Asking, "what is the meaning of life?", is not the same as asking, "what is the meaning of your individual life?". What is the meaning of physics, chemistry, and biology? What is the meaning of your experience as a form of biological awareness? These are two questions that exist in different scopes and reference different things. They are in no way the same however similar.

I voted against the Meaning of LIfe video in a previous poll, stating that so many others have done it and it's talked to death....but you have presented it in a much better way than others. Well done!!

Man, I just HAVE to read up on Frankl, now. Also, I am eternally surprised by just how many existential problems Jung was able to tackle in his lifetime. Truly one of the greatest minds of the twentieth century.

So many wills. Freud: will to pleasure, Adler: will to power, James: will to believe, Frankl/Camus: will to meaning, Mäinlander: will to die. They are all influenced on some level by Schopenhauer, Nietzsche, and Kierkegaard. Mäinlander was a contemporary of Kierkegaard, I think, and whose writings influenced, some argue directly, Nietzsche. Anyway, I think as a compatibilist, free will is reconciled to determinism through evolution and emergence. I think the Stoics did this, and perhaps Darwin, Hume, and Daniel Dennett. There's a danger of denying essences, especially biological ones, by replacing it with others, especially environmental ones, in arguments for libertarian free will, which is something that Kropotkin, Skinner, Hayek, Descartes, Kant, Nozick, Chisholm, Robert Kane, Thomas Reid, and the late David Graeber did, whereas Dennett, Pigliucci, William James, and Chomsky say that infinite possibilities can arise from finite choices. There is weirdly some overlap between the incompatibilists and compatibilists, especially with Dennett's reference to deliberative indeterminism, which Pigliucci does as well to update the Stoic hégemonikon with modern neuroscience esp. with the recent update to Libet's experiment thus refuting the original conclusions of absolute neurobiological determinism.

One of the most amazing implementations of these psychological truths is from a guy who wouldn't know anything about it but gained it as a result of his work. David Goggins himself, the quote you expressed from Frankl perfectly sums up how he thinks. "the GAP between what ONE IS and what one SHOULD BECOME". His book and life is the most solid psychological conquest for the 'meaning of life' I've ever read and he knows nothing about psychology. I think Jordan Peterson said once that there's a clear delineation from being intelligent and being wise and he is the pure embodiment of that presuppositon.

The meaning of an individual life, gives dignity to human being and indeed is their very personal task in life (like Socrates said: "The unexamined life is not worth living") . Frankl stressed the freedom of man, that we can always change the situation, and where we cannot change it, we are still free to change our viewpoint on it (little bit like the stoics). The german book is translated"... still say yes to life" written by the man who survived Holocaust as the only family member and found his meaning in life. His work is a lighthouse to everyone.

I have one correction, though: though I disagree with Freud in that he did away with individual needs entirely, i think that saying that he believed in a «will to pleasure» is a misconception. It is moreso «a will to whatever leads to the continuation of the species»

The Meaning Of and Reason For existence represent two complementary ways of understanding our world-the why and the how. Meaning expresses a condition of wholeness-of permanence and continuity-while Reason expresses a condition of fragmentation-of temporality and discreteness. This conflict of quality can only find harmony with the intellect, which works by putting things in categories, if we should be able to define meaning as a consequence of reason, or reason as a consequence of meaning. That is, we are simply unable to conceive of the Meaning-Reason construct as the unified entity that it actually is-we divide it into two. Only by looking beyond both science and spirituality can we perceive the world as one.

I agree, but my answer is more concise. If we can agree that life can be defined as a short period of time in the universe where we have consciousness, then also agree that consciousness simply means to be a receiver, interpreter, and transmitter for information, than the meaning of life is to learn and apply. If anyone can see a discrepancy in this, please let me know for I am unable to find one.

I am by no means an expert on the subject, I am currently studying about it, but as I watched I thought that it was rather carelass to state about such a complex word as Logos with that ease. Stating that it just means "meaning", it is debatable the exact parallel with english, some people link it to discourse but I'd even go forth and say it's not "just" discourse, but rather, that Logos is the articulation of meaning, and not just meaning, Logos is an universal principle that articulates. So it could even be seen biologically as the "thing" that causes the proper order in organic matter to be articulated so that it is able to "create" or become articulated into life. It's a complex word with tremendous meaning.

I think Camus would have been fascinating to watch debate on RU-vid if he'd been around in our day. Such a character. A bit like Hitchens, but not as strident.

What you should know about Victor Frankl: As director, Frankl was given the opportunity to conduct experimental brain surgeries on suicidal patients. Reticent over the years about these experiments, he did not mention them in his original 1973 autobiographical statement. 27 He did describe the research in a private 1981 interview with Canadian filmmaker Tom Corrigan, but claimed the information "might be of interest ... but it could not be of use." 28 Frankl described these experiments in a short article published in 1942, and later, in 1995 (two years before his death), in his autobiography, Was nicht in meinen Büchern steht (published in 1997 in English as Recollections: An Autobiography). 29 In the latter, Frankl claimed that although he had no training in neurosurgery and "[Viennese brain surgeon] Professor Schönbauer did not even allow me to look on when he performed brain surgery," he found himself nevertheless "able to conduct the surgery." Frankl also admitted that the "primary surgeon Reich had refused to undertake the surgeries." 30 When, in order to avoid deportation to concentration camps, patients had overdosed on sleeping pills and subsequently had been given up for dead by other doctors, Frankl felt justified in attempting relatively novel brain surgery techniques. First, "some injections intravenously ... and if this didn't work I gave them injections into the brain ... into the Cisterna Magna. And if that did not work I made a trepanation, opened the skull ... inserted drugs into the ventricle and made a drainage so the drug went into the Aquaeductus Sylvii.... People whose breathing had stopped suddenly started breathing again." But he "could only keep them alive for twenty-four hours, no longer." 31 Frankl's drugs of choice were the amphetamines Pervitin and Tetrophan. These ethically questionable experiments could be viewed as bordering on collaboration with the Nazis. Not only was Frankl's research supported by the Nazis, but his actions stood outside a vision of Jewish communal solidarity.

Logos doesn't mean exactly " meaning" in ancient greek but rather " discourse " .

This video closely lost out to the vote by 2%, while still a loss it was essentially a draw, the margins were that thin, but well give it to the video that won with its clearly less appealing characters, not withstanding Nietzsche. I suspect a few voted for what they thought was the more intellectual topic, but ended up only watching the more emotional/spiritual one. Mankind has conquered everything but is not satisfied. Sometimes I think we'd be better off annihilating ourselves in one go, but we'd never trust ourselves enough for it. Let the earth start over, with other interesting life-expressions.

Understanding that humans have no ultimate meaning or purpose doesn't automatically lead to nihilism. Why do people make this assumption?

the meaning of life in a nutshell enjoyment is one of many existential existence meanings all leading back to life and death spoiler it's the meaning of life So the meaning of life is the infinite cosmic events infinitely perpetuating the creation of planets those planets creating life take earth humans make humans animals make animals and trees make 🌲 .etc and without death there would be an oversaturation of life itself the meaning of existential existence is the same being a doctor or soldier or just a simple editor like me effects myself or someone else by extending or shorting life with every action you or I take all quantum physics really even does is act like the Glu that holds this and every other infinite sub set of reality together think of this one as its own place with infinite sub sets of its own now imagine every single thought you have has its own version of that if broken down proves the existence of god budda Mohammed the power rangers and everything in-between starting from least to greatest in power scale I love knowing this because I not only lean towards life but I also know every show every game everything you see whatch or think about is something that is happening in real time for someone somewhere at this very second it makes tv and videos games so much more fun not to mention everything is about life and death don't believe me well take a human there body is constantly living and dying at the same time blood cells down to the atomic level it all dies and regenerates untill the body is no more and the energy that is in it is displaced into another reality your minds constantly learning new information even just thinking Wich you do all day every day even when asleep pushes out the old info and gives you a new perspective in some way for better or worse the meaning of life in this reality and all realitys have only one constant life and death and a never ending rollercoaster of living and dieing throughout all reality well if you read this far let me say thank for understanding the meaning of life and death and I hope this will bring some if any closer for those that can't see the big picture because life has so many little pieces stay safe and as always.. see you later space cowboys 🤠🐕🚀

I find Frankl s meaning contingent.

And if we say that husband/wife is not died, but wass unfaithful, then by that same narrative logic you suppost to be happy becose that is not you who wass unfaithful and createt suffering for your unfaithful, but beloved partner... But this is absurd. Its sounds like some sort of Christcuckery or something similar. Right way to act is to be sad for your dead wife/husband, but not to long, becose you suppost to live life and your dead life partner wish you to do such a thing and on cheating case you suppose to leave your partner and break your relationship from respected of one's good thing that you bouth haved.

There is no meaning. It's a trial to see if you will do something to offend or blame God. All we really are is livestock. And its said in the afterlife there will be no marriage. Seems our women will be taken from us as well.

If the meaning of life is what we chose then it's subjective and ontologicaly meaningless it would be kin to religions,gender roles, fiat money mere constructions that have no basis other then our minds and if determinism holds true then can we really choose?
