ABC's Fred Silverman, who was responsible for scheduling this brief series in the first place {he wanted another "DONNY & MARIE"; the Krofft brothers also produced their show}, also insisted that Garry Marshall come up with a "stunt" episode he could promote at the beginning of the 1977-'78 season- hence, "Fonzie jumps a shark in Hollywood". To the end of his life, Garry regretted filming that episode (and Henry Winkler still does).
Back at a time of innocence when this was entertaining - I dreamed about being a Brady and that house!! Glad to have grown up in this era!! This pulled me back to my youth, simplicity.
@@fromthesidelines Of everybody on that show only her and Florence Henderson had the capabilities to actually do well on those song and dance routines. Florence Henderson could have definitely have had her own variety show, but the timing probably was not right, as she was busy with the Brady Bunch during the time frame that she most likely would have been offered one.
Same old tired stupid and not true commend you see on EVERY VIDEO OF EVERY SHOW FROM THE 1950s until 2005. It’s silly inane pointless and NOT TRUE. Most tv Bach then and for all time IS stupid valid vacuous ugly and pointless. 🙄🤡🤮
The Kroffts were also involved in "PINK LADY {& JEFF}". Fred Silverman, as president of NBC in 1980, was determined to create another variety show along the lines of "DONNY & MARIE" and "TONY ORLANDO & DAWN" [never mind that Mie and Kei could barely speak a word of English]. One of his executives tried to tell him, "The variety show is dead." Silverman roared, "I'll tell you *exactly* how long the variety show is dead for!!!" "How long?", the executive said softly. "It's dead until the next hit variety show is on the air!!!", Fred insisted. Except for "BARBARA MANDRELL & THE MANDRELL SISTERS" (also a Krofft production), Silverman- in his three years with NBC- could never keep a variety show alive for more than a few episodes.
@@fromthesidelines Silverman almost bankrupted NBC with Supertrain. The costs for it were high and the ratings dismal. Supposedly he went to visit the set one time and got so mad that he kicked the scale model of the train. Not realizing that it was a harder material than he thought it was and broke his foot. I remember Johnny Carson used to make fun of Supertrain in his monologue. That must have drove Silverman up the wall, but he couldn't do anything about it because at that point in time, The Tonight Show was about the only thing on NBC that was making money and Johnny was also thinking about going to ABC himself. It's amazing how someone who created such success at both CBS and ABC almost singlehandedly destroyed. NBC.
I keep thinking of That 70s show 'who gave these idiots a whole hour?!?' 😂 Its so bad but I love The Brady Bunch so cant look away. And whoa, Greg's hot! And Cindy's hair is the bomb.
There were other Brady shows after this. Like the Brady Brides and the 90's show called the Bradys. In those shows, the characters NEVER refer to the time they ran their own variety show. It's like EVERYONE wanted to forget about this show's existence!
Well of course, what pubescent young man didn't have pin ups of Ann B. Davis and Francis Bavier( Aunt Bea from Andy Griffith) lacquered on their walls and ceilings?
Poor Ann B. Davis got lower billing that H.R. Pufnstuf. If it wasn’t for my parents I wouldn’t even know that was but I tuned into The Brady Bunch on Nick at Nite in the 90s every night, so I knew who Alice was.
@@Mister_Listener In the 7 months since I made this comment I have exchanged emails with a lady from Long Beach who was actually in this show as a dancer, she is 73 this year (2024) the show was broadcast 47 years ago making her 26 years old at the time... as they say TIME WAITS FOR NO ONE...🤪
The coke was flowing sooo freely during these 70s writer meetings. Also, Robert Reed thought the Brady Bunch scripts were corny, yet agreed to be a part of THIS!!??? He must have really needed the money!!!
Another copy of The Brady Bunch Variety Hour has been deleted from the RU-vid app. Why? RU-vid will never say why they deleted the other copies of this episode which featured my favorite horror film actor, Vincent Price, as one of the guest stars. Please tell me why by responding to my comment here.
I wonder if Professor Whitehead ever replaced Oliver with a new object of his affection ? I'm referring to the huge cave tiki, not the towheaded, bespectacled little cousin.
I get the whole "tacky/horrible/can't look away from it" aspect of this show, and I think in part it's a seventies thing. May I respectfully point out one very compelling reason to watch? Maureen McCormick. Enough said.
Yes, it was a low point for 70s television, but there was an older audience for this kind of slop, which is why there were so many variety shows around at the time. You had Lawrence Welk, Donny and Marie, Sonny and Cher, and quite a few more. All aimed at a target audience of at least 70 years old. Grandpa and grandma would watch one of these trainwrecks, and then go to sleep. It was the highlight of an otherwise uneventful day. On the bright side, at least Robert Reed had fun with his delusion that he deserved to be on Broadway.
Lawrence Welk was not a variety show. Variety shows were actually an evolution of vaudeville and were around since the beginning of TV. Not all were bad and Carol Burnett was the gold standard. However, toward the end of their run they were overused and it seemed that just about anybody who came on the scene with a hit record also got a variety show. If you compare this show to any other variety show of the era you will see it pretty much follows the same formula. In terms of song and dance, comedy, guest stars and solo numbers.. Just insert a different person or group to theme the show around.
My formative years were during the Brady era, however very seldom watched the variety hour. Always wondered where my weird nightmares originated.. Was trying to figure out why Jans character has very little storyline or close-up attention, then realized it is not Eve Plumb playing Jan, 🤔
really? everybody know why Eva plumb didnt want to do this show! Plumb has stated in interviews that she was willing to do the variety show's original special episode, but could not commit to a five-year option for additional shows
@@bramlintrent1145 well when the producers through this was going to be the next Sonny and cher Variety show and by the late 70s and early 80s Variety shows with Celebrity name were dying!
It's funny Robert Reed felt the "Brady Bunch" was beneath his serious stage acting background, but then he goes and agrees to this garbage. Anything for a paycheck I guess.
Worst idea ever, turn the Brady Bunch into a variety show 😂. I think Vincent Price was perfect for this because it's truly scary to try and Resurrect the Brady Bunch dancing and singing. Greg Brady singing all by myself, it's horrifying!!!
There couldn't have been much done to save this train wreck. I'd have asked Flo to do the variety show herself and invite Brady kids on as guest stars. You can even have Geri play her daughter on the new show, even do a Seinfeld thing, where she goes back to the Brady family as her "real life" family for some skits and has her "TV" family variety show with just Geri and maybe a couple other people that are more talented singers/dancers than the rest of the kids were. Marcia and Greg's singing was pretty dreadful, and you can sort of tell Maureen M. is really struggling around this time.
@@curtgottler9961 Actually the poster was right in that Florence and fake Jan were the only ones that could actually carry this kind of format. The others were horrible at this.
