Thank you for this video. I was a volunteer for two weeks in July 2010. It was one of the greatest adventures in my life and has left me with many treasured memories.

By far, more interesting and informative than even the BBC churn out. Not patronising, or token filled by pseudo Blue Peter presenters.. Excellent, more of the same please.

I last visited Vindolanda in 1992. The excavation site is huge compared to how it was when I went. Quite staggering. I love the cute paw print.

Mercury normally carried his attribute in his left hand. This is clearly seen on the carved stone tablet. It is a crude carving, but I think it’s likely to have been the caduceus or sacred wand given him by Apollo, normally carved as a rod with intertwined snakes. The snakes may have been beyond the ability of the sculptor.

Looking at 4thCentury Roman Britain. This is excellent. We studied a liitle of the reports of late Roman remains in the 1960s at Edinburgh University. Charles Thomas was the lecturer.

The carved figure with horse certainly appears to have a helmet with suggestion of wings. Mercury or Hermes in Greek. Messenger god, also god of travelers. The horse would seem to suggest travel or transport. Stone could have served as a quick identifier for an ostler’s yard. Travelers or visitors needing to hire a nag or stable one would understand instantly.

although most roman artifacts have no value it's still good to think about the history who made it and who owned it

In their previous video (April 2021), we’re told that most of the upper level stones were carted off by more recent residents, and used to build their own houses, walls, etc.

Interesting to know they had a Christian presence as evidenced by churches/basilicas even though to me it's also a sign of the end of polytheism and the religious diversity and tolerance that went with it, the loss of traditional culture, and a descent into backwardness and the beginning of religious and monarchical absolutism. 11:36 In my local museum in Rotherham there is also a roof or floor tile with a paw print.
