"We can't for you. The angels are already here. Can't you see them? ... Can't you see them?"
I can't help crying about him. I think like all of you. It was so unexpected and strange. I'm so sad because of his death. He was an amazing character from beginning to end. He is a great son of war and a man of his faith. I will never forget him.
I hope you enjoy the video guys!

Triskan Good person, pretty stupid though, especially when compared with his father. His death was weird though, kinda seems as they are rushing it, I think they shouldve done it in a different way, and let Aethulred be king after him, but after a few defeats against the heathen army, he dies from his wounds and than the strategic battles between Ivar and Alfred start.

I started out disliking him a lot. Especially when he attacked Ragnar’s settlement during the 3rd season. But he soon redeemed himself into becoming the silent hero of the show. He made me want to support the Saxons as much as the Vikings and showed the great side of himself by accepting Alfred and being a forgiving husband. He always took the brunt of pain and sorrow as a man of duty and was always unlucky but he endured and prospered . He would have been a great king.

And why is that? Don't tell me it's historically incorrect or something similar... or that after the death of Ragnar the show went south. The truth is they did a very good transition form Ragnar to he's sons. Ubbe is like a reacarnation of he's father and the show just keeps getting bigger and bigger battles.
@Matt-dl5zu
@Matt-dl5zu 6 лет назад
Ragnar left a big hole in the show. They can try and recreate the character but Travis Fimmel was a great actor and there are not many on his level. Losing Fimmel, Linus Roache and now Moe Dunford has affected the show. There are no great actors in the English story anymore. And Hirst is getting a little lazy in his writing. Bjorn's escape from the desert is an example of this. What the hell was that? And letting Heahmond live? "Maybe the gods know why". That is a lazy explanation. We all know he is going hook up with Lagertha and that is the reason.

Always loved how Aethelwulf was never portrayed as a master swordsman or duellist like the Lothbrok children and the other major characters. He's a scrapper, a brawler, fighting with every fiber of his being. He epitomises the real brutality that combat would entail in that time period. And it's his iron resolve and his faith that pushed him on. Unsung hero of the series.

This video got me so emotional! At the beginning I thought he was just a fanatical douchebag who would die soon but boy did he grow to be one of the best and most underrated characters ever in the series. He obviously had his flaws , which mostly stemmed from his desperation for his father's approval but it struck me how despite the way he was treated by everyone namely his father and wife Aethelwulf proved himself as a strong warrior , a good father to his son and to a boy he knew wasn't his and a complex but chivalrious fellow who tried to what was best for his family and kingdom. His death and the way it happened dissapointed me but considering the sad life he led at least he was allowed a peaceful death with the two people he loved the most by his side. Now he can finally rest. RIP King Aethelwulf.
@ranialian8537

This tribute pulled at every single one of my heartstrings regarding this wonderfull character. I cried like a baby! I know there's a lot of outrage at the moment because of the manner of his death. Aethelwulf swat the bee impulsively, when there were alternatives, and suffered the concequences. As the Northmen come in like hornets, a warrior king is not what england needs to survive. You could say his death was reduced to mere symbolism but I can't see how that diminishes his character in any way. Ragnar, for instance, didn't become a legend because of the way he died but because of the way he lived. I can see why people would have prefered to see a great warrior like Aethelwulf fittingly die in a glorious battle but, in the end of the day, Aethelwulf was still human. He did deserve better, though, both in life and in death and I was shocked to see him go. *This is one of my favorite edits from you, you did Aethelwulf justice* (someone had to 😅)

I find it quite fitting. Not all kings die in battle as an honorable sacrifice. Life, especially one without modern day medicine, often screws you over. First 2 minutes i thought iĺl be crying for him, because all of his life he served well his country, family and especially his father. All he wanted was a love from his father. Again great choice of music. I really love this one and i am so sad they killed him so fast. He had so much great to show. And the final scene with his epic speech was incredible. I am really glad you did this for him, hope that actor who played him will see this. Again beautiful story.

Aethelwulf is a great character he is loyal to his father to a fault even if he knew he could die on the mission his father sent him on, he went from being to someone you hate to someone you feel sorry for he was a good man surrounded by snakes

A beautiful tribute to one of my favourite characters, and perhaps the most respectable of all. Everything Aethulwulf ever did was for his country and his father. The true hero of the show.

They way they killed this character was not good... I understand that the director want us to understand that god can kill us in any form, but i insist it was not the way.

Aethelwulf was so much a better father than Ecbert for sure. He, prime Ragnar and Charles were the best parents in this show.

Who would've thought THIS guy would go on to become my favourite character in the show... his reign as king may pale before Ecbert's, but Ecbert can never hope to be half a man and father that Aethelwulf turned out to be in the end.

Damn! That was fast. This was a better death than Micheal Hirst gave him. I didn't cry when he died because I was too angry and pissed at they way he died and the way his death was written but I did cry when I saw this. Once again, another masterpiece. Those of us who come to love this character, thank you for this. As a character, he had so much left to explore.

Without the noble nature of Aethelwulf, Alfred would not have been raised to be such a fine, judicious, people loving, God fearing King. They all play apart of the formation of Britain's history and it all started with the tenacity of Alfred's father to do what is right

There are two meanings here. The first is God's man. He was always faithful to God, even stronger than the priests. And the second - yes is Ecbert :D

Symbolically speaking you could see that, as Kings in Europe were seen as God's chosen, and that Kings of antiquity were seen as their God's chosen vessel. Fitting when you consider England's recent conversion to Christianity and it having to confront it's past in the form of Ragnar's northmen.

He chose self flallegation when his arrogant father slapped him for getting mad at his wife..who cheated on him with a "man of god". (Athlestan was wrong for that, no matter how much we loved him.) His father was despicable. He's flawed. But he's more human and better than every (arguably) other character in the show. I realized it over my fourth or fifth watch through.

The show killed Ragnar, Athelstan, Ecbert and Aethelwulf too early. For me , these were the gems that ran the show. Ivar was a wasted potential of a character.
