Village Life in Nicaragua’s Poorest Region: Northern Autonomous Zone

I wanted to explore a very remote village in the middle of nowhere in Nicaragua. My plan was to head to a small village that I saw on Google Maps called "El Toro". The villages in the center of Nicaragua are far off the tourist trail so this was undiscovered territory.
What was life like? How much did they make? What interesting relics could I find?
I started out my journey in a city called Rio Blanco, which is right in the center of the country. Then took a chicken bus to the rural countryside where I brought my foot down into El Toro. I walked around a bit and met a family who showed me around....the hospitality of Nicaraguans.

unreal how friendly they are. They haven't lost faith in each other as we have further north. Trusting, generous, humble, all of the virtues we have long given up. It might only be $500 for a cow, but unless you know how to care for it in Nicaragua, it would be a sick/dead cow before you know it. If farming or doing ANYTHING to make money was easy in poor country, they wouldn't be poor.

If this is the poorest region in Nicaragua, then those people over there are very rich my friend. I can imagine how you struggle to pay your monthly bills and loan installments 😂 They know how to sew the clothes , They know how to grow food, They are able to breed the animals, They know that human nature is to wake up with first sunlight. What do you know my "Rich" friend? When is your next week rota? When will be your next brake to run in the toilet? In what Pub you'll go this Friday night to get pissed. Yes my friend, they are poor and you are very rich . But I will tell you something my friend, If the richness is measured by "wealth" (how much money do we have) Then I will be poor and happy ✌️

I ve stayed in a much poorer house. I was glad to have my hammock and my hot shower system.! This is far from being a miserable life style. And they eat pretty healty compare to industrial countries where people are feed with shit. I don t know why they have to start the day so early. Anywhere in the world, i think, it s better to have little money in the country side than in a big city. I don t beleive the $4-5 $ a day salary. Unless maybe the job include everything .

@@mathieutallard6328 … and yet, that’s the way humans have lived for most of their existence. Whenever we started to migrate, there was usually some trauma behind it. People don’t generally pick up everything and leave unless they are forced to do so by war, oppression, hunger, or some other extreme condition. They seem well adapted to where they are and content enough with their lives to share with a visitor. When people living in relative plenty feel the need to cross the horizon constantly, there’s usually some restlessness under the urge.

How much do you think they would accept, without insulting them, for 2 nights stay? Just to help them a bit! Thank you!

When I visited Nicaragua more than 30 years ago, I was blown away by how many of the strangers I struck up a conversation with invited me to spend the night at their place within a half hour. Friendliest, most hospitable people I’ve ever met, and the quality seems to cut across classes.

@@PaulDilla they were hard times even for people you wouldn’t call “poor”. It was in the waning days of the first Sandinista regime. Whenever people complain about the current “runaway” single-digit inflation in the United States, I just roll my eyes-Nicaraguans in the late ‘80’s were dealing with quintuple-digit inflation. Between the time I arrived in August 1988 and the time I left in August 1989, they had started stamping over the “10” on the Carlos Fonseca notes with “10,000” rather than taking them out of circulation.

what are you talking about? I've been a volunteer for years in animal rescue centers in South and Central America and terrible cases like this are the reason why those shelters and rehabilitation centers exist.
