Brunei is not what we expected, as first time travellers to this country. This is the largest water village in the world and it's name is Kampong Ayer. We feel lucky to have been able to visit this unique place with so many houses in stilts and to roam around the jungle of Brunei.

Their Kampung Ayer is an amazing system of it's own. Sewage, clean water supply. They also have their own Fire department, Police station, Schools, Medical facility.. and of course, restaurants and grocery stores.

Wow, what an amazing exploration at Kampung Ayer. Some of the houses there are very beautiful and the walk paths are very nice too. Absolutely love the vibes there...so peaceful and calm !! Yeah, agree that this kampung can be turned into a touristy place. Again, thanks for bringing us along, Mike GG.

Tell them Michael. We the Bruneians general public have voiced our suggestions in relation to the improvement of tourism opportunities in Kg Ayer to the authorities but met with bureaucracy and "no budget" excuses, which is pretty ridiculous considering Brunei's GDP per capita. Anyway, thanks for your great opinions which shamefully should have been the same opinions possessed by the people involved in our country's tourism board.

2:18 that’s the sultan’s palace! The biggest palace in the world. The palace is usually open for public during Eid Fitr (Islamic festive), from 2nd to 4th Syawal every year. You can meet the sultan & royal family and shake hands with them. They’re serving variety of foods and goodies for the guests. Edit: the palace named Istana Nurul Iman.

Ayer are actually an old way Malay write if we go to old malay book or old news paper we can read all the old writing it will be lot of fun because they also got (') because it is like a direct copy from Jawi (Malay Arabic writing) that why it a common for old Malay speak in "bahasa Melayu baku" Nowadays (in Malaysia) we used a modern Malay writing (the upgrades version). Ayer become Air.. For me.. the old way Malay write is a lot more easier for newbie to understand how it really pronounce.

Kampong Ayer has historically been Brunei's main settlement; for centuries it has been the de facto capital of the Brunei Empire, especially the social and economic center, and also during Brunei's British imperialist period extended to early. The current name "Kampong Ayer" is an outdated Roman spelling of the Malay word "Kampung Air", which literally means "water village". However, the old spelling version has been retained and is still used as the primary name of the place. As an important historical and cultural heritage of Brunei, the survival of Kampong Ayer in modern times has received more and more attention. This is due to the factor of residents emigration and relocation to land. The overall population has been decreasing over the past few decades, from an estimated 28,000 in 1981 to 13,000 in 2011. Declining population, coupled with busy modern lifestyles, is threatening the survival of kampong customs and traditions. al. It also eroded residents' sense of community. You can further visit the many Kampong Ayer located in Sabah/Sarawak and see their many differences in the sense of community diversity (Chinese, Malay and Bumiputera).

Secondly yes during after the incident government did try to build up something new make it more attractive for attraction tourist but here the main problem some local old folks don't want to move out n don't want water village to be moderate by government..it already been plan many years ago..as you can see there lots of empty House left n most the original locals kg Ayer no more staying there..few of those staying there not local ..n the new development Houses bulid on the burning spot it part of government project it a housing estate giving local ppl to own a house with low payment depends on your salary...not only in kg Ayer but almost all district sultan had build houses for his ppl to own a house..
