Beautiful women with interesting tattoos carrying their kids on their back while knitting with joy and dancing while four girls wearing uniforms carry colorful umbrellas hiding their faces from the camera, walking towards school. A few people stroll around the village. And the houses are simple bamboo huts with clothes hanging on the walls and a the odd pet that can be seen.
The Apatanis are a very interesting tribe found in the north-eastern part of India in the Ziro Valley, of Arunachal Pradesh.
Ziro is a small picturesque valley where the people worship nature (the sun and moon). They live in simple bamboo huts. The center of the house not only serves as the kitchen where food is cooked over a wood fire but it is also a gathering place to discuss matters. A usual day in Ziro village can begin as early as 5:00 a.m. When all the adults, after finishing their morning chores, leave for their farm- lands, and children head to school, the entire village seems to come to a halt in the late morning hours till late evening, with just a few women engaged in weaving traditional clothes, if not going to the fields. As a result, all the activities are planned for around 4-5 p.m. which is time for everyone to be back to their homes.
The area is famous for having pine forested hills, mountain rice cultivation and the most captivating members are the older women of the tribe, with their facial tattoos and massive blocks of cane in their noses. Though non-existent now, the Apatani women were considered the most beautiful in all of Arunachal Pradesh. Men of other tribes would often steal Apatani women, which led the Apatani men to tattoo the faces of their women and make them wear massive nose plugs, in order to make them less appealing.
The tribe is known for their colourful culture with various festivals, intricate handloom designs, skills in cane and bamboo crafts.
