In the first stage the 12 participating teams face each other in a round-robin group, for a total of 22 matches. At the end of the regular season, the teams are divided into two groups: the first six will compete for the title and qualification in European competitions; the last six, however, fight not to relegate. In both groups the teams face each other in a one-way group, for a total of 5 matches. In the relegation group the last two teams will be relegated directly in 1. deild karla.
