Some sound clips and a description of the new 'Pony' short-scale bass by Vincent Guitars. What a fun instrument, built by a true master builder; Johannes Pöhlmann. Like a Mustang on steroids! Recorded through my Eich T1000 with some vibes distortion by Plug In Alliance (SVT Classic).

Great idea. Insane price.

@@jazzman1954 but if you’re in the UK it’s still cheaper than going to the USA to sample the wares of the boutique bass guitar builders . 🤷‍♀️

@@007KayElleKay I do live in the UK. A bog standard Fender short scale will do the same job. I went through the ‘exotic custom’ thing. Then I used my ears and common sense. Remember, the best recordings in history were made with work-a-day instruments using basic materials.

@@jazzman1954 - I’ve got my 51 year old Musicmaster which I have had from new and love dearly - sure, it can “ do the job” but not when you’ve got serious arthritis in just about every joint in your body ? So the Fender is retired due to its weight issues rather than how it sounds . When you’re faced with either giving up or spending over two grand on a very nice , very playable bespoke bass which is almost half the weight , then you’ll finally understand why a Vincent is an absolute steal . 😉

@@jazzman1954 - price is secondary to getting exactly what you want and what you need from an instrument .It’s only insane if you can’t afford it and/or don’t need it .

Great video ! How does it compare to your vintage mustang? The Pony seem to have a larger low-end... almost an in-between a Mustang and a P-bass.

It sounds very different to my Mustang, that’s why I did not compare them in the video. The Pony is more open with a totally different mid timbre. Great bass!

I have a vintage Mustang and also a Musicmaster , the Pony is lighter, doesn’t neck dive and the maple neck is much faster .

@@007KayElleKay Out of curiosity, Does the vintage mustang have neck dive? I see folks complain about it for JMJ which is a "vintage inspired" version. I've always been curious about the real thing and if it has neck dive.

Well worth it for a handmade individually specced instrument - Fenders are churned out .

Very nice bass but ultimately that price is about 2000 euros more than it should be, it's very hard to justify nearly 3k for a passive Mustang copy, no matter how nicely it's built, or how many colour options are available..

Ok. Show me where you find a handbuilt instrument with handwound pickups etc. for 1K.

@@mariusgoldhammer Woodcraft in LA are making really nice Musicmaster basses with hand-wound pickups for less than half the price of this bass, not sure what else is hand built and what isn't but they're super nice and high spec basses with big improvements on the original design. I paid around half this price for a totally hand-built Wilcock in the UK not too long ago (although his prices have gone up this year). You can get high spec / high end for less. Depends on how important the specific luthier is to you - for me there's a limit for a bass that's utilitarian and designed for simplicity, regardless of who builds it. Same thing applies to the Olinto Mustang, beautiful but not at that price. Just my opinion.

I’ve got both a Pony and a Mustang . The Pony has a faster maple neck and it’s about half the weight of the Mustang . With a broken shoulder that’ll never heal , I can tell you that the Pony is incredibly light and much easier to play than the Fender which neck dives . It was about £2200 which was well worth the 15 week wait because it’s custom made . Yes, it is certainly but in looks only , similar to a Mustang but it’s much, much nicer to play - I like the pickups but it’s not as bright as my Mustang . If you don’t have both to compare side by side , you may think it’s an overpriced Fender copy - it’s not , it’s a brilliant little bass that’s responsive even on the E string which tends to be flabby in most short scales . It’s all very well being critical but most people on here don’t have both basses side by side as I do . The Fender is iconic but the Vincent is much easier to play ! It’s worth every penny just to not carry that weight .

@@qbass00- my Fender Musicmaster is still far heavier than my Vincent Pony and weight really matters to older players .

@@007KayElleKay I wasn't questioning the quality of these basses, I know Vincent basses are brilliant. The price seems a little excessive for what it is, regardless of how it's built. The comparison with an old Fender Musicmaster isn't really fair, it's a 50 year old bass and these are brand new instruments. There are other semi-boutique builders (Sandberg, Atelier Z and the others I mentioned above) who currently make really nice and light short scales that feel like custom instruments for between £1K - £2K, sometimes with active electronics and various pickup options too, at the higher end of that bracket. This is a passive, no-frills bass with a simple configuration, so to me it seems quite overpriced. But that's just my opinion, like I said, I'm sure it's a great bass - hope you enjoy it.
