Americans have vacation homes that they only stay in once a year or so. Clearly, to have a mansion, you're doing way better than the average person, which is typical for a lot of Igbo business men. Investing in your homeland is a great idea! It's wonderful for families to have a luxurious experience when they are in the village. It is also part of building generational wealth. Praying to have mine soon.
@lichi1244eva
@lichi1244eva 2 года назад
I agree that it is important to invest in your village. That is what we should do. However I respectfully submit that your comparison between Americans and their vacation homes and our homes in the village misses a very important point: INCOME GENERATION and RESALE. Vacation homes in most other places can generally go on Airbnb when not in use so the owners can make money. Also, they can resell the home if or when they choose. That is not really the case in our villages, many of which don't have consistent electricity, adequate Healthcare or amenities and thus are not vacation options. Our homes are our permanent ties to our land.

@@dera_giselle I can tell you that at a certain age, most owners of those houses won't be able to walk up the flight of steps up stair conveniently. And I know for a fact that those of them who live abroad are not likely to return home definitely anytime soon to live in their houses. Furthermore, most children born and being raised abroad tend not to be much interested in "country homes", that's if they are interested in returning home at all. A modest well-built house is better than building a mansion for rodents and reptiles....or even village petty thieves.

For those close to an urban centre its a good idea..for those abroad..nobody is coming back to live anywhere..we have no healthcare..when they get old they will live abroad or in an urban centre where they can get access to a good hospital..until we have electricity and good amenities in villages..few will ever return to live in the village..and will bank on their city properties for rental income as the village house cannot generate much income..its good for personal development..ego..the comfort of a resting place..weddings and funerals and other village festivities..

Unfortunately it doesn't help infrastructure or beautifying the village when the homes fall into disrepair due to neglect or lack of use. Our climate is warm and humid and our homes need to be aired out frequently and be lived in to reduce mold and infestation. Sure they're big and fancy for those few weeks while we are there but I posit that the infrastructure improvement begins with adequate power, Healthcare in close proximity, schools and fewer bandits, thieved and touts. The last time I was back home in 2019 the kidnappings were particularly bad. I'm going back in Feb and pray the situation has improved.

1. It’s a show of wealth and comfort 2. Igbos love home, they pride in their roots and want home to be a haven 3. It is believed that they’ll retire and eventually be laid to rest at home when they die. Burial ceremonies are huge in Igbo land, when there is no good place to entertain visitors, when one lives in a mansion in the city and country home looks unkempt, it is regarded as shameful 4. When Igbos come back for festivities, they need somewhere that can accommodate everyone. Remember that 4-5 families may come back to one mansion most of the time. Lots of reasons why we do what we do

@mrbennett
@mrbennett 2 года назад
It doesn't matter where you're buried. The dead don't live in houses. You build your best house where you will retire and spend your old age. It's also smart to build in your village in case there is another ethnic war where you live. You have a home to retreat to and something for your children to inherit if you lose everything you have in other parts of the country.

@@tombimashri8149 it doesn’t matter if the man is buried there or not. While there’s no law against that, the entire village will be against it. @RealityStand
@RealityStand 2 года назад
@@tombimashri8149: We have culture. If the man died and has a male child automatically the first male child becomes the father so there is not need for the woman to remarry but can have a boyfriend but if she decided to marry then she will never ever bring the new gold-digger-man to inherit the house of the first husband. The house belongs to the first born of the woman. If her children are only girls before the husband died, it is normal for her boyfriend to pregnant her and she will give birth to male in the house and the male will inherent the house. As long as the money paid on her head is not refunded she remains the wife of the dead man so it doesn't matter who pregnanted her the child belongs to the dead man. She may adopt male child or she can marry another woman (not lesbian marriage) the new woman will be married in the name of the dead husband, the main target is to bring a male child to bear the name of the dead husband and inherit the property. It is also right if she marry a woman who has young children without husband (meaning a woman who got pregnant without marriage and no man claimed responsibility) so once she is married, the children automatically got adopted into the family and takes the name of the late husband and the first male child will inherit the property of the man at last when the big mother died. All the female children has no right to inherit their father's house because their right is in their husband's house so they are expectrd to marry and go to their husband and build a home.

I think most people are building their homes in the villages across Africa and it's a good thing. I know in South Africa that is what we do and every December we go home to the village for Xmas and obviously not big houses like Naija pips as most people there seem to be really rich. It's not a waste at all because in the village there are no property rates to pay, so once you retire you need a place to enjoy yourself in the village and also have a place of your own should anything happen to you because in town once you don't pay for municipality services or don't pay your bond - your house can be repossessed and you will left homeless. Every person should make sure they have their own plot in the village oohh don't let your mind be colonised foolish to think being in the village is backward

While it is good to build mansions in our home town for the reasons stated, we should remember the the things we need to ensure good and safe development, and not make the mistakes that most communities have made, e.g a good and well planned drainage system, not to close to the road, that is you must not build you fence from exactly where your land starts. Ha ha ha ha Dera, we Bamileke people of Cameroun have the same problem! We build extremely expensive mansion in our villages...they are all sitting empty with expensive furniture inside!

Aside from the reasons you gave, you can't be living large in city and at home have nothing to show. Some also want to live comfortably wherever they go. Even foreigners own houses in places they don't live but only visit on vacation like beach houses. Some people live in those houses free of charge in exchange for keeping it clean plus security. A lot youth corners enjoy such when posted to rural areas only problem is social amenities and opportunities hence the quest for city posting. Some uncompleted ones maybe due to financial set-back,death even disputes. Igbo always have home in their hearts wherever they go, we always come home. Igbo kwenu. Nice video .I enjoyed watching this.

@@dera_giselle I am building a 3 bed room house in my village in Uganda and some friends thought I was wasting money. I feel vindicated after watching your video because my house is very basic compared to these mansions. Building in the village supports village economy and provides employment. I mostly used local materials , I even bought cement from my local traders. Only the tiles did I get straight from the factory.

This is why Nigeria is what it's today spending money money on what you don't really use. Just like our today's politicians spending money on projects that are not useful to The people. To me to really develop your villages take City to that place by giving them modern day infrastructures. Good education, international business opportunity to local farmers and well equipped IT center to the younger minds. Thanks

The gossip used to be that people in good jobs in the cities or people in abroad are stupid because they don't have good houses in the village. Now the gossip is, why do they build mansions? It's a waist of money. Africans should start minding their business.

I can tell you right now, if you cannot live in a mansion in the city you can live in one in the village. Those who live in mansions do not have two heads. There is nothing wrong with building mansions in the village. Many lived in thatched houses when they were growing up. Now, they are grown and can afford to do so, its great to build mansions. The intent is not to compete, but improve living style, standards and contribute to village beautification. IGBOs, are hard working and wonderful people. Within them, you will find the good, the great and the ugly.

It is an igbo thing. Lol. And if i tell you that in the city or countries where we live, it is at most a two bedroom apartment but in our village we built mansions. Well as much some may frown upon such and or consider it waste of money, but before doing so let them try to learn about igbo people first and their culture. For me hey, is their money and can do whatever they wanna do with it. I believe is nice to make your village home more comfortable than anywhere else. I see nothing wrong about that. I have my too and rarely home. Hey it is part tradition part pride part whatever. ✌

Can I say that you use that write up to catch our attention. Nice job. Keep it up, because am struggling to build mine. Is compulsory thing I must do and I must do it in Jesus Name. Amen.

A lot of those houses are simply to show that the son of that land is successful. They are essentially monuments and currently an economic waste (who knows tomorrow?). Growing up, our parents dreamt of building mansions in the village that they will live in. Seeing their peers build mansions also puts a lot of pressure on them. However a lot of people living in the diaspora cannot live in the village. Poor health infrastructure, electricity issue, poor roads and insecurity. It’s better to use that money to educate and empower the village residents. This would create better value for the community and sustainable development. Culture can be scrutinized and changed. Don’t justify waste.
