Harold was also a great practical joker...He bought a mansion in the Hollywood Hills (The famed "Pickfair" mansion, that was owned by silent film stars, Douglas Fairbanks, and his wife, Mary Pickford.) On the grounds was a guest house...He would sometimes throw wild parties..When someone got crazy blackout drunk, they would carry the person out to the guest house to sleep it off..The person woke up completely disoriented....Harold had all the furniture nailed to the ceiling, upside down!

Harold Lloys was a comedy genius and a daredevil extraordinaire. No safety news. No back ups. You fall, you get seriously hurt or killed. He had balls the size of mountains and a smile as wide as an ocean.

In 1919 Harold was holding a prop bomb with a lit fuse. He didn't know it had a real charge inside. It blew off his right thumb and forefinger. If you look closely, you can see the prostehtic fingers in the glove on his right hand. He did all his amazing thrill pictures like Safety Last with half his right hand missing. He never let on, because he didn't want his fans focusing on his injury. An amazing genius of comedy.

Harold Lloyd lost the thumb and index finger on one hand in 1919 (four years before this was filmed) when a real bomb was mistaken for a prop. He wore a prosthetic glove in all his films after that. The close shots used a set piece placed on the top of the building he was climbing, so while he was actually several stories up, if he fell, it would only be a few feet. However, as another poster has pointed out, the long shots used no stunt doubles, no safety equipment, and no trick photography, made all the more incredible that he did it all with a deformed hand. it's been a long time since I've seen this. It is a classic piece of film-making. I'm glad the guys enjoyed it so much.

It was believed for many years Harold Lloyd did all of his own stunts, but in Safety Last! Though he did many or perhaps most of the climbing scenes, Bill Strother, a steeplejack and stunt performer, performed more distant shots. There was also a building facade set placed atop a real building for certain scenes, to lessen the fall distance while filming Lloyd. He was a brilliant performer, however. When you're as big a star as he was at the time, you don't just climb buildings and throw caution to the wind.

There's a behind the scenes making of for this movie, building sets and explaining how stunts were done in those days. They built the clock on the roof of another building, Harold was only a few feet off the ground, they used forced perspective to make it appear as a real tower. Jackie Chan tried the same stunt in Project A but it was a real tower, his fall was real as well and he did it twice. Jackie isn't allowed to do a lot of stunts in Hollywood movies, just his own fight scenes and wirework, in Hong Kong he did everything himself and trained his own stunt team who work on such films as the John Wick series.

Badsha's early dissection seemed naive until the conclusion. Wondering what the motive was for climbing was not a question for me when I first saw the movie about 60 years ago. That Badsha was provoked from the outset is testament to his powers of observation. Their analysis made my day.

This was fun to watch. I love that silent screen actor and have watched some of his work. It was fun to watch with these 3.

I watched a documentary on this movie and apparently all the distance shots were actually back-projections with the building being different ledge pieces of set. He was only about 6 feet off the ground with mattresses on the floor. That's not to say that he wasn't a magnificent acrobat, but the studio couldn't risk losing him.
@johnnhoj6749
@johnnhoj6749 Год назад
No back projection. The sets were built on top of a tunnel in Los Angeles with the real streets in the background. It was still dangerously high. The very wide shots were performed by stunt double Harvey Parry. as it was too much of a financial risk for the studio to let Lloyd do them, especially with his injured hand.
