but I don't need anything fancy and I just want to enjoy the moment and pay attention to it as much as possible to keep it in memory. Good to know things are going as best as possible in your life and you keep on fighting my friend. Hopefully, next time we see each other, I'll be in a better psychological condition and we shall have a few pints :b all the best to you, my dear friend!

A historical viking wedding would surely require a Time Machine. Much cheaper to have a party with your favourite people there, if you were to ask me. Also I have to note the way you hit that "Ite" in shite was very Scottish, 10/10, no notes. Hope you are healing well Arith.

I had a neo-pagan oath ritual combined with Celtic and Norse Polytheistic themes for the more personal wedding ceremony between me, my wife, and a few witnesses. As for my family ceremony it was definitely a Celtic Christian type of wedding. I am part Irish and knowing my family it was OK to do a handfasting and ring exchange and have an aspect of calling the ancestors in spirit to witness, but we couldn't add too much Pagan aspects without making it upset the more conservative parts of the family. With that said there was no hiding the fact they knew there were a few Pagan underthemes in it but it was accepted and actually appreciated with my family.

Wonderful video! I've been mulling over wedding ideas for awhile, and I was considering if i should include some of these 'traditional' elements or not but you've pretty thoroughly debunked them, haha. But you're so right that everyone should just do what makes them happy. Plus I'm gay anyway, so it would never be a 'traditional' wedding anyway, regardless of cultural inspiration 😂 Anyway, my thought (so far) about what I might do for a wedding is that there's several Stave Church replicas in the United States, including one in Minnesota (where my partner is from) that was built with minimal modern tech and with the dragon head decorations being carved entirely by hand by the guy who led the project! My partner is Christian, and I'm pagan (The Norse gods I practice with I know best, but I definitely wouldn't call myself a Norse pagan exclusively, the roots of my spirituality come the most from nature, and I also honor some Irish gods), but we love each other and that's the thing we are far and away the most certian of when it comes to powerful forces that act on this world. Plus, his spirituality is very important to me, even if we have some pretty broad theological disagreements; He was the first person I ever knew who had actually *studied* the bible in conjunction with his beliefs, and more importantly wasn't a hypocrite like so many Christians prove to be. I trust him, that he has a connection to something valuable and positive for him, and that doesn't threaten or ostracize me, so even if I'm not Christian I still love and accept my partner. And he loves and accepts me, and trusts me that I'm on the right spiritual path for myself. So, anyway, it feels like a good middle ground for us to be married in a Stave Church. They were made to be Christian churches, but they also wouldn't have come to exist without the pagan cultural past that preceded the people who built them. Plus, most of the US replicas operate as learning institutions rather than churches with regular service, so that also feels more spiritually neutral and open to interpretation of meaning and significance from the experience (which I think is good for guests who may have feelings of faith and spirituality that differ from our own) We're also considering broadly doing a sort of 'ren faire theme' where people can dress up like they would for ren faire, or as any fantasy character they like! I love cosplay and it would be super fun to be like 'Oh such and such character was at my wedding' when it's someone I know dressed up. I'm also thinking of hiring a Jack Sparrow impersonator, just because I think it would be very silly and entertaining for the guests 😂 Anyway thank you to whoever got this far and decided to hear me ramble about my wedding plans!

in finnic traditions much before the introduction of rings they exchanged many other things.. (probably bodily fluids is the oldest form of exchange). you could say that the wedding was only one of the many trips that the suitor made to the maiden´s home, always bringing with him some gifts (like food or pelts). basically it was to show that he could actually support a family :) however if you managed to find a girl closer by then you probably just moved to your own tent at some point (they were crazy practical, as opposed to romantic). not everyone was that lucky of course, hence all the different customs to help a family become a reality (kin members acting as spokespersons, all that). and no they didn´t steal the girls, that´s the enemy tribes who did that kind of stuff.. even there you have to question the practical aspects of it all.. ever tried carrying these country girls or "dwarven girls" as they´re called in myths.. damn they´re heavy, big bones!

Morning Arith, I agree weddings are a commodity now. People pay thousands for a dress and a cake 🤷. Is there any evidence on Sami 'weddings'? Back to natural relationships and companionships for life, without the Christian pomp. 😊

@ArithHärger 22 дня назад
Good morning my friend! Well, social media has its downsides to these things. People want to flex it online and forget to enjoy the moment. People do pay a lot for appearances. And that's a good question btw, on Saami weddings. For now, I have no idea. I will look into it! Cheers!

Scandinavian weddings were arranged by an agreement between men. A woman's (or girl's) father would be approached by a man or the man's male representatives to ask for his daughter in marriage. If the arrangement was profitable or socially or politically expedient for the woman's father, he might agree to it. A bride price (an amount of goods or silver or livestock paid by the groom to the bride's family) would be set, and the father would be responsible for providing the dowry (the valuable goods that the woman would bring to the marriage and which she could reclaim if divorced). The woman or girl was rarely, if ever, consulted or asked for her agreement to the arrangement. Love, romance, and even sexual attraction was not a prerequisite for a marriage - it was all about building social and political bonds between families of equal power and social status. Marriages almost never took place between families of different social status. Extramarital sex was not forbidden for men, with the proviso that illegitimate children would not inherit except in special circumstances. The only freedom women had was to seek divorce through appeal to the Althing through her father, brothers, or other male relative, and she had to have one of a limited number of "legitimate" reasons. Men could divorce simply by declaring it in front of assembled witnesses. The wedding itself consisted of days of feasting, and was concluded by the witnessing of the groom having sex with the bride to seal the agreement. There was apparently no other special "blessing" by an officiant or any religious ceremony or blessing until the coming of Christianity. Christian marriages were also basically an arranged social alliance between families for centuries. The only difference was that it had to be blessed by a priest or celebrated with a church ceremony. Romantic marriages self-arranged between equally consenting partners as we know it today is a wholly modern invention.

Why call it "Viking" and not "Norse or Nordic" wedding? "Viking" is an activity. Norse/Northmen are the people, consisting of ( roughly ) the Danes, the Swedes and the Norwegians + the Baltics and Iceland. And those people went "viking", meaning hop on a boat to trade & raid. It might be nitpicking but if we want to teach people something let's get started with the rather obvious.
@nicolasnamed
@nicolasnamed 22 дня назад
The short answer is capitalism, the long answer is to pop culture (Read: Americans) 'viking' and 'Norse' are interchangeable, and therefore in the common parlance, with viking being the more recognizable of the two. I assume Arith wants this video to reach people like that, and so for algorithmic and communication reasons, it serves the purposes of education better overl to use the word people know and is saturated in pop culture, rather than the most academically correct description. The inaccurate 'image' of these weddings are marketed as 'viking' and not 'Norse', which is what I mean by capitalism, btw.
