Former dealer here. Table stakes means table stakes and the rules of the game apply to every player during every hand. And if an all-in is declared, that means ~ALL~ of that player's chips are at risk...including all the money that went south in this case, even if it's "just five bucks." Floor person should have been called to clarify and enforce the rule. Love your videos and glad you're back to regular posting! Cheers!
Good point on calling the floor person over. He or she would have likely restated the rule for the entire table to hear, and there probably wouldn't have been as much table talk afterward by the other players. It's surprising to me that anyone would try to defend it. Nobody cares about $5 one way or the other, but we do care about the integrity of the game, and that's only maintained when everyone respects the rules.
Ok dealer, he tips the whites to you then shoves, what do you do then, return them into the pot? I have seen this move 10 times through the years and never has the dealer said no. Once a guy did it for 20 of a 50 shove. I told the dealer later it wasn't right but it is what it is.

But if there is any question or ambiguity as to the intent of a player's actions, a floor person should be called to determine the correct ruling. That's not the dealer's place. Cheers!

It's an All In situation, in the middle of the hand. Big difference between tipping a waitress between hands, and an all in during the hand. All in means All of it, not 5 bucks less. What if PokerBeast had the flush? Wouldn't he want all of the money? Unless he previously declared the money doesn't play, then all of it is on the table in a table stakes game.

@@keithkelso9872 I suppose it depends on each casino's rules. Based on some comments here, some casinos don't count the $1 chips. I personally have never seen that; in my experience every chip on the table is in play...
100% on the dealer who never should’ve put you in that position to decide if you wanted to make an issue of it or not. What makes it more galling is that it happened directly in front of the dealer. No way the dealer could’ve missed that happening. And even if it was only like $5 it certainly makes a difference in the long run when you factor in the rake at the lower limit games.
If the dealer seen buddy take the $5 off the table and didn't say anything, then the dealer is the problem. And you are 100% RIGHT in asking where the whites went. If he wanted a few bucks he could ask the table before hand. We are allowed to pay for drinks out of our stacks up here in Canada and take money out for meals when we take a 1 hour dinner break. In most 2-5 games the white chips don’t play in all in situations unless it’s exactly $5. If the opponent thought it was less than 5 it makes sense to pull them. Example with Odd number like $9 - $5 goes in, the other $4 doesn’t play. Still shouldn’t pull em, but it’s not that unusual.
This this this this this. Finally. It took me reading a million comments to find this one. Very normal to see players throw change to a dealer when going all in at a 2/5 game. If they had $152, then they go all-in for $150 and throw the $2 to the dealer. The fact that this one happens to be a full $5, means that it should absolutely stay in play. However, the people in these comments and even the video poster are making this into a much bigger deal than it was. “Rules are rules” blah blah blah. Remind me never to play with any of you. You all sound super fun.

I had a lady add $100 during a hand before. She had already looked at her cards but you could tell she wasn't doing it to get value from a monster. I had AQ and ended up taking the money she added.

I'm kind of middle of the road when it comes to the situation with the guy taking money off the table. As it pertains to the rules of the game, you're absolutely correct that you can't "go south" at any point while at the table. This is why in so many rooms if someone racks up and leaves a table, they make the player wait a certain amount of time (generally something in the 1hr range) before the player can come back and start fresh at another table. Obviously this is so people can't use table changes or racking up to be able to take money off the table. Now on the other hand, taking $5 off the table is much different than taking $100 or something substantial off the table. Every room has different rules for this, but the few casinos around me allow players to take money off their stack at any time, whether it be for food, drinks, tips, or whatever. One room I play in allows you to take $15 off your stack, a couple others let you take $20 off. I guess there's still a difference between taking the money off with live cards and without live cards though. So this is why I can understand why the rest of the table didn't like you calling him out. Like I said, you're well within your right to do so, but for such a trivial amount I probably would have leaned towards calling him out in a joking manner so he realizes what he did isn't right, but I ultimately wouldn't have pressed the issue for $5.
I always pull my tip / food chips off the table before a hand if I intend to pay from my stack and to avoid this. When shoe has been on other foot I’ve allowed players to take the tip money out of the all in when they ask. It’s always been a nominal amount and only a rec player would want to do this, so I oblige them
Bingo. And that's the key point a lot of people are missing. Pros don't do this. Only a rec would. Why piss off the recs and avoid them giving you action? Letting the few dollars slide could net you more in the future. I'm a long term kinda guy. That's how poker players are supposed to be.
Congrats on 100! All are so well done! I think I let the $5 go, very much against the rules. I’d report the dealer as the dealer is the problem, you shouldn’t have to regulate at the table. Also, that’s a super helpful tell, it gave you $, so I’d keep it to myself for the edge in play. Id probably give you $ for a cash game as you are rocking low stakes, not sure about the main event. I love seeing all the folds too, it helps give me context. You’re my favorite poker streamer!
I understand your point completely. In that situation, I would’ve used the information as a sign of weakness and quickly made the call, without making him add them back. Great vlog! Casinos obviously allow you to take some money off the table for tips and to pay for food, beverages, massages, etc. Mid-hand, it is an absolute no-no. At many casinos, anything less than $5 does not count towards an all-in bet in a 2/5 game (not sure what the rules are at Jamul). Usually, if the all-in player is going home if he loses, the all-in player pre-tips the dealer the left over amounts. It looks like your opponent may have thought that he had less than the $5 amount when he picked up the remaining amount. Still, he should have confirmed that the amount was not in play, and, if he wanted a good run-out, should have tipped the remainder to the dealer. It is like the high stakes $100-$200 no-limit games where players have $50K to $500K. Frequently, the lowest chip denomination in play is $100 chips. You can sometimes see a stack of $5 chips for tipping. If a person goes all in, usually the $5 chips are not considered in play, even if they total over $100 (despite being “table stakes”). If he’s a pro, he seems like scummy POS. I would definitely call that sneaky shit out. If he’s a recreational player, it’s probably an honest mistake, and I would not say anything (especially if he is a regular donator to the cause). I can’t tell if the comments on the table were from regs or not, but it seemed like they may have been regs that would let it go for the sake of not making recreational play feel embarrassed. Remember, the recs are there for fun. In short, no hoodie, backpack, and headphones, I probably don’t say anything.

The dealer definitely should have called him out for removing chips from the table during a hand. It's just something you don't do. I understand he may have wanted to tip someone, but he should have asked if it was okay first and then no one would have had an issue. Easy. He knew it wasn't the right thing to do and I'm sorry the table gave you a hard time about it : ( Happy 100! : )

Yeah, I would have let it go. The act was a great tell that he wasn't holding the nuts, and at just $5 it's not worth the drama. In the end, he did have a good reason wanting to tip someone. He should have just asked if you minded, and you would have said no, go ahead. Lesson learned, and you were in the right, but it's one of those things you think about afterward, and say to yourself, nah, I'll probably leave it alone next time. 👍✌

White 1 dollar chips usually dont play in an all in and It is very common to let a person that is all in keep a blind for gas or a tip, If you google letting a player keep a chip or 1$ chips don't play in an all in in terms to poker etiquette and you will see its very common and the person didn't do anything that isn't a normal in most cash games.

Sorry to say. Watched the video because of title . Anticipating a player going south with a big amount. Ended up only being $5 only. It was pretty petty arguing that. And once he explained himself saying he was gonna tip the waitress. I would of just stayed quiet if I was in your shoes. It's was nothing malice . i did that one time when i was new to live cash. won a few pots and wanted to put profits in my pocket and as i started taking them off the whole table plus dealer started looking at me crazy. learned that day. you did nothing wrong.

You definitely are correct in asking him about taking chips off the table. He could have had a single large denomination chip within the white chips that you might not have seen. The fact that he did it so fast proves that he knew he shouldn’t be doing it and hoping nobody saw it. Sure,it was 5$ but it’s your 5$ potentially.

You should've probably just let the $5 go. A few one dollar chips in a 2/5? Sometimes someone just wants a few dollars to buy a soda on their way out. Or maybe he thought it was $4... In most 2/5 games, $1 chips that add up to less than $5 don't play. That said, he shouldn't have taken them off the table, you're correct. And if they were for the dealer, he could've EASILY tossed them to the dealer before you acted.

If he had 4 whites, he could take them with him after showdown. Some poker rooms make you put extra chips ONLY when all in, instead of multiples of $5 chips. **************

I think you were right to call it out. If he wasn't going all in, you maybe should over look it, but not on an all in bet. I do think it was a tell that he wasn't too strong. A situation like that has the potential to put you off balance and lose concentration, so you do need to consider that. Sometimes it's not worth it.

Taking chips off the table during a hand is angle shooting. Same as adding chips during a hand is angle shooting. You can add chips up to the casino limit between hands, but you cannot take any off your stack in your stay at the table at any time.
The casino makes the rules, and I'm positive no one is allowed to remove chips from the table especially if your activity in a pot with another player.

She got dealt in, she said I am all in for this which was about $50 bucks, the dealer said ma'am it is tables stakes and you said "all in" you have to put "all of your chips in". She had a look of shock on her face when she realized her mistake. Some dude woke up with AA and took all over her $$$$.
You are right about the rule…he’s not allowed to take the 5 dollars off the table. If the guy is not a winning player though, I’m gonna think it’s for a tip or a few bucks for food and not say anything. The reality is that the only thing that keeps live poker special is the losing players, so I would never had said anything about it. You obviously have a right to say something, but if losing players feel like the rule police are going to enforce everything over a few bucks, they aren’t going to play as much, and the overall difficulty of the games gets harder.
Hey idk how it works in that casino or in the higher stakes games where ur at but most times on the bigger tables the white chips don't play...u can only bet in incriminates of 5 and the rest r just tip chips...u will get used to it the more u move up levels

As much as i like you Cato and your great volumes of vlogs as always, i don't understand this: at 2:52 you say i am not used to playing these stakes (so the 2/5 cash) and a bit earlier you say that you are going to play this years main event (where you will sell about 30% of your action if i heard that right). That's a bit strange to me, if playing 2/5 is not feeling great because of your lack of experience with them, then why playing a 10k tourney? (unless you sattied in for cheap of course) Of course i understand that the main event maybe is a dream to you - and to almost all of us pokerplayers- but the main event will be there for many many years to come and maybe when you increase your bankroll more and get more experienced and confident by moving up in stakes that you will feel more ready for it. I've lost all my chips many times and nothing left in my pocket, I've seen ppl give other a green chips or red chips when they busted and get up ready to leave , they'd say "gas money" something like that and give it others, I myself did got one green chips a from a player, it was friendly table, whole table we had a lot of conversation on the table, others told me to take the chip and I did take the chips, it warmed my heart tbh, not feeling that worse after losing all, anyway if it not too much, I think it is okay to let the guy keep it, altho in this vid I dont think he was going to tip the dealer, ppl tip remaining white chips to the dealer after all in, but in this case he didn't , maybe he was saving it for gas, who know , but rules are rules, you didn't do anything wrong, but you could've let the guy keep it , it would've been an act of generosity
You're right to call out on the chips taken from the table. You should have gotten into another hand with him, and take a few greens off the table. Tell him you were gonna tip the valet. See what he does.

In the chip removal off the table situation. You should have got the floor involved. You were not wrong and you should have got a ruling. I believe in that instance he may have had to forfeit his hand.
You were absolutely justified in calling the player out for taking chips off the table. The dealer should have done his job and requested he put the chips back on the table. Personally, since it was such a small amount, I would have said something after the hand was over. I do believe what he said, I don’t think it was a purposely shady move.
I was in a big hand against a kid at Wynn, he had just won a big hand like 20 minutes earlier where he had been paid on the river like $600 in black chips. He bets into me on the river and I ask where are your black chips? He turns red and starts mumbling bs. He had went south. He was so embarrassed he immediately left.
