Thanks for the great review and actually taking great sample photos! I get so tired of people sharing reviews and opinions paired with photos that are so boring and/or bad.
I think this lens has great value, especially given that it's about half (or less than half) the price of the Fuji 1.2 version. And honestly, most people won't notice the difference in bokeh probably between 1.2 and 1.4 anyway. But for the money, even if it delivered 90% of what the Fuji version does, I'd say that's pretty good. I'm tempted to get one of these for my XT20 so I can have a small portable portrait setup (versus carrying around my Nikons all the time).
Exactly my point. It is a great value for money. I do actually own several Viltrox lenses and I love them all. Not perfect but not pretending to be and for the price they are great choice.

Brand new to photography. Picked up an xt4 2 weeks ago with the 18-55 kit lense. I bought this lense for portraits 4 days after i bought the camera. I got it (like new condition) for $205 US and it hasnt come off my camera since I put it on. I really want to get the 75mm 1.2 at some point.
Beautiful pictures and nice review! I bought this lens myself after being very happy with the 85/1.8 and like this one very much as well :) It definitely has more chromatic aberration than my Zeiss lenses and Fujinon lenses, and also more than the Viltrox 85/1.8 - but I still love it and I haven´t really had a problem removing it with the manual option in Lightroom :)
I’m loving these viltrox lenses! Great review friend 👊🏻 i usually don’t pay attention to chromatic aberrations either. There was a show I watched for a while where there was CA EVERYWHERE. I think it can be distracting but not a deal breaker.

Probably one of the best reviews I’ve seen of this lens which I have by the way. As you say for you the character of the bokeh is very clinical which I have found also. Making me wonder if I should have gone with Fuji instead? After all this is a portrait lens primarily and we all want creamy bokeh. Ok it matches the Fuji and surpasses it in auto focus etc, but does it match it for the reason most portrait photographers would want it?
it's only worse than Fuji when you compare images from this lens and the fuji lens side by side. In the real world situations and for untrained eye, Viltrox can deliver professional results for sure
Agreed! Sorry the point I was also trying to make was, and as you mentioned, that if you buy a 1.4/ 1.2 lens you also want it to be sharp at that aperture and mine isn’t 😟 perhaps I was expecting too much 😉
@@stevespencer9001 this wide open, you also have to take into the consideration how you focus and what your subject is. I'm not saying that it is impossible to get sharp pictures wide open at f1.4/f1.2 but it is certainly a little bit harder
Photographers should use the Fuji cameras as still photographic devices and not as a video camera although many want the XT series cameras to be a Swiss Army knife of the camera world. If you want video, then get a video camera. They are designed to circumvent the problems mentioned in this video. The video cameras often have superior video and their own built in lens. End of problem. BTW...excellent video...I have all the Viltrox lenses and they all are really good for still photography and excellent for the price.
All Fuji cameras are hybrid cameras. That's what most of people want. Everything in one. I personally shoot photography and video and I want to use the same camera or cameras for both and with the same lenses. In my opinion, I'd be wasting my money if I got dedicated video camera with a fixed lens. Thanks for watching!
After years with Nikon and canon I finally sold out and switched to only. Had years of success and enjoyment especially video with ibis, flip screen and smallness since years now. Always been fascinated by Fuji - never by sony- and finally because if the x-s10 made the initial move with an all roubd16-80 f4 zoom to start with. Do not want to buy too many lenses and may sell all my only stuff eventually soon if Fuji works out. Trying hard to think what one or max two lenses might be the best complement. Hence thinking about the three viltrox. But my shortlist at present are - thinking portrait, video, great bokeh and close ups like flowers, food etc but also indoors real estate. My current thinking is either or 16mm f4; 16mm f 2.8, or another zoom like the 10-24 f4 tomcover it all. Any thoughts or recommendations? Bear in mind smaller size, versatility for me is essential given I do a lot of filming also on the iPhone pro max in a small rig set up.
VIltrox is a great choice - they make lenses that are great value for money, certainly way cheaper than Fuji (or Sony and Nikon) lenses and they are all small and light. I own personally 3 Viltrox lenses that I use professionally and I can't really complain about them (much). They are not perfect but they don't pretend to be. You just learn their shortcomings and enjoy the quality they deliver.
hey my friend. thanks for the review. CAn i have your advice? i bought a xs20 and a sigma 18-50 2.8. Now i want to take only one prime, because of budget. I do a lot of portraits. I work of fashion industry as a model and want to shoot models as well. I was thinking about getting 33 1.4 (50) or a 56 1.4 (75). The 56 is to tight for some situations. Do you think i can achieve nice portraits with the 33 (50) as well?
I just got my xf viltrox lens today! Quite satisfied with the results! Only cons I found is I feel the aperture blades does not close evenly, at F8, the shape is not symmetrical, not sure if this is common among all lens or viltrox lenses. The build quality really surprise me it looks better than it is in the videos in real life! Do you have any videos about the viltrox 23mm f1.4? Thinking to get one after my good experience with 56 f1.4 from viltrox
I can't say that I have noticed bokeh being not symmetrical with any Viltrox lens. Maybe there is a fault with the one you have. I didn't review 23mm f1.4. I have reviewed 24mm f1.8 on Sony though
@@PavSZ I contacted the customer service they say currently they can’t make a perfect circle for the aperture blade and it’s normal for my case so I am fine with it ~

Great review. Oddly, I’m debating between this lens and the Lensbaby Velvet 56. I think you just pushed me to the Lensbaby. Lens character is very important to me. 😏
The Lensbaby's in my opinion are more specialty lenses when you special effects, and the Viltrox are more just general purpose third party alternatives to what the mfrs offer.
I’ve just ordered the 85mm and it’s got me wondering, Fuji could kill these lenses with one line of code in a firmware update. I don’t think they would, as Fuji don’t seem like a company that’d do that. On the plus side, if they did, it’d have to be a really big update to get people to do it rather than keeping these lenses.
@@PavSZ What do you consider older camera's? I'll be using a X H1. I had problems with a sigma lens on Nikon after a firmware update so I know it happens.
Viltrox would simply release a firmware update so you update it from your computer. Since the new Tokina lenses are allegedly from the same OEM I doubt there are going to be major issues.
I had some purple fringing as well but prominently. It depends on the shot, sometimes it is juts impossible without to remove it without making an image look wrong. I use Lightroom - there is a colour picker for fringing and sliders to remove it with.
I can't see why not. I have used 50mm lenses throughout my career for food photography - 99% of time at f4 to get enough sharpness on the plate. This lens certainly performs better at f4 than wide open.
This lens and i guess all viltrox lenses have problem wth motor.. it just cant nail perfect focus..thats why sometimes pictures looks like not 100% focused
@@PavSZ Faster aperture ,sharper at all relevant f stops up to the corner,less CA's and LoCa superior color rendition, boekeh and focus fall off. As I sad you get what you pay, faster AF on Viltrox,but I never saw someone is jumping around when taking portrait.
