We thank Db Schell for hosting my series "Villagers and Vagabonds" at the Green Kill Gallery. This time I am improvising with fellow guitarist David Nelson McCarthy.
Villagers and Vagabonds will be a (more or less) Monthly series featuring improvised music live in-person as well as live-streamed from the Green Kill Gallery, 229 Greenkill Ave, Kingston, NY. Villagers and Vagabonds will present an hour of freely improvised music with me and featured guests. The intent is to have little to no preconceived notions of what exactly will happen - no ‘set-list’ if you will.
My featured guest this time is guitarist David Nelson McCarthy, and I thank him for joining me for this adventure!
David Nelson McCarthy
David McCarthy is a lifelong musician who started singing in church choir at age 9. He started folk guitar at 12 and later studied classical and jazz guitar. He earned a BA in music from the University of Michigan, and later studied at Naropa Institute with jazz greats Jerry Granelli, Bill Douglas, Ralph Towner, and John Abercrombie. Currently living in Kingston NY, he is a member of the Woodstock, NY based soundpainting ensemble ‘Audiocanvas’ under the leadership of Steve Rust.
McCarthy is a co-founder and board member of the Hudson Valley Current, a community currency that works for abundance for all-our community, our businesses, and our families. He curates a jazz brunch series on Saturdays at Tilda's, a community restaurant, store, and gathering place associated with the Current..
He also has a blog on economic justice: substack.com/@..., and is the author of the book Civil Endowment -- The Transformation of Economic Power.
Rick Warren
Originally from Kingston, NY, Hudson-based Rick Warren has been deeply involved in the improvisational and experimental music scene fostered by renowned vibraphonist Karl Berger at the Creative Music Studio in Woodstock, NY. It was Berger’s chance visit to Rick’s high school music theory class that led him to become a regular participant in twice-yearly workshops held at CMS, an international hot bed of improvisational music performance and education founded in 1971 by Berger, Ingrid Sertso and Ornette Coleman. Rick is well known for his soundscape compositions using his guitar and a variety of electronic sound sources, all totally improvised with no preconceived ideas, presented live many Sunday evenings from his Facebook page. Rick, or “Lightnin’ Rick” the name erroneously gifted to him in High School during a pizza lunch, has most recently joined the Hudson Valley Psych-Surf Rock outfit “spaceheater”, headquartered in the Woodstock/Saugerties area. Further adventures include Folk-Rock performances and recordings in the aptly named duo “Rick and Marilyn”. Rick is often called upon to perform with Gus “The Sultan of Sonic Soul” Mancini and the improvisational “Sonic Soul Awekestra”. Warren is also involved with the Woodstock-based soundpainting ensemble Audiocanvas, led by bassist Steve Rust and captured on the 2019 disc Some Bad Western.
