It looks great! I have the Nikon 14-30 f/4S but a prime would be nice and not destroy the bank. Viltrox is making a whole lot of Nikon Z mount lenses which is great to see 3rd party manufacturers finally getting fully on board. Thanks for sharing Richard.

What is more relevant is that numerous reviewers were too keen to praise than question , query etc any brand more notably Canon . When they all brown nosed Canon praising the R7 i . Whilst neglecting the blatent obvious .. Array of affordable lenses . There was / is next to zero . And Canon clamping down on Brands making gear ..certainly never helped .

This is great. For people like me who are amateurs and shoot the occasional astro photograph every now and then it is a good choice. It’s not overly expensive and since now viltrox offers autofocus that works its an added bonus for people with failing eyesight. 😃 Personally I know how to focus in the dark but if I don’t have my glasses I’d hate to go back home and discover that I’ve missed focus!

AHHHHHHHHHHHHH!! Ever since I got into Z land I've been wanting Sigma, Tamron or Viltrox or somebody to make a 16mm prime lens (FF) with a fast aperture, 1.4 or 1.8, that could double as my landscape and astro lens. And 77mm thread to match my 24-120 and 100-400???? This is a great day.

The Laowa is ok but its purple fringing is a little too much for me. Yet to this it for astro yet though...Will do so soon. Hi Richard, what a great review! Some time ago, I dropped my Nikon 20mm Z 1.8 on the floor and had to send it to Nikon to replace the lens. They didn't do a very good job, and the stars in one corner look horrible... Would it be worth selling it and buying this Viltrox? Can they be compared in terms of quality?
@nightscapeimages.richard
@nightscapeimages.richard 2 месяца назад
The Viltrox is very good and close to the 20mm f1.8 in quality for sure. I think the Nikon Z20 is fantastic though .. but of course if it's de-centred then the Viltrox will be better. I used the Viltrox for nearly all my nightscapes on a recent trip. I haven't noticed the difference in focal length as much as I thought I would.

I also own the lens for my Sony A7c and I have experienced shooting the Milky Way, so my question is regarding the presetting of the 2 positions as foreground and as bright stars (infinity) Do you achieve pin-sharp and round stars presets which can be used each time reliably without having to reset on every Milky Way shooting?

Hello, can you tell me which lens you think is better - Nikon 17-28 f/2.8 vs Viltrox 16mm. If you compare 16 and 17mm. I have a 17-28 and I'm thinking about buying a Viltrox. I see the Viltrox has a big vignette, so when stopped they end up similar?
@nightscapeimages.richard
@nightscapeimages.richard 3 месяца назад
I did try the Nikon 17-28 f2.8 and liked it a lot. But I would always go for the lens with the widest aperture for shooting nightscape photography. In that case the Viltrox 16mm f1.8. If you want an all purpose lens for daytime shooting as well . .then the17-28 may well be the better option.
@vitalisvasylius7390
@vitalisvasylius7390 3 месяца назад
@@nightscapeimages.richard Hello, I bought Viltrox but I am already returning it. When using f1.8-2.8 the edges are very bad (not even the edges, but 30% from the edge). The Nikon Z 17-28 is significantly better. Maybe I came across such a specimen, but I think that this lens is not designed for the Z system, but an FZT adapter is added to the DSLR lens scheme. It's not the same. If you have the opportunity, do a test on the day Nikon Z 14-24mm VS Viltrox at f/2.8. If the Viltrox edges are significantly worse then my version is correct, if the edges are similar then I had a bad copy and you have a great lens.

I have truly enjoyed this and other videos you make about nightscape images. You have peaked my interest in learning how to make them myself. My photography background is in high school and some collegiate sports where my idea of a perfect lens is a Nikon 400mm 2.8. I have a good number of zooms but no wide angle primes except the Nikon 40mm 2.0 I got with the Zf kit. I am going to purchase the Viltrox 16mm. I own Nikon as well and have the Z9 which is amazing fast for sports. What advice would you give someone like me who would like to test the waters so to speak? I am subscribed to your channel and see some amazing images. I live on east coast of Florida in a small town, not too much light contamination. Just 60 miles south of Cape Canaveral. To the west of me 10 miles or so is nothing but ponds and marsh and cattle ranching. and gators!!. thanks , Ted in Sebastian, Fl.

Thanks so much for your kind words Ted. It sounds like you have good experience with photography and good equipment. Nightscape shooting is simply an extension of daytime landscapes .. but you have to deal with having to limit your shutter speed as the stars are moving. Work on composition . .it's still the most important element. . followed by post processing. I have many videos covering these subjects here on the channel.

I've already thought about buying the Sony 14mm f/1.8 but it costs a lot and you still have to use an adapter that costs almost half the price of the Vitrox 16mm lens. The Megadap FE-Z adapter costs €303.00 here at Europra. It's a shame Vitrox doesn't have this lens for Nikon Z because you'll have to use an adapter to use it on Nikon Z cameras. Vitrox 16mm E-mount €599.00 + customs taxes +Megadap FE-Z €303.00 is a bit of a strange budget, but it's still a good option as Richard says for Nikon shooters. I wonder which lense to buy viltrox 16 or z20 for landscape milkyway or panoramic milkyway(arch). I think it's problem to have strong vignetting when it comes to panorama. Viltrox may be troublesome… I should stopping down to f2.8. As for z20 1.8, it cross my mind sigma 20 1.4 dg dn(there is some report to have trouble with using adaptor, though). And, z20 1.8 has also little come and strong vignetting(when stopping down, it will well immediately than viltrox?) This is a tough one. Sorry for my bad english.

The Z20mm f1.8 is a better lens and what I would choose. All of these lenses have some vignetting wide open and that is often why I stop down the aperture a bit as well. The Sigma DGDN lenses are wonderful but I've not tried them on Nikon via adaptor.

Thanks for all that info on the Viltrox for Milky Way use, Richard. A couple of questions if you have time: Did the lens come with a manufacturer's lens profile? If one was supplied, is the process of loading 3rd party profiles in Lightroom/ACR very difficult? I don't know enough about the cosmos to know, but that 1 star out of round, is it possible that was a distant nebula or galaxy with gas clouds showing around it? (Or is my ignorance showing? 😊)

Love my Viltrox 16mm although I use the Sony mount and the Neewer adapter on my Z6. The digital display is very handy when using an Ha clip in filter because of focus shift fond that 1.5 meters give me infinity, so yes very handy and accurate too. Only fault I have is that the focus motors wouldn’t work at -20 C 😅 maybe a lens warmer might help. Excellent review ❤

I have the 16mm and 35mm AF and the 20mm MF lenses for Sony and enjoy them all, though I've yet to get out to do astro. Viltrox seems to make decent quality lenses at very good prices, which makes me tempted to get more of the range to get more flexibility... I'm eyeing the 24mm or 28mm to fill the gap.

Thank you for the review Richard. I got a copy of that lens for sony E mount. Unfortunately my copy shows a lot more astigmatism than yours. I had to replace the first copy I received, because it was decentred. The second copy seems to perform better, but when I got the chance to test it a few weeks later I noticed fighter jet stars in a large section of the frame, not just the extreme corners. I think if I were to buy a wide angle lens again I'd get a second hand Sony 14mm GM for twice the price of the Viltrox.
