Only because many take school for granted and do not know what it is to be without it. There is much we take for granted because of our prosperity, unfortunately. Many of us, even those in the lower middle class and within the poorer communities, we do not realize how close to kings we live compared to small villages miles from the nearest city. Most of us have never truly lived life without the luxury and technology we have at our finger tips. Most of us don’t know what it’s like to live without a refrigerator, without a phone, without ovens or washing machines or tv or electricity. Most of us don’t even know how to hunt game and gut an animal to prepare its meat for consumption. Most of us have never had to learn how or where to fetch fresh water in nature beyond a water bottle or drinking fountain or garden hose. Most of us might have never learned to grow our own gardens and raise crops to feed ourselves. Most of us may have no clue where or how to find and harvest the materials we need from plants and animals to tailor our own clothing, let alone, how to make clothes from scratch, or even sow a button onto a shirt. Most of us do not know what it is like to walk on foot for miles down country roads, hills, and utter wilderness, and have to sleep outside on the side of the road with nothing but the clothes on our backs before continuing to walk again the rest of the day for several days straight. Most of us have never considered how many of some of the most common, mundane, yet life-changing things we have came to be, or what humanity had to resort to before such simple things were invented: things like pencils, paper, dishes and utensils, containers, string, soap, even how to shower without a bathroom or relieving ourselves without a toilet or toilet paper. The average American usually has no clue how good they have it, how pampered we are here compared to many people around the world. Many may be even surprised to learn that there are still isolated tribes out there in the most cut-off parts of the world that still live in primitive small huts and rely on hunters and gatherers with nothing more than simple bows and arrows and stone knives.

@wizardsuth

Most antibiotics work by replacing chemicals in bacterial cell membranes. This weakens the membrane so that when the cell grows it ruptures and the cell dies. Viruses are not cells and therefore have no cell membranes. The only benefit to taking an antibiotic when you have a viral infection is to prevent secondary infection, e.g. pneumonia.

Bacteria reproduce through binary fission, which is a process where a single cell becomes two or more parts and then those parts generate into a separate entities. Viruses are not life as they do not reproduce on their own (also a few other reasons), but instead must replicate by using another organism's living cells. Mutations and copying errors occur in both, giving us variety, as in all lifeforms and pseudo-lifeforms.

Sarru asked an insightful question about where viruses come from. I can assure him that I have many friends with advanced degrees who don’t understand this. First, we need to understand that each type of cell is vulnerable to viruses that will only infect it and perhaps one or two other species. Even bacteria have their own viruses. Secondly, not all bacteria and viruses are harmful to humans and animals. (When I was a student at university many years ago, we practiced with harmless bacteria and observed how viruses infected them, killed many bacteria, but enabled some to survive. These days, microbiology students may do even more sophisticated experiments.) Thirdly, viruses don’t really “attack”. They are packages that certain cells will absorb, make copies of, and send out for other cells to do the same. The cells in our body will do this even when we don’t feel sick. Harmful viruses drive our cells to stop serving our body and only generate virus in large quantity. Eventually, the cells in our body produce enough virus that our body detects them as alien, and mounts an attack. That is when some of us feel symptoms like headache, fatigue, or fever. The majority of us don’t feel those symptoms and our cells produce just enough virus for us to breath out, spit out, or otherwise get on our skin to let another human (or sometimes, animal) to take up and continue the process of replication. This happens, ALL THE TIME. And like I said, for most viruses, we don’t even notice. Some people might be harmed or killed, but not enough to justify making vaccines that come with their own side effects. I hope this helps in our understanding. There is much more to say about the genetics of viruses and how they help us understand human genetics. The stuff my friends in virology and clinical epidemiology discovered in the past year will be in our children’s textbooks in the next decade.

15:10 That is a very good question... I do not know the answer to that, it is definitely a question worth exploring. The least I can say is: supposedly, all life came from the ocean, or some sort of body of stagnant water. According to scholars, the first forms of life were microscopic organisms. What I can say for sure though is, most of the cells in our body are born from the marrow of our bones. The thing about most bacteria and viruses is, they need a host to survive and multiply, or at least a humid, moist or wet place with a warm temperature with other micro organisms to feed on. For bacteria and viruses, the human body is like a paradise; the most perfect place to multiply and feed itself; and like thuggish leeches, or cutthroat pirates, they come in and try to hijack your body to feed itself. Bacteria and disease only care about itself, they doesn’t care what happens to its victim, so it kills your cells and steals the nutrients that your body worked hard to convert and feed your cells from the food you eat, until there is nothing left to nourish it, which would be when the host dies and decays. That is typical of bacteria. As for viruses, they technically don’t need anything to eat, in fact, the actual virus itself is technically not alive. But it still causes chaos in the body.

I would really love to see a travel show with these 3 men. They have open minds and hearts to new and different experiences. I would love to see them react to new places and things that are not shown on a screen.

The question about where viruses and bacteria come from is a really good question, but kind of complex. A video about evolution and then about symbiosis and co-evolution would maybe be a good place to start to answer that question.

I can't imagine the hard ship a family farm would suffer from a lockdown. They grow their own food, not for money profit. The farther out in the country you live the safer you will be. Bless you guys and keep safe!

Saru's question is a good one. My explanation is simplistic, that these microorganisms are just living things that reproduce and mutate (until I found out that scientists aren't in agreement on whether they consider viruses to be technically alive). And then you can engineer viruses in a lab... So the answer is more complex than my little answer.

I don't know if it's worth explaining to them how these microbes actually work or not. I'm just worried after seeing this they'd resort to some mad idea to get blood flowing again if they didn't have immediate access to a doctor.

It wonderful to hear how these people interpret in their own words what they are seeing. Just think of how people thousands of years ago interpreted & reasoned what they saw, how it worked & what caused it. Even as recently as 100 years ago.
